Nudie / Dry Denim Newbie Help Thread!

I APOLOGIZE FOR THE HUGE POST, but I red-bolded my questions and summarized them at the end.

Hey there, everyone! As is blatantly obvious and previously stated in the title, Iím a newbie to dry denim, and I could sure use the help of all of you wonderful AFers!

So hereís the deal. I have very little experience with dry denim, and Iíve read through all the introductory threads which heed me to try them on in-store before making my first purchase. Iím partial to purchasing a pair of Nudies because I like the pockets, but I havenít been able to find any in my local area. Iíve checked Bloomies, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, NR, Off 5th, and Urban Outfitters. Does anyone have any other store suggestions, where I may be able to find Nudies without having to use eBay?

So, all I came up with are some Nudie Slim Jim Dry Black in Neiman which were all too big and Unbranded in UO in sizes 28 and 30. I tried on the 28 skinnies and they looked rather feminine on me (and I already wear slim/skinny jeans). I could barely button the first button, even after thrashing around for a couple minutes in the dressing room. Is this how they should initially fit, though, if I want to end up with a TTS skinny fit? (In other words, how many buttons should I be able fasten to never require a belt?)

If this helps, Iím a TTS 29 in R&R Henlee with a 30″ inseam. If I were to wear Nudie dry denim, I guess I would be a 28x32? In Conifuriousí introductory guide, I really loved the fit/wash result of the pictured Bootcut Olas, but I then found out that theyíd been discontinued long ago. So, my question is what other Nudie cuts would I probably want to look out for, given that I like fitted thighs and skinny/bootcut fits below the knee? How does the Bootcut Starcy compare? Feel free to name other brands, where I might buy them, and what my possible size would be, but Iíd rather not slap down several hundreds for Sammies, and Iíd probably not enjoy especially heavy denim, anyway. Lastly, (promise, last question for now) concerning Conifuriousí Bootcut Olas, what type of indigo produces that beautifully contrasted wash?

Muteís Questions Summarized:

1. In what other stores might I find dry denim, particularly Nudies?
2. For an in-the-end TTS/snug fit, how many buttons should I be able initially fasten?
3. I'm a 29x30 in R&R. What's my dry denim size?
4. What Nudie cuts are nice and fitted besides Bootcut Ola, and how does Bootcut Starcy compare? What's the difference between Slim Jim and Thin Finn, anyway?
5. What "type" of indigo (or whatever it is you call it which determines how the denim will fade) produces the same wash contrast as Bootcut Ola?

Oh, and... Broken Twill? Organic ecru embo?

THANK YOU for reading through my mess of a post.

hmm, I wouldn't call myself one of those professional raw denim wearers that know everything but i'll try to help where i can.

1. Ive never been to NJ but if you guys have a Holt Renfrew there, they sell nudies. if not, google "nudie jeans in new jersey" or whatever city you live in.

(wth is unbranded nudies? ive been to the urban outfitters many times in vancouver and they do not sell nudies)

3. the general rule i read around here is that you should get one size down so a 28? but you should probably try a pair on so you know for sure, make sure it's snug but not too crazy tight, it'll stretch out over time.

4. i dont know anything about bootcut. slim jim is a regular slim straight fit that fits normal at the waist and has a straight leg opening, thin finn is a tight fit that has a low yoke, sits normal at the waist and a narrow leg opening. in simple terms, slim jim is looser, thin finn is tighter. and also i heard grim tim is somewhere between the two

coincidentally i have both a pair of slim jim dry broken twill and I am wearing my thin finn organic dry ecru embo right at this very moment (which i just got yesterday) i guess the broken twill and organic are just different types of material the jean is made of, i don't really know in depth about them. the ecru embo just describes the back pocket stitching colour which is white (and damn sexy if you ask me)
for you, I think the thin finns would suit you well, theyre skinny but not TOO skinny, the pockets are lower than slim jims and most jeans. for thin finns though ive heard that the dry stretch fades quicker than the ODEE. hope that helped a little.

Oh, thanks! You're of great help, man, although I could use something more conclusive concerning sizing if I do decide to buy online, in which case, does anybody have suggestions for online purchasing besides eBay and the Nudie website?

I did a store search on the Nudie website and came up with a Barneys in my area (where I've never shopped before) and this random boutique, which I'll check out later. Does anyone know about the men's dry Nudie selection at Barneys, though? Their site has them, but they look like they are washed, for the most part.

The Unbranded Brand, by the way, is an entirely different dry denim brand sold at UO, and it happens to be the only dry denim I've ever tried on.

More replies to my original questions are appreciated.

Find your actual waist size by measuring a pair of your favourite jeans. Tag sized is pretty useless if you want to buy a pair online, all brands size a bit differently. The same is true for dry denim so look at the given waist measurements from the sites. You could make a trip up to self edge in New York. This is their specialty. Usually 1 down will take into account stretching+shrinking to give you a snug fit in th end. Some brands stretch excessively though like APC and DIOR. DIOR is vanity sized really badly though. There is natural and synthetic indigo. Synthetic fades and natural holds on. The fading comes from wear, dying and other characteristics of the denim.

I realize that, which is why I mentioned I'm a TTS 29 in Rock & Republic's Henlee cut. In other words (according to my measurements), my average denim waist is ~14.75'' with dip and ~15.25'' aligned. Where does that put me in Nudie?

On selfedge's website, it says for Nudie size 28 that the waist is 29''. Is that 14.5'' with dip or 14.5'' aligned? This is what's making it difficult for me to purchase online.

Nudie stretch factor? I'd like to avoid a crotch blowout, if possible.

crotch blowouts are inevitable - they happen through lots of wearing, the fabric thins out - easy to repair though

generally with Nudies and most raw denim, you size down ONE from your regular jean size..

for example I used to wear Levis size 32 - I bought two pairs of Nudies at 31.. quite tight at first but they loosen up with time and then once you wash they will tighten up.

any other questions?

ps: cultizm is the way to go - cheapest cost i've seen and they deliver in like 3 days.. from Germany to NA.. insanely fast.. plus good Customer service

Alrighty, thanks again, guys! I guess I'll just have to be cautious with the crotch fabric. Again, more input (questions in first post) is always appreciated.

My problem now, though, is that I'm a size 29 in R&R, but a size 28 in 7FAM and a loose 28 in TR. So, should I be sizing down one from a 29 to a 28, or from a 28 to a 27? Now you might understand my predicament, haha. Again, my jeans are ~14.75'' at the waist with dip and ~15.25'' aligned.

Oy, I'm hopeless. More help, please.

I'm a size 30/31 in 7FAM depending in the material and a size 31 Slim Jim would have been perfect for me. I would imagine that a size 28/29 would be what you are looking for in that cut. Just carry the waist measurement over to the different models to size accordingly. Just be careful with the thigh measurements. This is where the crotch blowout will come into play. The size 28/29 get pretty slim at 9.7" + 10".
