Ew! Attack of the 1,000 Calorie restaurant dishes!

I read this article and just about died- I love the Monterey Chicken at Chilis! I mean, yeah I didn't think it was exactly healthy food but over 1100 calories and 71g of fat! Holy crap! And that's not even counting the sides that come with it! I could seriously have like three big macs instead!

Attack of the 1,000-Calorie Entrees! - Hungry Girl on Yahoo! Food

I am SO in favor of restaurants putting nutritional information on their menus. I would really like to be more informed about what I'm eating. But then again, maybe I would just be so turned off I would never go out anymore! It definitely makes you think twice though.

I don't think nutritional information is really needed. If you about know how many calories approximately the different foods have, and you usually taste and feel how much fat is in there, you don't need it in writing IMO.
You can inform yourself pretty easily by thinking a little and reading a little about food. I seriously doubt that you'll have so much fun anymore then.

I do agree that restaraunts should out down nutritional info.

I am pretty good at figuring out the caloric and nutritional contenct of basic foods...but you never know what they are using to cook these foods and what is in the sauces etc. It would just make life that much easier on a lot of people, especilly those who need to watch certain things like sodium and sugar intake for medical reasons. It can get really annoying having to ask your server about everything and you do not want a medical problem to keep you from going out and enjoying yourself.

On another note...i think restaraunts should offer whole wheat or regular pastas instead of just regular pasta and brown rice and regular rice. I can honestly say that if i found a restaurant that did that i would be a patron often.

I could not agree more. I remember reading a story a while back about a McDonalds having to shut down because the local population did eat junk food. I think it was in AZ. Anyway, if I had more options such as brown rice and wheat or spinach pasta I would eat out more often too.

I would like to open a place that serves good healthy food but I would be SOL where I live. My husband and I were coming back from a trip last weekend and we had to eat at a cracker barrel. I could not help but notice that many of the people in there were huge. Some were so heavy that they needed canes to help get around.

I don't know how anyone eats the entire portion of any of this stuff. I can never manage to leave a restaurant without a doggie bag.

Like the dinner portion of anything from PF Changs (as noted in the article). Dear lord!!! That's a TON of food!

I would love to do the same. I am lucky to live in an area that has a lot of farmland and there are quite a few organic healthy restaruants where i live, but they are usually gourmet places that i LOVE going to but it costs and arm and five legs for dinner.

I am a very busy person with school and work and i have to admit that going out to eat after a night class is a lot easier then going home and cooking. I have considered opening a fast food type place that serves healthy foods on the go or even a restaurant like Applebea's or Ruby Tuesdays that has healthy affordable options.

Many restaurants do, you just have to ask. For example Olive Garden and Bravo! Italian restaurants will substitue whole wheat pasta.

I think lately there has been more restaurants offering healthier meals with nutrition info listed. The problem is, I am pretty picky and quite often don't like what's on the "healthy" menu. So I get the regular meal, and I usually only eat half of the portion and take the rest home.

That is absolutely frightening

I'll stay home and cook myself, thanks. That way I know what's going into my entree!

I wish they would post this stuff on the menu at Applebees and Chilis like they do at McDonalds. I didn't think the Chili's Monteray chicken was nearly that bad Another good reason to make your own food so you can check calories on all ingredients.

I went to Applebees last night and ordered a salad that I thought that would not be to unhealthy. The salad dressing was loaded with sugar and bacon greese. Had they said in the menu that it had sugar I would not have ordered it.

^^what bothers me most is all of these salads that they try to advertise as being a healthy alternative, but a lot of them have more fat/cals than a burger and fries. Its hard for me to guesstimate how bad all of these sauces/dressings are and since I like lots of dressing on my salad I am best just making my own w/ Kraft FREE or something I know is low fat/cal.

^bring your own dressing to a restaurant. It's kinda cheesy, but that way you know what you are getting.

I don't worry about fat as much as I do sugar. The worst thing is high fructose corn syrup and it is in everything! You will even find it in whole wheat bread which is supposed to be good for you.

I have followed many diets over the years but always go back to Atkins as it is the only one that has worked for me. I do not however eat all the high fat meats and instead use chicken or shrimp. Most of the carbs I get are through vegetables and wheat bread.

Yes an Applebees salad should be good for you but when they load the dressing with sugar/grease and then bring white bread out to top it all off it just does not work. I wanted to send it back but was afraid they would spit in my food. I never send anything back.

I'm oriented a little towards "The China Study" and "Eat to Live". I eat salads mostly without any dressing, or have them bring it seperately and sprinkle a little on it myself.

I would not mind at all if restaurants provided nutritional information. That is the first thing I look at when I go grocery shopping. I hardly ever eat fast food, but if I do, I insist in checking out the nutritional information before ordering anything. If I go out for steak, I'd do my research and compare which cuts are more lean.

And as some have mentioned, the sauces restaurants used for cooking is often the culprit!!

I think my bf is annoyed at me sometimes b/c there's so many restaurants I wouldn't go to, and all I ever want to eat is sushi

I always get the dressing on the side. I just dip my fork in it first, that way I don't get globs of dressing on everything.

That's what I do too! You end up using much less dressing than if you poured it over your salad.

wow, i knew that salads could be fattening, but never saw the numbers. i can see where someone might get the impression of a salad from say chili's not being too bad, but you can't seriously get one from mcdonalds or hardies and think you are getting a healthy, low-fat lunch!! did i misspell hardies? oh well.
