That is a good question Jenn and it is pretty much what Geebs said, if you are trying to build muscle (and in turn loose body fat) then eating high amounts of protein is important.
I guess shakes are also convenient if you have a busy lifestyle. I don't do whey protein or any milk proteins. I usually have pea protein (vegan pea protein...works really well!) in the morning because it is a quick and easy way to get my protein. But i really only do one shake in the AM and i will have a post workout shake that contains protein but also contains a fast digesting carb (waxy maize) to replenish. Again the main reason why i do this is because it is fast and easy. I just put the powder in a glass jar that i take with me to the gym, add water, shake it up and drink.
