I am. I chew the Extra Polar Ice and it's not uncommon for me to chew 15 sticks a day. Normally, I'm probably around 10 per day.

I would worry more about what it does to my jaw rather than the sweetners, but thats just me. A lot of people that chew gum all the time have jaw issues. Perhaps if Pam reads this thread she could tell you more about what damage, if any, are caused by the sweetners. At any rate, its a whole lot better than smoking. Gum didn't work for me so I use an e cig.

Excessive gum chewing has been definitely correlated with increase in TMJ problems, but no cause-effect relationship has been shown to my knowledge. Overuse of the muscles of mastication can additionally cause muscle fatigue, spasm, and lead to headache and other orofacial pain.

I like to think of this way - while you are chewing all this gum, your body is working extra hard to produce tons of saliva, and also your intestinal system is working overtime thinking you are about to process actual food. All this energy and resources could be much better put to use in other vital body processes.

Aspartame sweeteners have also been linked to cancer and diabetes (though they have no risk to oral structures, and the increased saliva while you are chewing leads to a DECREASE in caries risk (caries = cavities) )

There is actually a massage technique that we sometimes use on people that have TMJ. It sounds really gross, but it does seem to work for some people. We just glove up and go in LOL. It’s not done very often and when it is the person has requested it. I do this for my husband who grinds his teeth all the time in his sleep. He also uses a night guard from his dentist because if he didn’t I would kill him. It’s like nails on a chalk board when I am trying to sleep.

I hope that if you're constantly chewing gum, you make sure to do it with your mouth closed. It's so gross to work with people who chew gum with their mouth open and snap it (or worse, blow bubbles!).

I find gum really annoying because my jaw gets tired and I get bored of it, but I think that's probably kind of unusual.

^ Yeah, I chew gum with my mouth shut because loud gum chewers annoy the hell out of me. My mom is one of those loud chewers and she snaps her gum all the time too. I love her, but she sounds like a horse when she chews gum.

lol not going to the dentist might be a bigger problem than your addiction to gum.

Well I can guarantee you that chewing gum is not replacing professional cleanings and exams every 6 months. Gum does not clean your teeth. Period. It increases saliva which contains antibacterial properties that will reduce bacteria, but that does not amount to cleaning. And it certainly does nothing for your gums.

An entire pack of gum a day is really excessive

I chew a ton of gum at work. I'm very fidgety so I feel like chewing gum helps - plus it keeps me from snacking constantly. That said, I probably only chew 4-5 pieces a day because my jaw gets sore.

I definitely snap/blow bubbles for the same fidgety reason I guess I should start closing my office door so I don't drive everyone else nuts.

Perhaps this may be related to your nausea/stomach acid problem from your thread! Chewing gum increases stomach acid because your body thinks it's preparing to digest actual food

You also swallow a lot of air (gas) when you chew gum, which also increases reflux

I have been to drs and dentists and orthodontists, and no one has suggested gum could be contributing to my migraines... But makes sense! I have gum in my mouth a lot, although I don't really "chew" it that much though. I should stop for a bit and see if it makes a difference, hmmm.

(although the gum replaced the habit of brushing my teeth way too much. I just am addicted to that "fresh" feeling, I'll have to find another habit to replace it I think.)
