Alcohol in Phase 1 of South Beach..

Okay so I have been on South Beach diet for about 4 days now and I am going absolutely crazy!!!

I didnt realize how much my body was addicted to sugars and bad food!

My question is, I tend to party alot and drink on the weekends. Would it mess up my diet totally if I drank alot on Friday and Saturday night. No beer, just vodka.

Thanks for the help.

South Beach is pretty strict on the no alcohol rule. Each shot of vodka contains around 100 calories so a hard night of partying can easily be a days worth of your caloric intake.

Argh. Well maybe I'll do one night and take the other night off.

Maybe a lower calorie alcoholic drink that I could drink?

Thanks

Alcohol on any diet is bad. Not just for the caloric content but the way your body metabolizes the alcohol. Mathematically, a lower calorie drink may sound good but either way it's not worth it.

You can try vodka + club soda with a splash of lime juice. It doesnt taste too bad, and its pretty low calorie considering its alcoholic.

What is the point of a diet if you don't follow it?

All hard alcohols will have around 100 cals per 1.5 ounce serving. Drink with a diet mixer and in moderation, but the sooner you cheat the harder it is to stay on track. Alcohol also makes me hungry and eat more than I would sober.

Sounds like you are a pretty heavy drinker. Be careful. Also, alcohol isn't just bad for ANY diet...it's bad in general when consumed in an abusive way to get "wasted" or drunk. Try to limit your drinking to one night a week. Just my .02!

I checked it out and they say its about 64 calories per 1.5 oz which isnt terrible. I dont think it will make me want to cheat though in this case.

Yes I do like to drink alot. I dont try and get completely wasted or ridiculously drunk, I like to get a little buzzed. I know its terrible for the diet.

The more you drink, the more you will lose. Mixed drinks, frozen drinks, and margaritas are the best picks for dieters.

I learned this in a nutrition class which still sticks out in my mind:

Fat: 1 gram = 9 calories
Protein: 1 gram = 4 calories
Carbohydrates: 1 gram = 4 calories
Alcohol: 1 gram = 7 calories

Alcohol has the second highest caloric content of the four categories. Let's say it takes you 3 oz of alcohol to arrive at your "buzzed" state (approximately 2 shots). The method to consume the fewest calories possible would be to drink the 2 shots of vodka with no mixer. Basically, there is no "Splenda" equivalent for alcohol.

if you don't have the discipline to refrain from drinking you probably don't have the discipline to lose weight.

^^^ Lots of people lose weight without doing any weird diets with 'phases.' I don't think that young people wanting to drink is that unusual. When I was in undergrad, I did a fair amount of drinking and I was never fat. I still ate well and exercised lots, and I was certainly not undisciplined.

That said, I reduced my drinking drastically and am very happy with the results! And when I do want to drink, it's fantastic being a lightweight - alcohol is expensive (moreso where I live than other parts in canada or in the US) and very caloric.

Good luck with the South Beach. I learned a lot just from reading the book and making small changes to my lifestyle. Vodka and diet orange soda is yummy. Plus if you aren't eating any carbs one shot might be enough.

Difference is, you weren't on an actual diet. Mr. OP is.

agree w/ this.

Personally I have never went on a diet. My eating habits have evolved though from junk to healthy to even healthier. I drink 0 - 2 times a week, usually 1 or 2 glasses of red wine, a few shots of saki or 1 or 2 pints of beer. Doing this in moderation is not going to make much difference overall. It can actually be healthy once in a while.

If you are serious about maintaining your diet cut back on drinking. Also if you do drink and have a serious exercise routine along with the diet make sure you are drinking enough water since alcohol causes dehydration.

Diets are stupid. We all know that losing weight can be achieved through various ways of eating. So I don't see why it matters that he is doing a specific diet, other than that the calories in the alcohol will slow his progress (as they would on any eating plan).

Isn't dieting a "way of eating"?

desm0nd, i'm loosely on the Atkins diet and now pretty much just a WOL (way of life). i would try to keep alcohol to a VERY VERY minimum during the first "stages" of your diet. the first weeks i was on it, i went out partying. i drank diet coke and vodka or whiskey on the rocks. mostly, i forced myself on the dance floor so i wasn't drinking (usually i stay on the sideline and down like 12 drinks a night. lol).

hang in there!

Ok here's the deal, alcohol is bad:
1) Calories in the alcohol itself
2) Slows your metabolic rate
3) You get hungover so it's harder to work out
4) You get drunk and eat crappy food because you are drunk
5) Dehydrates you
6) You lose nutrients that your growing muscles require.

All that being said, it's no fun to put all this work into looking good and then just sit at home by yourself on saturday night. And I can't stand bars sober, so I know what you are talking about. Here are strategies that I use and combine to varying degrees of success.

1) Plan your diet and workout so that the day after your drinking you do not have anything scheduled other then maybe some cardio. In the summer I like to rollerblade for a few hours or play some soccer, basically something that I enjoy so it doesn't seem like a workout.

2) Probably the best thing I have found is alternate alcohol then water. ie drink whatever you want, I usually did double rye and diet, and then your next drink is a water, then booze, then water. Just avoid sugary mixes. This works really well as it helps keep you hydrated which can counter many of the negative effects of the booze, and you can keep a decent buzz without getting hammered.

3) Make something healthy that you can eat when you get home by just throwing it in the microwave. Your going to be drunk and lazy so you probably won't cook. Left over whole wheat sphagetti with turkey meat sauce works well for example. And throw some veggies on there, like chopped up peppers, or i eat some snap peas with it. You eat that, have some more water and you are ahead of the curve.

Anyways best of luck man.
