| | | Anything full body at a high intensity.
ETA: If you use the handrails, that reduces the calories you burn significantly. I'd avoid the stairmaster just because everyone cheats on that and it's hard to avoid. Ellipticals with moving arms are better than ones with just handrails. If your elliptical does have handrails, don't use them. Swing your arms with your pace.
Regular stationary biking is not super high in cals but spinning is pretty good because you work at a higher intensity than you normally would otherwise.
If you can run, I'd recommend that though. I get to my lowest weights with running.

| | | in my experience with calorie counters on cardio machines
i would say the elliptical (you should actively be using your arms too though, not just your legs)
but who knows how accurate those counters are

| | Biking or cycling is excellent.. on hills even better.
Hiking at a good pace on an incline is also excellent.
The weather is finally turning nice to do these things

The weather is finally turning nice to do these things | How much biking a day would you consider to be good in terms of exercise/calorie burning. Just wondering because I bike about 30 minutes a day, just from biking to school and back since I live off-campus, but I'm not sure if that actually counts as full exercise, though there are some slight uphills one direction. What would you suggest adding to this for a daily workout? |

ideally, everyone is supposed to get 30 minutes of cardio every day
but in reality.. how many people actually do that? lol
biking is an excellent addition to any workout regime
however, biking only targets the lower body, so although it may be good for your heart and your butt ( ) you would also want to include exercises that engage your upper body

| | | as long as you can get and keep your heart rate at an elevated level for 20 min...that's good enough. but i am set on the eliptical...for in the gym. if you are going to get on the treadmill..i would elevate the angle to increase the calorie burn. don't forget to eat super clean...that and any cardio will result in fat loss.

Sweating because it's hot doesn't mean you're burning tons of calories. It means it's hot and humid.
Ellipticals are notorious for overstating the calories you burn btw. I firmly believe that you will burn more running than on the elliptical even if the elliptical says you burn more.
The outside exercise that is proven to burn the most is cross-country skiing. |

| | | don't forget that you continue to burn at a faster rate long after you quit whatever exercise you do. plus if you have time...maybe on the weekends, do one session in the morning and one mid afternoon or evening. i usually will do my cardio in the morning and weight routine in the evening.

Is rollerblading good for burning a lot of calories?
I am not partial to using cardio machines at the gym but i find that i LOVE to walk/run outside. Sadly though, i live on the praries so finding a nice incline to hike up is nearly impossible.
But...if you live near a beach it is always good to try and run on the sand!

Linds, rollerblading is good for burning calories if you work at a high intensity. It has the possibility of letting you coast a bit but as long as you don't do that and push forward, it will burn a lot of calories. As with everything, it depends on how hard you work. |

As with everything, it depends on how hard you work. | I tend to try and rollerblade quite fast and i make sure that i am pushing as much as i can. I have a pretty crappy pair of blades right now and i have been wanting to get a new pair forever. So this year i decided that i am going to look into some 5 wheel blades seeing as how i would like to be able to go a bit faster and possibly try racing...
For me blading isn't about relaxing but it is about speed.

Me on the other hand... I tried rollerblading earlier this year and it was disastrous. It consisted of me gliding down little street hills and using momentum to get up hills, and then hoping to slow down enough that it wouldn't hurt when I crashed into poles to stop. (And I'm seriously not kidding.) |

I know I can run for MUCH longer on a treadmill than I can outside on the street.
Best cardio exercise IMO is freestyle swimming.
I would never trust gym calorie counters. I've read that they are consistently way off. Just running on a treadmill burns calories but interval running will burn a LOT more as well as get you into better cardio shape overall. Variations of power walking with high inclines, jogging and sprinting will really give you a great workout.

| | | ^google up MET, which are a bit more accurate that the calorie counters.
also when on a treadmill set it to a 1% incline and it will be similiar to running outside.
