The "New" Jersey Shore

I read this article today and have no idea what to think! I grew up in a heavily dominated (sterotyped) Persian/Jewish area, including the surrounding towns.

Opinions?

'Jersey Shore' producers looking for Persians | APP.com | Asbury Park Press

Text below for clicky-phobic:

<!--Saxotech Paragraph Count: 2
-->NEW YORK The production company behind "The Jersey Shore'' is looking for Persian-Americans. 495 Productions and Doron Ofir Casting have announced that they're casting a "Persian version'' of the MTV hit reality show about young Italian-Americans partying at the beach.
The casting call, which Gawker.com first reported, seeks applicants who are 21 or older, "appear younger than 30 and are outrageous, outspoken and a proud Persian-American.''

A spokesman for 495 Productions didn't reply to questions about whether the show had any TV network deal.

"The Jersey Shore'' is in production for a second season. Numerous attempts have been undertaken to mimic it, including a Russian-American version set in Brooklyn's Brighton Beach that doesn't yet have distribution.

I've heard about the Brooklyn show (I live there). I think all these shows directed towards a particular ethnicity is entertaining, but it conveys the wrong message about people. The possibility of these shows fueling stereotypes turns me off. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

This could start to get problematic. Jersey Shore mostly worked because it was about "guido culture," which isn't these days necessarily limited to those of Italian descent (as we learned later, since some of the cast members weren't even of Italian heritage.) The Persian version is very specifically singling out an ethnic group, which has more obviously negative implications.

Well, whatever it is they choose to do I hope the people are not orange. What is up with so many people from Jersey being orange? I have noticed this even before this show started. I'm not saying all people from Jersey, but there are a shitload of them. They just started a new show about a salon in NJ and almost all of the women are orange too.

lol wut

I have a student from the jersey shore and she swears up and down that there are really a lot of people like that there (the actual jersey shore show)

If they want to find Persians for their show, Michigan has tons of Chaldeans (Persian Catholics/Christians) the ones I know are "good guy" types though, definitely not exciting enough for the show

I think it is hilarious to make fun of anyone that is "Proud" of their heritage. You would think it was an accomplishment.

The difference is, none of those shows explicitly advertise those shows as basically "Crazy White People Doing Stuff." It's just "Crazy People Doing Stuff." No one looks at those shows and judges white people because of the characters on the show - they just look at the individuals and call them trash.

When you're casting a specific ethnicity and people that "proudly" display it, it's a lot easier to hold those people up as an example of that entire group. JS was on the border because it was "Guidos Doing Stuff," but they explained it away by saying that "guido" no longer just refers to Italian-Americans.

Mandoir, I agree with you to an extent. But in areas where the population is overwhelmingly black/latino/some other ethnicity and those people don't get a lot of interaction with whites, they actually DO stereotype them based on what they see on tv. Believe me, I've heard it. North Charleston is over 60% black and many neighborhoods, elementary, and even high schools are almost exclusively black here. And yes, they do look at the shows on MTV and think all white people are like that because they don't get much actual interaction with white people. Same as white people do with other ethnicities. Therefore, I respectfully disagree with your first point.

I get a little bit queasy defending this god awful state, but very few people actually look like this outside of the shore and a lot of the shore guidos/guidettes aren't actually from NJ

^ I agree, my husband grew up in NJ and we lived there for 6 years before moving to PA. I have never seen an orange person I still only shop in NJ and I'm in NJ more than I am in PA. I go to the shore a lot in the summer and there are a few of these types of people but actually not many at all. There are a ton of very well educated, high class and beautiful people that live in NJ.

^^I never said there were not well educated, good people there. I have been there a few times, but really only to Atlantic City. I saw a lot of orange people there and they come down here on vacation too. I'm just trying to figure out the whole orange fake tan thing. Its totally overdone when one or two applications would look good. Maybe its just the people that I see. These Jersey shows aren't helping much either lol.

^Oh I know you never said there weren't well educated people in NJ. I'm just trying to reiterate that most people in NJ are nothing like the people on that show. I don't know what the orange deal is. I've really never seen an orange person before

^^You have never seen a person with a terrible fake spray on tan? I see them a lot. They just over do it a bit and look like the cast of Jersey Shore.

No not really. Have you been to Vegas and seen Nevada women wearing body glitter all over the place? Most of the time only strippers or teens wear body glitter. I live in an area where there is a huge population of people from NJ that get tired of it (paying taxes) and move down here. A lot of them are orange and I know they are not all from Atlantic City. Many of them over do their fake tans down here as well, kind of like so many of the locals are red from being in the sun over the years. As I have already stated that I know that all of the people from NJ are not orange. Perhaps we are just being over taken by these types that love the beach.
