Suppressing appetite?

Hi everyone,
I'm just wondering if there is any product or food that really suppresses appetite? I'm always hungry. I've tried drinking a lot of water, but then I feel worse after. I've gained 10lbs since last year. I also changed my birth control to the implanon time release "injection". I would always just take the pill before. Except in high school I was on the shot and gained massive amounts of weight. I am considering taking it out of my arm, but my doctors office keeps telling me it's a very good bc. I just feel lethargic all the time and have a hard time falling asleep. Also within the last year, I've switched jobs to a desk job. I rarely get to walk around for the 8 hour day I work. I try to get up and down as much as I can. It also doesn't help when the co workers in my area of the office are always talking about food or bringing it back to the office.
Is there any healthy supplement I could try? Or anything that will give me energy? I don't drink coffee and I am trying to stop drinking soda all together.
Any suggestions or advice would greatly be appreciated

Chew gum or brush your teeth whenever you have an appetite; you'd also be suprised by the wonderful appetite suppressing effect of smoking a cigarette.

There is a difference between "hunger" and "appetite", make sure you are actually hungry.

I personally like to chew on celery or some fruit.

fats suppress appetite more than any other food group, per caloric portion.

you need to start eating regularly, which i have a feeling you are not.

If you just generally aren't feeling good, you may want to have a physical and see if anything else is going on? If your B.C. is making you feel bad, I'm sure there are other options for you (most hormonal BC is really effective--I went through a few different ones before finding the best for me).

Just as a random example, I was hypothyroid for a few years before it was diagnosed (I was in my 20s, only regular doc visits were annual gyno), had similar symptoms (weight gain, lethargy). I sort of wrote it off as life transition stuff (I was for the first time out of school, working full time, had more money to eat out and less time to work out), was diagnosed at a random ER visit, the medication has made a huge difference for me.

Anyway, not saying that is definitely you, just that I wish I had gone and gotten a work-up instead of assuming my problem was my job/life.

Good luck!

If this all started when you got the Implanon, it's likely just not a good BC for you. Some BC methods, despite being effective and fine for most people, don't suit everybody.

This is something you should definitely talk to your doctor about. As others have suggested, it could have something to do with the form of BC you are taking, and if it's a serious problem, the doctor can prescribe an appetite suppressant.

99% sure it's the BC you're on.

It'll be a year in August that I had the bc in. The doctors say, give it a year. I only have been feeling this way for about 5 months. I had my thyroid checked and everything was ok. I had hypoglycemia, but after changing my diet around: it went away. My one doctor prescribed me adderal because I was so tired. It helped, but then I had to take something to sleep.. so kind of defeats the purpose.
I just hate feeling exhausted. I think because I feel exhausted, I feel hungry.
I think I might go back to no bc at all. I felt better, no acne, and wasn't always hungry. I used to be able to "train" myself to eat less in about a day or two. I'd dramatically reduce my intake and by day two, I didn't feel as hungry with less breakfast. I do that now and I feel like crap. I feel like I haven't eaten anything in days when I eat less.
This probably sounds really stupid. I wish I could control it, but it's not a craving for anything particular. It's just hungry snacking

I'd recommend getting rid of all the "snack" foods: they're a temptation that you don't need.

Try separating your meals into 6 separate servings per day, about 3 or so hours between each. Plan your meals: make sure that each meal is balanced and satisfying, but not over-indulgent. Plan so each meal has a good healthy (mostly unsaturated) fat and fiber content, those two will do the most for suppressing your appetite. Stay away from refined carbs though, as many of those will incur a blood sugar crash that will make you crave more later on.

These are good habits regardless of what birth control you are taking.

^ yeah I was going to say get rid of the soda. Better to drink regular coffee or espresso if you need the caffeine. Not the venti carmel fraps or similar drinks though as they are like eating a meal and are also full of sugar.

she's not going to get the results she wants until she's off the hormones.
BC makes the body think it's pregnant, and for some people, it feels like morning sickness.

i was on the pill to regulate my cycle in high school when i was running; i remembered how i felt then when i got pregnant and had morning sickness.

the only way to get rid of that nagging, semi-nauseated feeling was to eat. protein just sounds icky, so carbs are often the choice. "planning meals" when you have that pit in your stomach...easier said than done, i'm afraid. hormones are very very powerful.

it's really not controllable for some, and if you don't have a speedy metabolism (i lucked out there), you'll gain weight or not be able to lose it.

go off the BC and see what happens after a few months.

^^^ Yes, it is really not possible to fight the hormones for an extended period of time. I am very weight and diet conscious, and I am probably more careful with my diet than anybody that I know. When I went on the pill after a hiatus, I was so legitimately hungry that I gained 10 lbs in 2 weeks. I probably would have waited more but I stopped and never took BC again. It is just not worth it for some people.

I hear what you're saying: the birth control pills in this situation are complicating the matter. I'm inclined to agree, hormones have a powerful influence.

I don't quite believe that hormones can *make* a person do things though: that would imply that the hormones are stronger than the person. Hormones can certainly chip away at a person's willpower, but the final decision on what to put in one's mouth falls on the person.

The same principle applies with what one puts in their shopping cart when they're at the grocery store: only at this point, it's a bit easier to make the decision to avoid junk food. Keeping simple, refined carb snack foods around is setting oneself up for failure.

You may have a point, though: perhaps the better advice for this point in time (from a diet perspective) would be to cut out those refined foods, rather than start a meal plan. Focusing on eating more foods that provide long-term satiation won't hurt the situation, though.

This is what I'm going to try. I remember this time last year, I wasn't on the implanon or shot. And I felt great. I took the pill and then had to take a month break every once and a while. I get bad headaches from hormones and acne. I'm getting my implanon out next Wednesday. It truly feels like no matter what I eat I'm starving and want more. I'm tired and nauseous all day. I am for sure not pregnant as well.
I don't knoe if this sounds weird but, I think I can take the pill... but I can't do any of the extended release BC (shot, implanon). My breast a huge and swollen all the time too. The doctors kept saying it was normal, but it sucks.
I am hoping and keeping my fingers crossed

Thanks everyone for listening.

Just wanted to say, I got the birth control out of my arm and I've dropped 5lbs already I dont' feel crappy, hungry or tired all the time. However I am having the hardest time falling to sleep all night

I'm really glad you all opened my eyes to just removing that... best choice. My advice too.. is don't get Implanon for BC. I am going to have about a 1cm scare on my arm because it wouldn't come out easy. It's in a hidden spot... but still.

glad you got off that BC. i was quite positive it was behind your issues.
it will take your body some time to wean itself from the hormones, so insomnia may be there for a bit. don't worry, that too will fix itself; don't medicate that though or you'll wind up in a vicious cycle.

have you tried a warm bath at night? warm drink? reading makes me tired, but it has to be a boring book.

Currently I'm internet web browsing.. lol but I just grabbed a glass of wine and I'm hoping that will work for me. Thank you for your advice. I was so worried I'd regret taking it out, but I don't!
I wish I could take a bath or something at night. It wakes me up though I did just buy a book called L.A. Candy. I'm going to try to read that before I sleep. Reading knocks me out
I'm starting the gym again tomorrow. I'm excited!
