I agree Dian. In less than 2 weeks of being president, his name was submitted before the cutoff. At that time he was picking out a dog and Michelle was trying to decide on an interior decorator.

These were the nominees:
Quote:
Denis Mukwege, Medical doctor

Dr. Denis Mukwege jokes with patients outside the surgical ward of Panzi hospital in Bukavu, DRC. On this photo's date, Dr Mukwege had treated 21,000 women suffering from devastating gynecological injuries as a result of rape in Congo's brutal war. He is the only gynecologist treating these wounds in the country. Oct. 14, 2008

Seeing pregnant women arrive at the hospital on a donkey and dying during childbirth encouraged Mukwege to study gynaecology and obstetrics. Noticing that so many women had been sexually abused, he later founded the Panzi hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Hundreds of thousands of female sexual violence victims have been helped so far.
Quote:
Handicap International and Cluster Munition Coalition

An injured boy is tied on a bed after a bus he was in was hit by a mine. Nine women and seven children are among the 30 killed in the blast. The packed bus traveling from the western city of Herat to Kandahar, Afghanistan hit a land mine in Maiwand district Tuesday. Thirty-nine people were wounded.

These organizations are recognized for their consistently serious efforts to clean up cluster bombs, also known as land mines. Innocent civilians are regularly killed worldwide because the unseen bombs explode when stepped upon. Thirty-four nations are known to have air-dropped cluster bombs from the 1970s to the 1990s.

Mandela>Obama.

Quoted from friend:
"The committee "recognized Obama's efforts to solve complex global problems including working toward a world free of nuclear weapon."

The way I see it, is it was given to him a little prematurely, in hopes that it will aid those efforts in further negotiating peace treaties and provide assistance in a climate bill passing, as well as our health ... Read Morecare reform.

According to the committee, "only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future,"

Can I get my paycheck early in hopes that I get my job done?

As a Liberal and someone who would have voted for Obama, I think this is retarded.

Many of my Uber-Liberal friends feel the same way. They are just expecting more.

The only shred of goodness is that maybe this will give Obama some desire to make good on promises since people are expecting it so much. Just a random thought.

I agree its more in hopes of what they want him to do rather than what he has accomplished so far.

The story of the doctor in the Congo is amazing

The reaction to the news that President Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize really surprises me. Since when do people care so much about who wins the award? Can anyone here name last year's winner without looking it up? How about the year before that? Can anyone name any of the winners in the last 10 years?

Probably not.

Clearly the selection committee is making a statement here. Obama's vision of a world free of nuclear weapons is an important one. Obama's stance on dealing with global warming is the correct one. Obama's pledge to restore America's standing in the world is something worth noting.

I promise you one thing. 10 years from now people will remember that President Obama won the award whether the president accomplishes any of his stated goals or not. If he succeeds I truly believe the world will be a better place. And if he fails? At least the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to a man who had a vision and was committed to making the world a better place.

I have good intentions too. Can I have a million dollars, that is the prize money right?

On another note I guess I just feel that presidents are supposed to do what he is getting the award for. I don't like giving an award for things you are supposed to do. If I am making any sense at all.

I think that basically anyone who wins the Nobel Prize gives the money to charity.

ETA: I still don't think he was the right choice, and when I read the news, I wondered if my sense of time had become so disoriented from not working that I forgot about April Fool's. I'm an Obama fan for sure, but I don't think this was a good choice.

ETA: I thought we were discussing the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the president of the United States, not a re-run of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire".

from what i have gathered - the nomination deadline was february 1st, at which point he was in office for two weeks.

criteria for award according to the deceased Alfred Nobel: "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

^These

Rememberme?-The awards are historically based on ACTIONS that were already accomplished by the winners. When I think of someone who has won an award as important as this, I think they have REALLY DONE something important, like Mother Teresa or The Red Cross...Now I think of it as a popularity contest

Thank you Rob for your comment

Exactly, "shall have done", not "might do during their 4-year term".

Alfred is rolling over in his grave as we speak.

It's statements like these that make the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to an American president who is committed to a nuclear-free world all the more important.
