extra points at the end of the day...

Hey WW ladies! I was wondering what you do when you have a bunch of extra points left at the end of the day? I know that its important that you actually use/eat all of your alloted points...or at least thats what they say at the meetings

I had breakfast, lunch and a snack and still had 17 points left for the day. All that I had in the house to make for dinner was the fixings for a huge salad so that's what I had....only 5 points though. So I had 12 points left I hadn't had any dairy yet today so I just had 2 skinny cow cones I threw out the box, but I am assuming that it is probably 5 pts for 2. So, now here I sit with 7 pts left for the day

I know that I really should plan my whole day's menu out in advance to avoid this situation, but when I used to do that it really felt like a "diet" and not a lifestyle choice...if that makes any sense. I found myself straying from the menu and then going over my points.

Any advice?

SEriously though, I question whether or not it is better to eat "junk" to finish off my points, or nothing at all. I meant to ask at my WW meeting last night, but we got wrapped up in another topic on top of the dining out one. I idin't realize I forgot to ask until I was half way home

dawn.. those pom seeds look yummy. i may have to try those! if at end of day and i had ex pts i would splurge on dessert (like the two skinny cows you had) but i dont know beyond that.. i like saving pts for dinner/dessert when i am doing ww even though i know all say to eat less at dinner/night. it's a good prob to have.. extra points at end of day but i am not sure what i woudl do if it happened often.. asking at the meeting seems like a good idea, i agree!

I don't do WW either, but eating junk food to use up your points seems very counterproductive.

^werd, especially at the end of the day.

Eat sweets at the end of the day, you can expect to wake up to 'em on your thighs. That's just the way it goes.

The best option, of course, is to plan a bit better: so you can use those points in a more spread-out manner throughout the day. If you slip up (as everybody does every now and then) and have extras at the end of the day, then try and grab something healthy. Stay away from the processed carb bombs...those will only hinder your progress, especially at night.

The reason they say that it's important to take use all your points is likely to prevent muscle wasting. Lots o-times people will put themselves on starvation diets when they feel like they wanna lose weight, and will drop 15 pounds in a month before gaining it all right back. Problem is they're losing about 6 pounds of fat and 9 pounds of muscle. The loss of muscle leads to a slower metabolism, and makes it harder to keep the weight off.

So...my .02.

Studies show that a moderate amount of dark chocolate is good for you. I didn't recommend she binge on jelly bellies and starburst.

Denying yourself any kind of treat is also a recipe for diet failure as it can cause binge behavior. it is better to indulge in a healthy, moderate manner on things with some antioxidant benefits such as dark chocolate covered pomegranates, and a day with low points is the perfect opportunity to do so.

It doesn't matter what time of the day you eat. All that matters is calories per day. Doesn't everybody know that?

If I end up with a lot of extra points I either eat something I've been wanting or just not eat them at all (which rarely happens )

But 99% of the time if I have extra points I use them on some sweets

Oi, I wish I had points left at the end of the day! lol
I would suggest using them on a treat you normally couldn't fit in point wise! As it sounds like you had eaten healthy so far, you deserve it!

On the off chance that this isn't a sarcastic comment...

Calories are ultimately the most important factor, but they are not the ONLY factor. This is because different nutrients metabolize at different rates.

Sugars metabolize very quickly, and provide a large *instant* burst of energy. If the energy isn't used soon after it becomes available, it gets stored as fat. Once the calories from sugars are broken down and stored, it's harder for the body to burn off.

Thus why it is a good idea to stay away from simple, refined carbs when one isn't engaging in physical activity - like at the end of the day, or right before bedtime.

If I have extra points at the end of the day I will consider if I've met the healthy guidelines and I will try to eat something that meets one of those (glass of milk or a cheese serving for dairy, sometimes I'll pop some stove popcorn with olive oil for the oil requirement, etc.)

How did you have 17 points left for the day? Waht did you eat earlier in the day? That seems like an awful lot of points to have as 'leftovers'.

This is EXACTLY what I meant. I had fulfilled the healthy eating giudelines for the day and had several points left over. Having had so many zero point foods during the day, I didn't know if it were bad to just leave the rest of my points unused (not consume enough calories for the day) or have another snack type food.

After looking back at my tracker, this was what I had that day

Breakfast on the run
black coffee 0pts
Fiber one bar 3pts
banana 2pts

Lunch
2 slices Lite Whole Wheat bread 1pt
1 can tuna 2pts
1 T Smart Balance Mayo 1pt
celery/onions/several pieces of romaine 0pts

Dinner
Crap load of Roamine 0pts
Crap load of Spinach 0pts
1 cup Garbonzo beans 2pts
1 1/2 Cup strawberries 1pt
1 Manderine Orange snack cup w/juice 1pt
Walden Farms Raspberry Vin dressing 0pts

2 Skinny Cow cones 5pts

I Still had 7 points left as I (at the time) got 27 points a day as a nursing Mom

Now that I am almost done weaning Connor, it is a rare occasion that I have this amount of points left at the end of the day. After dinner, I may have 4 or 5 points that I will use for a Skinny Cow Icecream snack and a glass of wine or a bag of lite popcorn.

I did not mean to start a debate about what diets are healthy and which are not, nor to have people get into a pissing contest about who knows the most about nutrition. I was merely looking for input from the the people who follow the WW guidelines as a means of losing weight and maintaining their weight loss. I had a crazy day and had not planned my meals because of it. I guess next time I should just post a question like this right in the WW thread

I hope I did not come off as rude - I just meant that in general, if you aren't hungry, you don't usually need to force yourself to eat. Some days people just are less hungry, and some days they are more hungry, and that is okay. I love desserts and I especially love them at night!

Wow, a cup of garbanzo beans is only 2 points? That's awesome!!

Your day looks really good and really healthy. I think it's ok to occassionally have left over points but if you do it on a regular basis then you can slow down your losses.

Wine and popcorn are my go-to's at the end of the day too. That and WW Giant Fudge Bars. Yum!

ETA: After a 2nd look at your menu, it looks like you are missing the 2 dairy servings, one lean protein serving, and 2 tsp of healthy oil. I don't think ice cream counts as a dairy serving. So I would have used the points for a glass of milk or slice of cheese, something with the oil (popcorn, bread dipped in oil, etc) and possibly some lean protein. Perhaps a turkey/cheese rollup to meet 2 requirements.

I just found out tonight that icecream doesn't count as a dairy

My menu kinda sucked because I was due to go grocery shopping that day but other stuff came up so I was lacking options in the food department...hence the canned garbonzo beans on my salad instead of a chicken breast or deli meat and canned tuna for lunch...it was a raid the pantry kind of day

Haha! I totally have those days too! Right now I'm trying to clean out our freezer b/c we're moving soon, so I have all kinds or random meat: Ahi Tuna, Chicken Breasts, Turkey breast, lean ground beef, etc. I'm going to be making a lot of meat and then just having salad as a side or something easy like brown rice.
