Healthy eating and going out to eat...??

Ok as many of you know we have a little competition going on in the road to getting fit thread...

But i wanted to start a thread to see if anyone had any suggestions with regards to eating healthy and going out to eat.

My BF and i rarely go out to eat (once a week we do sushi and that is pretty much it)...

But i work with a really close knit team and often times a bunch of us (or the whole team) will go out for lunch. I guess i don't want to feel left out but i still want to eat healthy and it can be hard because so many restaurants don't really offer anything that is really healthy for you.

How do y'all deal with situations like that??

^I *hate* dealing with that. I don't have any suggestions except that sometimes I pull out the "I just had a huge lunch", eat something healthy beforehand, and then just order soup or a plain salad.

Its difficult because even the salads at some of these places are worse than the burgers. You could look up the menu online (if its a national chain) and find nutrition info is on websites like CalorieKing. You can always bring your own salad dressing. The honey mustard chicken salad at Quiznos is 1110 cals and 74 grams of fat, and most of that comes from the dressing

Another thing they tell you at Weight Watchers is to eat a healthy snack beforehand so you are not tempted to eat the entire plate of food (most restaurants serve enough for 2 anyway) and eat the rest later.

^Yeah, I never order those crazy salads. If I'm going for safe, I order the garden salad (which is just veggies, though sometimes it's crappy iceberg) with dressing on the side.
Boring!
Since going back to being mostly veggie, it's even harder to find healthy stuff. Most vegetarian items at big chains are all carby fatty gross.

I guess I'm no help because when I go out I try to have what I want and just enjoy myself. It's so good just to take a break from the eat clean lifestyle for once. If I go to a restaurant that offers steak, I'll normally just get that with either sweet potato or mash potatoes. Now I'm hungry, lol.

I try to look up the calorie count on the website if available. Using sparkpeople helps and lets me know which meal I can *indulge* in a little bit.

^^^ keep in mind some restaurants nutrition facts are off .... they just found that out w/ chilis .. they were grossly underestimating...

also there is the factor of human error .. no dish can be prepared the exact same each time

usually i look for something that is grilled ( in no sauce) and get it with steamed veggies and make sure they don't put any sauces or anything on it

I'll ask for a doggy bag right off the bat and put half of whatever I get in there...so I get more for my money anyway and can have the leftovers the following day

Me too - I am horrible about this. I try not to eat fast food, so when I get to go somewhere like P.F. Chang's I'm going to order what I want.

There is actually MORE fat/cals in Chili's than what they advertise on their menu?! Didn't think their stuff could get much worse...

Here are my rules...which I don't always stick to but they seem to work:
1)no cheese, mayo or high calorie/fat dressing.
2) Remember that anything on the menu with fried chicken tenders or something can also be made with grilled chicken.
3) Two side salads= big entre salad! With low fat/cal dressing on the side of course.
4) Water! No soda, not even diet.
5) Ask for some type of veggie side instead of fries...most places have steamed veggies of some type.

Waiters probably think I'm a pain in the ass, but I don't really care

It depends what type of restaurant I dine at, but my general rules are usually:

1) Drink only water or tea. No pop - not even juice.
2) Have salad dressing or sauces served on the side if possible.
3) Try not to order anything deep fried - i.e., for carbs, subsitite baked potato (without the works) or rice in place of fries.
4) Try not to order cream-based items, like alfredo or cream of mushroom soup (if you're super conscious that day).
5) Have either an appetizer or dessert, not both, or none is ok too (share if possible!).
6) If you're having a late dinner, order chicken or fish instead of steak! I find those "salad-meals" are generally not any healthier anyway.

Can't think of the rest but yeah I try not to eat out too often. Food courts are so painful for me b/c it's all burgers/fried chicken/gourmet fries of some sort.

Linds,

When faced in this situation, lunch with the Judge, boss or whatever, i generally order something grilled chicken or turkey. Sandwich or salad, etc, dressing on the side. Water.

I then purposefully move the food around the plate and only allow myself to eat 1/4 or 1/2 of the "clean" stuff.

Crap, even when I try to eat healthy, it never happens.

Today, I went to one of those buffet-type places to get lunch and I convinced myself that I would eat healthy today. i got some rice, steamed broccoli, whitefish, asparagus and avocados. I'm just eating it now and realize that absolutely everything has been drenched in butter Boo

I try to avoid bread (I am wheat-intolerant), drink water, and look for grilled lean cuts of meat. I usually look for vegetables but ask if they are drenched in butter/oil and ask for fatty additives to be omitted. If I do splurge on something like a slice of pizza, I will eat salad with it to get my fiber.
