Got my first pair... now what?

I've read the stickys, but I figured I'll make a new thread so I can get a more definitive answer.

I just purchased my first pair which are the Naked and Famous Slim Girl Stretch Selvedge in Indigo.

I really have no idea how to start it. Should I pre-soak them before wearing them, or wear them for the 6 months then soak it?

I also want to know how the inseam will shrink and is it possible to get the inseam to any length? The inseam is 32" on these, and I need a 30" inseam. Will it shrink the 2" or do I have to do something for it to shrink that much?

Ahh! So much learn... Any help or advice would be appreciated.

TIA

N&F are sanforized, so they won't shrink 2". They should shrink under 5%. Personally, I would first do a warm soak to get the denim to shrink, then get them hemmed. It's good to get any shrinking out of the way with the first soak, so any hemming and fading won't be out of place after you do a wash. Lastly, wear the crap out of them.

Thanks! Yeah I was thinking of that too because I didn't want the honeycombing etc to be out of place

Should I wear them while they air dry or just hang dry them?

be careful with hemming because the jeans should shrink a bit (not sre how much for Sanforized) in the washing machine when you eventually wash them due to the motion. give them a warm soak and wear once they are almost dry. make sure to start a journal

I'll def start a journal!

This is so nervewrecking because I'm one of those people who will SOMEHOW screw it up... even if it's something as simple as just wearing them everyday ;) hahah!!

I'm excited to see a future journal from a fellow girl! I'll get a pair of dry denim eventually but in the meantime, I'm excited to see how your pair turns out

Let is soak inside out in the bathtub for... half an hour? An hour? I don't actually remember what I did. I guess I should know the answer before responding to a question.

Soak it for 45-60 mins. All the shrinking is out within a half hour or so I would say as long as it is hot water. Sanforized is no big deal since it will shrink maybe 2%. You shouldn't notice a huge difference.

Congratz on the purchase!

Here're a couple of rants I wrote regarding soaking and washing denim:

Soaking your raw denim Indigoshrimp's Blog
Washing your denim Indigoshrimp's Blog

Sanforised denim in general shrinks up to 3% in a machine wash if in a raw state.
This, however, depends on the exact method and degree of sanforisation ('compression') that the denim has undergone.
I know of some sanforised denim fabrics that shrinks up to 5%...not really a proper sanforisation then :P

Denim is hard to predict though, some fabrics have the majority of it's shrinkage taken care of after one hot soak, others need a few machine washes to completely shrink down...
Your best bet would be to wait until after a proper machine wash, and if it is still too long, get it hemmed.

^ thanks for that. very informative!!

i just read the inner tag and it says it should shrink 1% , i think if i hold off on washing them until a few months later, the shrink won't be that substantial that they creases etc are out of place... right?

1% would be OK without a soak, and the creasing won't change too much.
But I reckon a short soak will help bring out the character of the denim by tightening the twill weave of the fabric.

what does a short soak entail? or is it just the soaking instructions you've put on your blog?

btw, what kind of oil do you use to oil the leather... i don't actually know

Yeah, what I wrote should be applicable to all denim fabrics.
You can shorten the soak length slightly if you wish

For oiling leather, it depends on personal preference...
If you read through the leather section on my blog, you'll get some idea.
Generally I prefer simple, natural compounds - I generally use pure animal fat (horse oil, neatsfoot oil, etc) and a beeswax compound (pure, or mix with pure animal fat).
I apply the oil first, wait for it to dry, then 'seal' the grain of the leather with wax.
