I can't control my eating

I am a very healthy person. I work out about 6 days a week and I eat a very balanced diet. I am doing the body for life program (Body-for-LIFE) and I have always had a hard time controlling my eating. For instance, yesterday was the Superbowl. We of course had tons of snacks out. I ate and ate and ate. I would eat until I was full. Sit down for an hour, then eat until I was full again. If there is food in front of me, I will eat it, even if I just ate a full course meal. I love snacking. I love sugar. The program I am on right now is to eat six times a day, small meals. Breakfast, lunch and dinner should be portions no bigger than my fist, and healthy snacks in between. Eating every 3 hours. I do a good job at keeping my blood sugars up and stuff, but I just have a hard time with snacking. Does anybody have any advice? I try to eat as much protein as I can. But even when I am full and satisfied and not physically hungry, I will rummage through my cabinets and refrigerator looking for sugar or something to just snack on.

I feel like I am very compulsive. Of course with my spending and alcohol. I have been sober a year on Christmas. I stopped drinking because I could never have JUST ONE drink. I had to get drunk. I of course have an addiction to spending. I think all of us do on this website LOL! But I am trying to be healthy and eat right and exercise. But I am having a hard time with my eating. Is anybody else like this? I am trying to be healthy. I quit smoking and drinking and gave up a very unhealthy lifestyle. I've lost 20 pounds and I can't seem to lose the last 7 that I want to lose LOL!

If you quit smoking recently that could be the culprit. I forgot what the time line is but to be a full non-smoker, I think all the bad cravings and snacking takes 2 years.

I don't think you need to loose any weight, if that's any consolation

I agree.

It could be the smoking & it can also be that you have a high motabolism.
Some people also eat more when they are depressed or anxious.

I agree with Missy; judging by your wishlist, you have no need to lose weight! (unless you're like 1 foot tall, which I doubt lol) It could definitely be the smoking or just a high metabolism. It was just one day, and I doubt you're going to Superbowl parties every day, so I wouldn't worry too much about it

Bodies tend to rebel when you're not eating enough to fuel the activity you're doing, or try to go lower than a healthy weight for your body.

Most people occasionally eat food that's in front of them when they're not hungry though.

I'd recommend reading Neal Barnard's "Breaking the Food Seduction" to understand this better.
Not because you need to loose weight, but because it's very important to know about addictive mechanisms.

By the way, if the website is anything to go by, I'd recommend a more healthier diet...As in more natural etc.

I'll second that.

A body craves nutrition, not just calories necessarily. If you're eating a lot of processed foods (whenther or not they're low cal) you may not be getting the right amount of nutrients. By eating nutrient rich, natural unprocessed foods you can cut down on cravings.

I think eating a diet full of nutrient-rich, unprocessed foods worked for me. I used to eat everything and anything (sometimes still do!) and i am very sugar/carb-dependent. Once I started eating more protein and cutting REFINED sugar out almost completely, I felt a lot better and stopped craving those snacks. I gotta get back to that!! good luck

I use to workout 5 to 6 days a week. The more I worked out, the more I could eat. I ate like a horse, but I stayed hungry 24/7. Maybe you just need more fuel because of your workout schedule?

I'm the same way. I recently quit smoking pot. I quit because it was actually making me lose weight, instead of eating I would smoke more. Its been over 2 months now and lately I've been inhaling everything in sight. I've starting gaining weight which was my goal but now my size 25 jeans are beginning to feel super snug For some reason I can't stop thinking about food My doctor told me to try and eat as much protein as possible and I won't feel so hungry all of the time. And she told me to snack on nuts, fruits and veggies (ick!) I'm still working on that...
sorry to threadcap

i'm probably the last person that should give advice on this subject considering i'm extremely unhealthy, but here are a few things that i've noticed in myself that struck a chord in what you said. with your intial 20 pound weight loss (which is amazing, congrats!!), i tend to think that the initial extra weight people carry around comes off very quickly and easily but dieting or exercise or whatever your poison is. it's always those last 5-10 pounds that are the most stubborn, which imo, are the pounds that you kinda just want to lose to be what you think is ideal. i've seen your pictures and i think you're gorgeous and don't need to worry about those extra seven, personally. another thing is with the snacking is that possibly you're bored? not necessarily that you don't have anything to do, but perhaps it isn't engaging. i work out of someone's house who has a ten year old daughter and there is candy and sugar and snacks galore. i get up from whatever i'm doing or not doing and grab a piece of candy many times a day. or just go open the fridge to see what there is. and i'm not even hungry!! however, i have really excellent willpower so i generally make it a challenge for myself to say i'm not going to eat any candy today or whatever it is.

it's hard and i think you've done an amazing job in so many ways. the drinking, the smoking, the diet and exercise. i'm blown away and i hope you stay on a healthy path. you look great!!

My guess is that you're trying for a weight below what is healthy for your body. When I drop below 110 pounds and i'm working out and controlling my intake, I am ravenous all the time!!

I'm the same way on a number of things you mentioned. It has been 11 years since I have had a drink and I wonder if I could just have A glass of wine. Since I still wonder I just don't!
About the eating, I just let myself eat as much as I want as long as it is natural food such as nuts, fruit or whole grains. I teach 5 fitness classes a week and want to remain healthy so I feel that if I am truly hungry, my body needs something.
Make sure you are drinking tons of water!
Last thing, I use the 80/20 rule. I eat healthy 80% of the time and 20% of the time I eat whatever I want! This allows me to indulge my sweet tooth or enjoy myself without restrictions at social gatherings.
And I've seen your pix, too and you are gorgeous so don't trouble yourself too much!

I don`t think you have to loose weight too, but I can understand that it is a problem. I have this problem with chocolate and candy in general...I`m eating toooooo much of it and sometimes I can`t stop. Because I`m not gaining weight I`m not forced to do somthing to stop it, but I think I should reduce it a little bit.

Mhh, I eat lot of nutrients; doesn`t help me. I think I need chocolate and food to be happy, so perhaps you have the same problem?
Some people say, it should help to put the stuff away, so you can`t see it...and so you don`t have to eat it!
Congrats that you stopped drinking! That`s GREAT!

I am in a similar boat to you my dear. I actually did the body for life quite a few years ago and i thought it was really good with regards to teaching you how to workout and how to portion your meals. But i agree with jenn that their diets tend to be high in refined unatural foods such as the protein shakes and bars which to me are probably worse then eating a small chocolate bar.

I am addicted to sugar and it has taken a lot for me to cut most of it out of my diet. What i have found works is looking for things that are similar to what you crave but more nutritious. For example, i make hot coco with coco powder and unsweetened chocolate almond milk (i put stevia in it). Curbs my chocolate cravings and it is good for you!

Also if you are hungry all the time then maybe your body is telling you that you need more food due to the amount of activity you are getting. When i was a bit more active then i am now (before i started working these early morning and later hours in the day) i was eating like a horse but i was also loosing weight.

Look at when you are snacking...is it when you are home along and bored? Sometimes i eat just for the sake of eating or tasting something when i am bored. And no you aren't going to be at a super bowl party every day ;)

And you do look great so i wouldn't worry about how many pounds you need to loose or what the scale says! In fact if you are doing body for life those 7lbs you want to loose are probably wonderful beautiful muscle that you worked hard for!

Is there a way to calculate what a healthy weight "for your body" is?

^ Not really; bone structure plays a huge role. I am considered 20-30 pounds underweight according to my height, but my bones are very thin. So many factors affect your weight; BMI is more important.

Agree with this, it's a problem for me.

Another thing I found is that I often mix up being hungry with being thirsty... without realising it.
Do you drink plenty of water during the day?
