Duggar baby No. 19 arrives early - Parenting & Family

Quote:
Make that “19 Kids and Counting” — but not before something of a scare due to an emergency C-section and a very premature birth.

Michelle Duggar, America’s most famous supermom and star of the TLC reality series “18 Kids and Counting” (which is due for a title change), gave birth to her 19th child Thursday evening.

The infant wasn’t due until March 18, but after Michelle Duggar seemingly recovered from a weekend attack of gallstones, she was rushed into an emergency C-section Thursday at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

Josie Brooklyn Duggar checked in at 6:27 p.m. She weighed 1 pound, 6 ounces and was reported to be resting in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit. A family spokesman told People magazine that the infant was expected to be fine.

“The most important thing right now is for mom and baby Josie to get as much rest as possible,” a TLC spokesman said in a statement issued to People. “The family is grateful for all the prayers and well-wishes during their recovery.”

Hospital officials said Friday that Duggar had been diagnosed with preeclampsia, a life-threatening, pregnancy-related disease in which the mother's blood pressure can rise dangeriously high.

Grandchild 1, then child 19
The birth comes just two months after Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar became grandparents for the first time. On Oct. 9, their eldest son, Josh, and his wife, Anna, welcomed their first child, Mackynzie Renee.

The Duggars are devout Baptists and members of the Quiverfull movement, a Christian group that advocates having as many children as God gives them. They home-school all of their children and say that they live debt-free. They have always said that each child is a blessing and they would never try to avoid having more.

The family’s 18th member, Jordyn-Grace Makiya, was born just under a year ago, on Dec. 18, 2008. Josie Brooklyn is the ninth girl in the family, which also includes 10 boys.

In the Duggar family, younger children pair with older siblings in a buddy system, and the older girls help raise the infants.

After Michelle was hospitalized last weekend with the gallstone attack, she gave an interview to the Religion News Service. One of the questions she was asked was: “If you were ever advised not to have any more children for health reasons, would you consider some sort of family planning?”

“I don’t know,” she responded. “I’m not at that place. I guess we would just cross that bridge when we got there. If there was something that were life threatening for me, that would be a matter of prayer.”

There was no word from the family or the hospital what implications Josie’s premature birth might have for future pregnancies.

I hope the baby is okay.

This thread is going to get ugly. It always does when the Duggars are mentioned.

"In the Duggar family, younger children pair with older siblings in a buddy system," Uh no. They use the buddy system when they are out in public so no one gets lost.

they use the buddy system in their home as well. older siblings feed, bathe, and get younger siblings ready.

anyway, i didn't post this to debate the Duggars. i feel bad for any mother who delivers a premature baby (especially so very early), and all the emotions/worry that go along with that. i hope that there are no long-term/permanent complications with Josie.

Oh yah. I totally forgot about that. I guess I was more thinking like a regimented buddy system with assignments etc.

That is so crazy how premature her baby was. Our due dates were pretty close with hers being later and she delivered the baby like a month ago.

I hope Josie will be OK. Having a preemie is very scarey and stressful; especially so early and weighing so little. I wish them well

but... she already does have a life threatening pregnancy disease... does she not take this seriously?

It isn't a disease. It goes away after you have the baby. You don't have it all the time and just because you have it with one pregnancy doesn't mean you will have it with others. I could be wrong though.

correct. pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy disease and usually goes away within a day or two after baby is born.

however, her age puts her at higher risk of having pre-eclampsia again. usually, pre-eclampsia strikes in a first pregnancy and rarely repeats. in Michelle Duggar's case, i have a feeling it was a combination of the gall bladder attack and her age.

any time the body feels threatened during a pregnancy, the first thing it will do is try and get the baby out of danger, even if it means extremely early delivery.

my advice to her would be to stop.

I must say this doesn't surprise me at all. Something was bound to happen eventually. I hope little Josie is ok. I saw a commercial last night showing her having the baby and I thought to myself, isn't it early? I'm glad you posted this because I completely forgot about it until seeing this thread.

She also answered that question before she delivered this baby early due to pre-eclampsia

And gallstones which had to be removed. I am sure if the doctor told her to stop she would pray about it and probably stop. She wouldn't want to orphan her children.

I wonder how the baby is doing now. It's been over a month since she's been born but I couldn't find any recent updates.
