No its not a bad thing. Its not like you're eating a big meal. If I eat then do a crazy workout, I get sick.

depends on what you mean before. i eat something..usually a peanut butter sandwich about an hour before i go do my weight training. if i'm just doing some cardio, i normally won't eat anything.

it really won't do much if you eat right before you go.

I prefer to eat afterward, but if I have a really empty stomach beforehand, I'll have something really light.

toast and tea seem like a litgh thing
I always eat a little something before, usually i take a shake or a sandwich, maybe a couple of eggs (boiled or scrambled), but I never work out with an empty stomach, I run out of gas to fast. I also eat after working out

I eat a greasy philly steak sandwich as I'm working out. I wonder why I'm not losing any weight.

Because shifting the sandwich from hand to hand doesn't count as a workout

I don't think it would hurt to eat something light. Eating within 30 mins after working out really boosts your metabolism though (in my experience).

I never do, but I usually hit the gym at 5 am, so I'm not at all hungry.

Eating before a hard cardio workout usually makes me want to hurl.

This is what I do....it motivates me through my cardio workout to be eating within 30 minutes of finishing.

On weights workouts days, I usually have a protein shake within 30 minutes of working out and then eat about an hour later.

Normally I work out within 30 minutes of waking up so I prefer to do it on an empty stomach. If I workout later in the day then I might have some protein drink or either a piece of fruit, nothing to heavy because it is not fun getting queasy during working out.

i agree...toast and tea is light. i usually have to have a snack before a workout, i am a "mini-eater". i never have full meals but little meals throughout the day. so, i need something otherwise i talk myself out of going to the gym because i am too hungry. i usually have fruit or nonfat yogurt.

i am the opposite of jessani - i never feel sick if i eat before a workout, but i feel sick if i don't eat (get light headed, ect.).

Toast and tea is perfect. Especially with some peanut butter on the toast. The only thing I don't like about running, is that it tends to f*ck up my stomach, making it harder to eat before and after a run...which sucks because I get light-headed if I don't eat every few hours. So I get more effective workouts when I snack beforehand AND after. In fact, I just get more effective...life...if I do that. Ha ha. I honestly don't think there is much correlation between when you eat, versus when you work out. I think it's more, what you eat or how much of it you eat, versus how often you work out.

Deepak Chopra disagrees with me though...and wrote this interesting blurb which you could probably find online, about the most ideal times to eat based on your body's natural rhythms. Surprisingly, he said that we digest food and burn calories most efficiently, from about 10 am to 1 pm or so. Which sort of shatters the whole Breakfast Is The Most Important meal thing if you're waking up early. There are a lot of theories out there but obviously everyone's different and I would be more inclined to listen to my own body before listening to the Internet or even to Deepak Chopra!

I read from somewhere that it's best not to eat before your workout b/c you'll just be burning the calories from that meal. Rather, eat something within an hour after your workout, something high in protein!

I always eat about an hour before I go to the gym. Usually a complex carbohydrate and a protein source. Most often, this is oats and a protein shake. If I plan to do some cardio, I usually have a few grams of branched chain amino acids before and sip throughout.

Working out on an empty stomach often leads to catabolism, which for most people is not an ideal state. The body than becomes more likely to burn muscle than fat

Hm...didn't see this thread earlier.

Anyways, like people've said, don't eat large before workouts. You'll end up burning those calories rather than those already stored in your body (I'd assume you'd want to burn the fat stored in your body, right?)

The toast and tea helps in your workout, I'd suspect, mainly because it has caffeine. That boosts your energy and metabolism for a while, which helps out during workouts. That's why a lot of fat burners/workout energy boosters contain caffeine.

After your workout, it's best to eat something small high in protein within the first thirty minutes or so. Then within the next hour, eat a whole meal.

grab some easily digested carbs before a workout.
eg. smoothie, juice, bar, fruits, etc.

save the high fibre stuff for later

Its best to eat something that will provide an energy boost, in turn making your workout that much better. If you're looking to eat a meal, it's best to eat it a few hours before your workout, in order for your body to fully digest everything. Drinking a shake or eating a bar 30 minutes-1 hour before your workout won't hurt. Hope that helps.
