Whey Protein

Do you think it works and aids in musclebuilding? Please share your opinions.

How Whey Protein "Helps"

1. They contain high levels of essential amino acids, which play an important role in stimulating muscle growth.

2. The various protein fractions in whey (such as alpha-lactalbumin and glycomacropeptide) would be difficult to get from food alone.

What are the benefits of these protein fractions?

There is research to show that whey protein enriched with alpha-Lactalbumin can reduce cortisol levels in stress-vulnerable subjects. And glycomacropeptide has been shown to stimulate the release of a hormone called cholecystokinin (pronounced coal-a-sister-kine-in), which has the effect of suppressing your appetite (see Popular whey protein supplements put to the test in the Members-Only Area for more information).

3. Because it has a lot of the lactose removed, a whey protein isolate may also be a good supplement for anyone with difficulty digesting lactose.

However, whey protein alone is not going to help you lose fat and build muscle. You'll need to combine it with a good diet and regular exercise if you want to see results.

I consume at least 1 (32 oz.) Whey shake a day, usually after my workout. I highly recommend Whey Shakes. They are low in fat, high in protein, contain a high concentration of Branched chain amoino acids and is easily digested.

Keep in mind there are 3 different types of Whey. Hydrolyzed Whey Protein (HWPI). Most easily digestible. This is the best form of Whey, but also the most expensive.

Whey Protein Isolate (WPI). I also recommend this type of whey. Lactose free and easily digestible.

Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC). I don't recommend this form of whey. It has a higher fat content and is not near as easy to digest as the other 2 forms of Whey. It is also the cheapest form of Whey, which results in a lower quality of protein

WPC also gives you protien farts

Whey is a staple when it comes to working out. Optimum Nutrition's 100% whey is what i use, and recommend to everyone. It has Branch chain amino acids that help you to retain muscle and burn fat.

Tip: Take it with something sweet such as Dextrose or Gatorade powder after your workout to give you an insulin spike. This will deliver the whey into your muscles faster insuring it get there while they are still swollen.

Protein is still cheaper than buying a steak and eatting it after.

I personally use Ultimate Nutrition wheyiso 93. It's decent. I think next month I'm going to use something with a bit more calories and creatine in it.

I use the GNC 100% Whey Protein stuff. Have been using it for about 1 year now. Any other suggestions for muscle building supplements that I could use in addition to whey? I'm not looking to take anything with creatine or stuff like thermogain that made one of my friends really volatile with his moods.

Protein farts/poo cleans out the system. I recommend it to everyone. When I first started using it I went poo poo like 10 times in a row.

i take creatine and an NO booster along with my protein and it seems to be working out well. i've trimmed down and gain some muscle weight. i would also recommend taking some dextrose immediately following your weight routine. honestly, i think if you change the 100% whey to a protein powder that has some additional aminos in it, you may see a differenct. i'm taking Optimum Nutrition Pro Complex...55g per serving plus extras. i would not buy anything from GNC..overpriced. i get all mine from Discount Supplements & Discount Nutrition - Best Price Sports Nutrition

same stuff at nearly half the cost. if you are wanting to gain weight, make sure you take at least 1g of protein per pound of body weight. i weight right at 160 so i make sure to take at least 160g of protein per day. hope this helps.

Since you are a girl, and the whey upsets your stomach, you might want to try soy protien. It's good for girls.

Thanks for your help Jesse! It's much appreciated. I do have a few questions. How many servings of that Optimum Nutrition Pro Complex do you take a day?
Right now, I'm taking 2 servings of the GNC protein with milk which comes out to be about 60g a day plus my meals. I usually work out every other day, so do you think I should be taking 3 servings of my protein for the time being until I make my decision to switch products?

Also, what does dextrose do?

Thanks.

Edit: Oops, I think one of your previous posts answered my question! Nevermind the mumbo jumbo I wrote!

lol. it just depends on what you eat during the day too. you might consider keeping a meal journal for a few days or a week just to see how many calories/carbs/protein you get a day...and at what time you are eating. if you are taking two servings of protein a day, it's a good idea to get one of those servings first thing in the morning. Then, the second one no later than 30 minutes after your workout. i also take about 20g before i go to bed, too. if you end up taking dextrose, take it while at the gym..right after your workout along with any post workout supplement(s) you are taking. then wait about 20-30 min to take your shake. dextrose will help push the supplements and protein into your muscles and also helps to restore lost carbs you used up during your workout.

Hey blondegirl!--as a lady who likes to workout with weights I highly recommend Lean Body for Her by Labrada Nutrition. That's a great after workout shake & has 30g of highly digestible soy protein. And sometimes I go for the EAS Myoplex deluxe chocolate shake which has 42g of protein, but has more calories. I use it if I'm replacing a meal, not as a snack. Try to mix with water first & see if you like the taste. If not, try skim milk with it

all marketing.

Any protein will seriously do.

I'd just recommend a whey isolate, just so you can skip the cholesterol.

whey isolate is good. still bothers me though. you might also try to take some papaya enzyme tabs a few minutes before shake time.

You should give Pro M3 a try. I think it is a great product. Tastes pretty good. I mix it with liquid yogurt. It has 50 grams per serving. It has a combo of 3 different types of protein (whey, casein and egg albumin)
ISS Research's Pro M3

Christine, what brand/flavor of whey protein do you use, and what do you do to it to make it into a shake?

I really need you to come give me a personal training session...I need muscles!

^^^ Jess, I like ISS Research products. I use their Whey protein. I am hooked on Pro M3 right now. I usually buy the vanilla flavored whey, but occasionally will switch it up with Chocolate. I have my shakes blended with liquid yogurt at the gym. I will throw in vanilla flavored yogurt, skim milk or water and ice when I make my shakes at home. I try to consume my weight in protein, which is 125 grams. That is why I like Pro M3. I can get 50 grams of protein in a serving.

How long does the ON Pro Complex 4.4lb bottle last you?
I am just about finishing my 2lb bottle of GNC protein and it's only been a little bit over 4 weeks.

Edit: I am working out every other day and consuming 2 20g shakes with milk everyday.

I'm actually allergic to milk protein (yeah, different than a lactose intolerance, and a pain in the ass since they manage to put milk protein into everything) so I use soy sometimes.

the 4.4 lbs lasts me about a 3 weeks or so. not really sure, i just re-order when i start getting low. i workout nearly everyday and take at least two 55g shakes per day. each scoop is half that so if you are only taking one scoop twice a day, it should last you a good while.

i'm considering doing this but i have mixed feelings. a part of me would love to gain some mass and cut up some of my features but the other part of me really enjoys being blessed with a high metabolism. it's hard for me to gain weight right now and i don't really mind it all THAT much. i would just hate to screw up my metabolism in the process. any ideas?

don't confuse protein powders with weight gainers. protein powders will help you pack on lean muscle mass. weight gain powders will do the same thing, but are overloaded with calories to help you gain weight muscle/fat. if you are lean and want to stay that way, i would recommend just lifting heavy and taking plenty of protein...about 1g per pound of body weight. if you want to gain weight overall and then trim down, go with the weight gainers.

thanks! i guess i've always looked at whey like a weight gainer. a friend of mine gave me (what looks to be) a pretty good workout plan so i think i'm gonna start getting the ball rolling.
