Does anyone do yoga?

I used to go to a class once a week, and I loved it. Are there any good videos that I could use at my dorm? Is there a special kind of mat I should get? I want to start doing this daily if possible. Any suggestions are appreciated!

I LOVE yoga! I was doing it a few times a week at a place near my house. I started with the light and gentle class and I fell in LOVE with it. They even give you this mini massage at the end with lavender and peppermint oil. . . It is the best ever. Anyways, now i mix it up with light and gentle and level one. I dont have any suggestions on videos but I would get a nice and grippy mat so you will not slide around. Also, i perfer a little thicker mat so that my knees dont hurt when I have to sit on them.
As for something daily, I know that there is a fluid routine where you do things like the downward dog, the back curl, the warrior, and things like that all with out stopping and in a fluid motion. You could maybe learn that and try.
Sorry, I am not very helpful but I thought i would share!

I go to an actual class twice a week so I don't have any video recommendations ^^

As for mats, I get the 1/4 inch thick ones. Normal ones seem to be too thin for me.

YES i love yoga
i do both yoga and pilates

i thought that the yoga/pilates for dummies dvds were SO great when i started

as for mats
you might want to think about getting a thicker one?
if you ever want to move into pilates

because at first i only did yoga, so i bought a 3/16 inch mat
afterwards i started doing pilates as well so i needed to get a thicker mat, and i went out and bought another which is waaay thicker
now my pilates mat doubles as my yoga mat too.. and since you do it at home you don't really have to worry about lugging around a heavier mat

anyway that was a mouthful
hope you have fun! it's awesome

I'm a firm believer in Ashtanga Yoga since I like the physical challenge. It's so amazingly good for your body, I feel revitalized when I'm done. It makes my body supple and strong. I wish everyone would pratice yoga, the world would be a better place! Cheezy I know, but that's how strong my beliefs are.

Hi,
I don't post here often but I can't resist a yoga thread! I try to go to class 2x per week but I o/w do it at home. I prefer "flow" or vinyasa style, and I have gotten up to intermediate level.

What I would recommend b/c I don't know your level, is instructors whom I've liked. I like Rodney Yee, Shiva Rea, and I think Baron Baptiste is good as well. I'm not a big fan of Bryan Kest and I don't usually like "celebrity" workouts. You can check any of those instructors out on amazon.com--just type their names in and you'll get a list of their DVD offerings, mostly from beginner to advanced.

I really like Rodney Yee's DVD called Power Yoga, Total Body or something like that. It's 3 different workouts--you can do them separately or all together for a long workout. I love Shiva Rea's "Yoga Shakti"--there is this feature called the Yoga Matrix where you can put together your own workout--a different one each time, so you don't get bored. That one I use the most. That one is intermediate to intermediate/adv but you can modify it to your level. She tells you how.

I am getting into Ashtanga Yoga and have been using David Swensen's DVDs--I have the First Series, the Second Series, and Short Forms. Short Forms is nice b/c like Rodney Yee's, it's 3 different workouts--one that is 15 min. for those days when you're not feeling great or don't have time, one 30 min., and one 45 min. I also have Beryl Bender's ashtanga yoga DVD, I don't know the name but it's a full 1hr and 30 min. workout and it's HARD.

I have a 1/4in. thick mat too and it makes a huge diff. I also got Yogitoes yoga mat b/c I sweat a ton and that one is thin, but works really well. It goes on top of your mat to absorb your sweat. Machine washable and thin so you can pack it and stuff it in your yoga bag.

Hope that helps! I too wish everyone would do yoga! It's so good for your body and helps you relax. I always feel like I've had a good massage after I do yoga.

Oh wow, thanks! I am sick with the flu, so I have been in bed the last four days. I just checked back to find all this great advice!

As far as experience, I wouldn't really say I have any at all even though I went to that class before. It was kind of simple and it has been over a year since I went. Anything in the beginner range is probably good for me for now. I can't wait until I get better, so I can find some of these videos and try them out!
