Need energy

I have made a new years resolution to myself to be more active, which isn't that hard for me to do but...i have been finding that i do not feel energized anymore. I get up in the AM to go to the gym before work and i find that i am exhausted and can't get through my workout without feeling unmotivated and tired. I have also been sick for the past week and a half with a bad cold and a respiratory virus that has me coughing like crazy, which could explain why i feel tired during my workout.

I am starting right now with the goal of being in excellent shape by the summer to start speed rollerblading (something i have wanted to do for a long time) and i find that the winter cold is really taking its toll on me as well. I was planning on going snowshoeing and skiing this year but it is about -43 degrees celcius where i live (seriously, within one minute any exposed skin can freeze, so i opt to stay out of it) and my winter fitness plans now have to wait for when it gets warmer.

Does anyone have any advice for added energy and ways to feel less fatigued during my workout? I have been getting around 7-8 hours of sleep at night (most nights) and i am eating 5-6 small meals a day that are high in protien and fiber as well.

Maybe you should try something like the 1 a day vitamins that add something for energy. Just a thought. Also, those energy drinks (red bull, no fear, rockstar) give a lot of energy too. That may be the little boost you need to get yourself to work out. Hopefully, you won't need it anymore after you get into the routine of working out all the time.

I am having problems getting motivated about working out too! I have been really good about my eating but now I need to exercise. I don't even know when the last time I was at the gym.

The obvious - Linds, if you're sick, you shouldn't be exercising. If you have cold symptoms below the neck, you should be resting. You'll just stay sick and tired if you try to push through it. Anything artificial for energy will just make it worse. I know the urge though but it's so not worth it.

Ok you definitely should NOT be doing any exercise if you are ill! It will just take you longer to get well again! Seriously you need to rest and look after yourself until you get rid of your cold.
You may find that your energy levels are much improved when you are 100% well again. Its good that you are eating enough protein, also try to reduce refined carbs such as white bread, biscuits etc. And also reduce alcohol or only drink on days you dont workout. You may find an energy/sports drink taken before & during your wokout will help too

Did you just start working out regularly? I always find that when I start a workout program, I am fine for 2-3 weeks, and then I always start feeling really fatigued for a about a week and a half after that. It's awful when I occurs but I stick to the program and then it seems like my body gets used to it and I feel fine and have enough energy again. Just a thought...and like everyone else said, don't excersize if you are really sick!

if you work out and just need a little energy, i take some green tea extract about 20 minutes before my workout with 8 oz of water. Also, make sure you have at least a little something in your stomach when you go. if nothing else, get a small bowl of oatmeal.
