Fish oil & flax seed

Linds' recent posts have inspired me to start taking fish oil so I'm trying to figure out what to get. Would it be too much to take pure fish oil, flax seed oil and a multi-vitamin pill everyday? What do you take and how much? Please suggest specific products that can be found in stores but online is okay too. Also, does anyone know of a US company that does not use ingredients from China? (like Jamieson Labs in Canada) Thanks!!

Flax seed oil doesn't make much sense IMO. Do you need more alpha-linolenic acid? Or are you trying to balance out the Omega-6 that's too much in your diet? Because then you'd need eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
Here's some info: Omega-3 Fatty Acids - July 1, 2004 - American Family Physician.

I don't take anything, but my dog gets salmon oil to fight inflammation from her arthritis. If she didn't have arthritis, I wouldn't even give her the oil, as she gets only meat etc. from free range animals that have a perfect Omega-3 to Omega-6 ratio anyway.

Why would you need fish oil AND flax oil together? Don't they basically serve as the same supplement?

I take flax oil because I can't stand the smell of fish oil supplements. btw, you shouldn't take it with the vitamin, because the oil might interfere with absorption of some vitamins and minerals. I usually take my multi with breakfast and the flax oil with lunch or dinner.

I agree with what Jenn said, Fishoil is going to be the best for you. Now here comes the tricky part. You need high quality fish oil. The best way to find out if your fishoil pills are high quality is to put the bottle in the freezer (you should always store them in the freezer anyways because this helps keep them fresh and reduced any sort of taste or "fish burbs") If they turn cloudy, then the fish oil isn't high quality and you will need to take more. It is quite difficult to find fish oil that is good quality though, however if you are willing to spend the money, i would order this stuff:

Figure Athlete - FLAMEOUT!

Since my BF and i tend to be on the frugal side, we usually just get those huge bottles of the lower quality fish oils at costco and we take 10 pills in the AM after breakfast and 10 pills in the pm after dinner.

Hemp is also a product that has a wonderful omega 3-6-9 balance, and you can get hemp seed butter, oils, powder and seeds (yes they are legal and no you can't grow them into pot). Manitoba Harvest is a company that has exc3excellent hemp products.

We also give the dogs salmon oil because of their "arffritis". Shelby, who is the oldest and has the worst arthritis also gets glyco-flex with contains green lipped muscles, apparently really good for your joints. We feed the dogs and ourselves free range beef, buffalo and sometimes elk, always grass fed (perfect omega 3-6-9 balance, and much less fat then normal red meat).

Hope this helps somewhat

I'm pretty sure I get plenty of Omega-6 so I do need EPA and DHA. If I understood the article correctly, ALA will be converted to EPA so I might as well get EPA directly, right? Unfortunately, I rarely get to eat free range meat here so I have to resort to supplements The article definitely helps, thank you!

I was assuming I need EPA, DHA and ALA. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks Linds! I have never had hemp! The Figure Athlete product is "for men" I wonder if they added anything else, probably just a marketing thing. I couldn't bring myself to swallow 20 big pills a day so I might have to spend extra for the pure stuff. Has anyone heard of Omega 3 / DHA Esters from New Zealand? It's supposed to the purest and safest. Should I buy some or is it too good to be true?

Can you guys recommend a good multi-vitamin brand too?

Yes, because you don't convert enough ALA to get enough EPA. That's why for example giving flax seed oil to dogs makes no sense, as they need more EPA.

That looks like a pretty cool website. i sent it to my BF who is the posterboy for fishoils and he may be able to tell us if it looks good.

I will take the flameout myself, I think the whole "men" thing is really just a marketing tool.

I take Carlson lemon-flavoured liquid fish oil. I just take a teaspoon-ish daily. Because it's lemon flavoured, no fishy burps.

Okay, so i sent my bf the link to that website and apparently hedoesn't have anything to do at work because he did a total cost analysis of Flameout, that brand of fish oils and the costco brand to find which one was best and that one apparently was not the best. Flameout is still the best with regards to what you get but costco was the most cost effective (but again you have to take like 20 pills a day).

i do like the liquid fish oils too. We get some at the Vitamin Shoppe when they have their buy one get one sale

Fish oil is disgusting and the good stuff is very expensive! Eat fish (salmon, albacore tuna, sardines, etc) at least twice a week and use cold pressed flax seed oil on salads (mix with a bit of lemon and balsamic vinegar) and ground flax seed in yogurt or mixed in with oatmeal...whatever, and you should be fine. I really don't think you need to shove 20 cod liver pills down your throat a day (I actually drank took a tbsp of the oil straight one day...holy yuck) is necessary, but some people do it.

I sprinkle flax seed in my yogurt or I hide it in everyday recipes. I also substitute ground flax for a lot of the fats I put in baking. Its a good way to sneak it in.

I was taking the one from costco but only one pill a day which clearly now isn't enough. There is no way I am taking 20 pills a day. I can barely handle the 6 I take now.

I use Ascenta Nutra Sea, 1 tsp a day. It's an Omega 3 with EPA and DHA and vitamin D.

Here is an article that explains a little about fish oils...hope it helps
