If you can't beat them, join them. The fact is, Dan Gilbert (owner of the Cavaliers) thought he could pay Lebron in nostalgia and hope he stays in Ohio, but he was wrong. Lebron wants to win and the Cavaliers have done very little in the last few season in getting a supporting cast around James. You take Lebron out of Cleveland and they'll be lucky to win 25 games. Thats how little talent they have.
Its funny how people criticize athletes who demand big money and when Lebron decides to take less money to goto a team and win a title, he gets criticized for that as well. I'm not sure what the tax rate is in Florida compared to Ohio, but James left about $30M on the table to goto Miami. He'll be making $14,000,000 in his first season with the Heat, but could be making $20,000,0000 and that total would increase over the next 5 years.
What I didn't like was the stupid 1 hour special on ESPN to make the announcement. Also, the fact that a "friend" has more power than his agent. It was reported that his "posse" had plenty of influence over the decision, since they get carte blanche to the city where he plays and there isn't a better night life around than Miami beach.
In 1997, Kevin Garnett ruined the league by signing his 6 years and $126,000,000 which was unheard of at that time. Then he complained why the Timberwovles weren't winning. Well, when you make nearly half of the cap allowed, chances are, the talent around isn't going to be too sexy. Its not like Garnett needed that money either. He already had an $80,000,000 endorsement contract with Nike (Lebron's deal with Nike is $90,000,000). NBA players are more into competing on who makes the most money rather than who wins the most games. Inner city youths that become instant millionaires overnight with a posse of money-grubbing friends that follow them around like puppy dogs. Thats what sports has become. From the money hungry executives of the league more worried about how many commercials they can put in during a televised game, than the game itself to the self-indulgent millionaire players..the NBA has become a joke, but its entertaining as hell.
