Birth Control Options

I found an article that has info on birth control options which inclue IUDs (including the Copper IUD and Mirena), Nuvaring, and Ortho Evra. Just thought I would share.

glow | Best birth control options for you

Keep in mind that the prices stated are all in CAD.

It would be nice if those of you that have tried any of these can post your experience.

I love my Mirena. I have no side effects whatsoever. I never gave birth, and had it inserted under a general anesthetic.

That's good to hear. I've been doing some research on it because I'm interested in getting it. However, I read that some people had issues with migraines and I am a bit hesitant about that since I get migraines already. I don't want to spend the money and then have to take it out within a short amount of time. I would be paying for it out of pocket since I don't have any insurance at the moment.

Insurance doesn't cover it here anyway.
As far as the migraines are concerned, I'd definitely research more on that issue before getting the Mirena.

I really really really want and IUD, but the doctors I have wont giv eit to me because it can make it very difficult to conceive and they think at 21 I am not capable of deciding wether or not if I want kids.

it pisses me off because I have NEVER wanted kids. even when I was little bitty and kids would play house - I wouldn't play. When I played with my barbies and dolls we never did the kids thing, my baby dolls were projectiles more than anything. I DO NOT WANT KIDS. I know I do not want kids. Doctors have no right to make that decision for you.

i hated depo when i used it. i gained weight and lost all my sex drive. i also had constant spotting.

i liked the nuvaring the most. it never fell out for me and i had virtually no bad symptoms.

I agree with you 110% - i feel EXACTLY the same way and i find it somewhat insulting that your doctors won't give it to you b/c of the possible risk that it may be more difficult to conceive later on. It just goes back to the stereotype that ALL women should want kids. Anyway, according to the Minerva website there should be no difficulty conceiving after it is taken out.
IUD is the #1 used birth control method in the world and there are tons of women your age who use it. Any way you can get a second opinion from a different doctor?
I am also worried about the birth control/migraine thing...the research I've done says that hormonal birth control usually makes menstural migraines (what I have) a lot worse.

Keri, you shoud show this to your doctor (taken from website posted above):
One of the biggest myths concerning IUDs is that they cause infertility. Not so, says Greenwald. “The IUD itself doesn’t cause infertility, but if you get an STI with an IUD in your uterus, it’s more likely to cause scarring, which can lead to fertility problems,” she says. “And if you do get pregnant with an IUD, you’re at higher risk of having a tubal or ectopic pregnancy.”

I used the patch when it first came out and had a lot of trouble with it. For the last 1 1/2 years I've been using the Nuvaring and I love it. I only have to think about it once a month and I've had no known side effects--maybe a loss in libido, but other meds I'm on may also be the cause.

My doctor said that it might take longer to get pregnant after using an IUD but that it's not responsibile for infertility. FWIW.

Anybody know what I can do w/ those 3? ya can't sell them on Ebay for some reason - but they're brand new, nothing wrong!! I hate to throw them away

^^just like fake jeans, there is fake medicine out there and people should go to the doctor anyway before getting on any prescription so i see why its not allowable on ebay. how long are they good for? could you use them after you had your first child?

Nuvarings are only good for one year after they are prescribed. I think they keep them refridgerated or something. I also have extra birth control pill packs, I think a Yasmin one and some Ortho Tri-cyclen and Ortho Cyclen. I can't think of any of my friends that use either so I will eventually throw them out when they expire.

yeah, they won't last more than a year...they come to me "on ice", but the pharmicist said it's OK to keep them room temp, it just gives them a shorter shelf life. But, i keep them in the fridge just in case!!!

Personally I'd give them to a friend who has had a doctor's ok to take it. I think it's illegal but as long as they have a doctor's ok, I'd still do it personally.
