Smoothies & Other Recipes

I don't think there is a thread like this.
Everyone share their favorite healthy recipe for smoothies or other good snacks.
I just found this in my fitness magazine and it sounds good.

Strawberry Lime Ice

2 cups frozen strawberries, chopped and cleaned
4 limes
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons shredded coconut

In a blender purée berries, 3 limes (juice and zest taste) and honey until smooth. Spoon into 4 glasses and top with coconut and lime wedge.

Berry Smoothie (located on All recipies)

INGREDIENTS
2 cups frozen mixed berries
1 cup strawberry flavored yogurt
1 banana, sliced
1 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon white sugar (optional)

DIRECTIONS
In the container of a blender, combine the mixed berries, strawberry yogurt, banana, milk and sugar. Cover, and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve.

Note: of course you can leave out the sugar or use Splenda instead. For milk, you can use skim or 2% milk.

Smoothie

Basic: soy milk

add: fruit, also nice: frozen fruit
- no sugar, use a ripe banana instead and add one or two dates if still not sweet enough (but better wean yourself off of too sweet food)

Optional: if meant to be breakfast, ground millet is great (check the baby food section). Almonds. Cashews. Oatmeal. Try what you like.

No processed ingredients, no sugar, no artificial flavoring, nothing ready made.

Throw everything in the blender. No need to take the skin off apples, nectarines and the like. Nice fiber, and you can't taste it anyway.

Here is one I make for my kids. I don't know exact measurements because I just eyeball everything. Strawberries are the dominant flavor.

fresh strawberries
fresh blackberries
a good splash of pomegranate juice
a good splash of orange juice (optional)
cup of vanilla yogurt
ripe banana or add sugar to taste
fat free milk
Add protein powder if you so desire.
Blend it really well.

My absolute favorite:
Chocolate Aria protein powder (1 serving)
Chocolate soy slender soymilk
1/2-1 frozen banana
1 tb peanut butter
a few ice cubes
Blend and....enjoy! It's like drinking a reese's PB cup, but it's healthy! You can make it thicker by adding FF yogurt.

I also love to make one with plain NF yogurt, frozen strawberries, bananas, a splash of soymilk (soy slender vanilla), ice cubes, and vanilla protein powder. YUMMY.

Next we should discuss the best blender to make smoothies.

Um, I use a handheld model. It take a little longer but it so much easier to clean.

^Really? I find if I rinse whatever I'm making stuff in in hot water IMMEDIATELY after I make the smoothie it all cleans off.

My super simple smooth recipe:

1 whole fruit chopped up into chunks (apple, pear, peach, nectarine, whatever)
5 strawberries, halved (if you have them)
About a cup of juice (orange, pineapple, fruit punch)? I fill it up so its one inch underneath the top of the fruit
1 tablespoon of sugar

Blend all that together til smooth, add ice cubes until desired consistency.
This is great because you can throw it together with anything you have laying around.

I usually use apples, strawberries and orange juice. Sounds weird (apple smoothie what?) but tastes sooooo good

All these smoothies sound delicious

I have started having this for breakfast (as I have to up my protein intake)

blend all together:
3 teaspoons (20g) of Milo
1 - 2 scoops of Musashi Protein blend (vanilla or choc)
200ml of low fat milk
1 small banana
scoop of plain yogurt is optional (I don't because I don't like yogurt much )

^ Hi Jenn!

now that one sounds yummy
strawberries and bananas are my favourites

I love using my juicer in summer
I'd make a jug in the morning, then have a glass in the morning, lunch and finish it up in the afternoon.
I add anything and everything that was lying around
mainly 1 apple, 1 orange, 12 or so grapes, 6 or so strawberries, 1 carrot, 1/2 cucumber, 1/2 small pineapple, 2 peaches
just chop and juice!

cleaning the juicer is always a bugger though LOL

This isn't a smoothie, but I made it last night and it's delicious. It has pretty much all of my favorite stuff in it.

From the Food Network: Guacamole Salad

Ingredients
1 pint grape tomato, halved
1 yellow bell pepper, seeded and 1/2-inch diced
1 (15 ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
1/2 cup small diced red onion
2 tablespoons minced jalapeno pepper, seeded (2 peppers)
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated lime zest
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (2 limes)
1/4 cup olive oil
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
2 ripe Hass avocado, seeded, peeled, and 1/2-inch diced
Directions
1 Place the tomatoes, yellow pepper, black beans, red onion, jalapeño peppers, and lime zest in a large bowl.
2 Whisk together the lime juice, olive oil, salt, black pepper, garlic, and cayenne pepper and pour over the vegetables. Toss well.
3 Just before you're ready to serve the salad, fold the avocados into the salad. Check the seasoning and serve at room temperature.

It's supposed to serve 6, but I halved the recipe & ate it for dinner & then lunch today. The lime juice & olive oil prevented the avocado from turning grey.

BTW - Grape, cherry and on the vine tomatoes are not suspected of being contaminated with salmonella.

ETA: Forgot to say that I added some defrosted frozen corn to it as well.

That sounds sooo good, especially on a hot day when it's hard to eat. Jessani, where do you buy your protein powder?

As horrible as it sounds, I might have to try it if you can't taste it.

My smoothies usually consist of

Fresh strawberries or raspberries
Banana
1 Cup non fat vanilla yogurt
ice
splash of light cranberry juice

Some of these are more like shakes but it is usually stuff I add to my magic bullet cup and blend (I also add grounded flax seed as well):

This reminds me of black forest cake:

about 1/2 cup frozen pitted cherries
1 scoop chocolate whey protein
1/2-1 cup chocolate milk

Chocolate-coconut:

1 scoop chocolate whey
chocolate milk
1 tbsp unsweetened medium coconut
5-6 ice cubes

Chocolate oatmeal cookie:

1/4 cup quick cooking oatmeal
1 scoop of chocolate or vanilla whey
1/2-1 cup chocolate or skim milk

Cafe Mocha

1 scoop vanilla whey
1 tbsp cocoa
1/2 tbsp instant coffee
splenda to sweeten
skim milk
5-6 ice cubes
