My 10 Day Cleanse

Long post...

So a couple weeks ago I decided to try the Master Cleanse for 10 days. I wanted a fresh start off all the foods/beverages I eat that are not good for my body. And, of course, to clear anything out that might have been sitting inside for too long..

I technically began on June 22nd, but the day before I decided to go off caffeine. That was horrible. I've done it many times before but I always forget how bad the headache is. So I was in bed by 7 that night and just had a dull ache the next 2 days.

Friday was the 1st day of my cleanse and was probably the best day of it (well, except I did have to go to a wedding shower that night and watched everyone else eat shish kabobs and little smokies). I had the euphoria of starting something new and all that jazz going on. Day 2 was OK. I'd planned on staying home all weekend to give myself time to adjust to drinking the lemonade only. I still had to make food for my son so that part of it was difficult, but I just made myself drink more water/lemonade. Oh, and the salt water flush that starts the AM, YICK!!

3 & 4 were tough. Starting day 2 I began to get pains through my legs, my joints kept popping, and my lower back was at times killing me! That combined with the hunger pangs were almost too much. But I made it through both those.

5-7 were getting better. Even the salt water flush wasn't so bad by now. I didn't miss food much at all. My sense of smell by that time was quite heightened. So many people smell like stinky meat it's not even funny. Then again, I probably didn't smell any better. My tongue was coated with white and I had to brush my teeth 3-4 times a day since I'm overly-conscious of my breath. Cravings were down, but I had one incident. My son came home from a day trip with a basket full of deep-fried tater tots. They lasted around me for about 5 minutes then I told him he needed to go to the neighbors to eat because I didn't want a damn tater tot to ruin me.

8 & 9 were a breeze. I was thinking about breaking the cleanse with some veggie soup in a few days and planning my menu for the next week. My tongue was pretty much pink again. Lemonade was like a routine.

Today is day 10. I feel so good about what I accomplished. I will probably try another cleanse in about a month or so and keep it up a few times a year. I went to Fred Meyer and purchased a good amount of organic foods and veggies for my soup that I will make for Tuesday. Tomorrow I get to drink orange juice all day. That will be different.

Through it all I didn't feel overtired nor did I feel overly energetic. I was/am mellow and very clear headed, I guess the best words to describe it. My anxiety level is v. low when normally it can get quite high.

Menu for the 10days:
*Lemonade - 1.5-2 TBS of Grade B Maple Syrup, 2 TBS fresh squeezed lemon juice, 2 dashes of cayenne pepper and cold distilled water (I tried it warm but it tasted kinda yuk). 6+ times a day
*Smooth Move Chocolate tea - 1 cup every night before bed.
*Water - as needed
*Salt Water flush - 2 tsp of sea salt, 1 liter of lukewarm water. Every morning.

I heard beyonce did the same lemonade thing too. I wanted to try it too, but I love food too much!!!

So, the question, how much did you lose?

It's hard to say since a good amt of what I lost is water. Right now I'm down 12 lbs. I'm sure I'll gain at least half of that bad once I start eating again.

Congratulations on your cleanse- it sounds really intense and great, too! A friend of mine did one once, but he could only eat this green power stuff, but he said it was an amazing experience. Let us know how you feel as you start building foods back in!

Ok so, this might sound dumb, but did you only drink and not eat at all? I can't imagine that. Seriously, I would probably have to be hospitalized if I didn't eat for half that long. Also, if that's the case, what makes it ok to go without food? I've heard all kinds of things about crash dieting and losing weight very quickly being so horrible for you. Can someone explain the medical justification for this for me? I'm a bit confused.

^ Me too. I asked my mom about cleansing, and she said it's really horrible for you, because it flushes out all the bacteria that your intestines need to digest food. Or something to that effect, I don't remember exactly what she said

ooooomg 12lbs!!! ur probabley wasting away! i didnt think u were heavy to begin with... u had curves in all the right places! but thats besides the point... ur trying to change ur eating habits and get all the crap out of ur body... i hope u can stick with it! i'd love to try it but i dont want to lose that much weight... my goal is to get my skin to clear up... and maybe lose 5lbs..

cleansing does flush out good bacteria... i've heard of people taking acidopholis (sp) and lacto-whatever-bacteria in supplement form... just to keep the flora in balance

anyway, i have a question---- what does the maple syrup do? and does it have to be real maple syrup? (no pancake syrup? )

and how do u make the chocolate stuff?

i'm really curious... i think i might try this..

I didn't start the cleanse to lose weight. Sure I can stand to, but I was tired of being tired and feeling crappy all the time. Almost like when an alcoholic goes into rehab. Also couldn't get out of the craving bad food phase.

Yes it does flush all the bacteria out (good/bad) but once I start eating food again I will also take probiotics. You can also take probiotics after taking antibiotics since anti's also kill both the bad and the good bacteria.

Here's the Wiki for Juice Fasting.

In the long run I figure fasting for 10 days 2 or 3 times a year can't hurt my body any worse than when I eat the crap I sometimes crave. (Burgerville cheeseburgers anyone??) People have been doing it for ages.

I drank watered down OJ and water all day and made my veggie soup that I get to drink the broth of tomorrow.

Recipe: (all organic)
1/2 large white onion, chopped
1/2 green pepper, chopped
2 leeks, cut stalks in half then fine sliced into little moons
2 handful of sliced carrots
2 celery stalks, chopped
3 red potatoes, unpeeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
1 1/2 cups of kidney beans
3 tomatoes, seeded and diced
5 organic vegetable bouillon cubes
10 cups of water
2-3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Can't wait to actually eat some tomorrow night.

Here's a link to the newbie thread that I read before I started. It has the explanation to the maple syrup. Newbies

The tea is actually a type of Smooth Move by Traditional Medicinals. Nothing with actual chocolate. I just figured if I was going to drink tea it better have a word in it that I related to.

Wow. I am sooooo impressed that you made it all this time without food! There is no way in hell I could do it. I love food too much. I could possible do this for 3 days, tops. I need to majorily cleanse my system, I just can't even think of giving up eating.

I need to research this some more and see if there is something abbreviated that I can do! Awesome job!

I have always wanted to try something like this, but I'm with lawgal, not sure I could give up food for that long. Blond_gurrl, if you do it definitely post your results.

I only made it one day on this-- the sugar crashes from the maple syrup made me so upset and irritable that I was crying by 4 p.m. Me + no food = a bad scene.

Oh, but I'm hypoglycemic, so I probably shouldn't've tried it!

I don't think it's bad to go on a cleanse/detox once in a while as long as you are properly hydrated and do not have any past or preexisting medical problems (princesseab you already know hypoglycaemia and fasting is not the best thing for you!). Just make sure you start slow when you start eating real food again... start off with porridges and oats, then graduate to more solid foods.

Personally I find that after 2 days of so of not eating... all the cravings and urges go away. I did something like this once for 5 days except it wasn't for a detox... it was because I had a wisdom tooth surgery and they had to saw through a jaw bone. Needless to say I had to sip juices and water through a straw for that period of time

Anyone who plans on doing this for more than a few days should consider consulting their doctors. Also it might not be wise to do this if you are starting a new exercise program or menstruating.

Oh and... congrats cognac girl for making it through so many days p.s. I remembered you look really hot in your R&R slayers!

I know that I couldn't go that long without food. When I was younger, I would go an entire weekend without food when I was at Horse Shows. I just was too anxious to eat. But these days, I get far to irritable to go without food. Ask my bf.

Personally, I did a similiar "detox." I cut out fast food entirely. In fact, the last time I had something from McDonalds was because the girls that I babysit wanted to go there for lunch with their dad. It made me sick. I used to eat fast food alomost daily, and now the thought of it makes me sick. I also cut my pop intake to one a week. I mostly drink water. Cutting out most of that greasy processed food and pop along with starting horse riding lessons again, and I lost 10 pounds. I think it's really all you need if you don't think that you could fast for 10 days. I just think fasting for that long is too dangerous imho.

Thanks everyone!

Definitely edamame! Everything you said. I have no illnesses or pre-existing conditions that would be affected by cleansing so it was definitely all right for me. Doing research on cleansing is very important to succeed as well.

I sipped on OJ on all day, a piece of grapefruit and some of the broth tonight. It was wonderful! Could have been the fact that I haven't had food in a while, but I gave some to my parents who seemed to enjoy it as well. I get to have an actual bowl, veggies and all, tomorrow.

I also walked for 15 minutes at lunch today, went tanning and walked 1 mile on the treadmill tonight. It took me 20 min, but I'll get faster. The reading I've done on the forums states that some people can feel depressed after a fast so I'm doing everything I can to keep myself in the right frame of mine and exercising to keep my body happy. I hope it helps.
