opinions on sauna's/jacuzzi's

Okay, I have a jacuzzi tub. I use it filled with HOT water. When I finally get out (normally after 90-120 mins) I am bright red and not at all pruney. But I do tend to feel lightheaded and can hear my pulse in my ears AFTER I am out.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows if this is okay on a non regular basis (once a month or so).

The same thing has happened to me a few times, I passed out once too. Maybe if you lower the temperature of the water or stay in for less time you won't get the side effects?

Sort of on this topic, Mark Vestergan director of strength training for the NFL, recommends hot/cold showers after a workout, and in general as a part of active recovery. I've heard of other trainers doing this, basically to get the blood moving, so ie jump in the snow for a bit, hot tub for a bit . . . so I don't know if that long is healthy but if you were to run out take a cold shower and then get back in a few times, that'd be good for ya

Thanks, that is actually what I carave is cold water, and I keep a rag in the sink filled iwth cold water just to put on my forehead. I stay in for a long time because of either sore muscles, or I sometimes have issues with arthritis in my wrists and ankles, and it really helps. Normally I do about a 30 min stint in there on regular, but this last time I freaked myself out a little.

maybe you shouldn't spend so much time in the tub. will likely get similar effect by just staying in for 1/2 - 1/3 the time?

The reason you feel lightheaded is because the heat is putting you in a state of hyperthermia. To cool itself, the body opens up arterioles and redirects blood flow to the skin, which is why you're seeing your skin become "bright red". Because of the vascular system opening up, blood pressure drops and the heart tries to keep up by beating faster.

I would find out what the recommended maximum temperature setting for a jacuzzi/hot tub is and be careful not to go past that. Also, get out if you feel lightheaded or your heart racing. There's no long term effects, it's just passing out or getting dehydrated (because you are sweating) that you should be careful of.

ohh I see. I blow up a tube and lay out in mine, it's awesome. I usually fall asleep for about 45 minutes before I wake myself up, but I don't sunburn EVER so it's not a problem.

Hi Keri,

Another reason for the lightheadedness could also be that taking a hot bath for that long actually begins to melt the accumulated waste in your body, realeasing stored toxins into your bloodstream. This is a VERY good thing if you follow the hot bath with cold water on your *ahem* , nether regions, for about 15 minutes. This draws the waste to the intestines and colon where it can be eliminated. It's called the sitz bath (and not the one hospitals give you after you have a baby, the original sitz bath)

This is one of the oldest recorded health remedies! It is a lifesave when you are sick, cold, fever, flu, etc. but as a general body cleansing routine, it's really easy and incredibly good for you.

The benefits of the sits bath are as follows, INCREDIBLE skin, weight loss, reduced headaches, joint pain, and general body aches and the bonus.....heightened sexual activity as it stimulates the nerves in the genital regions. There are many other benefits, it's better if you read about them for yourself.

Here is a link about the sitz bath, it's origin and how to do one properly.

You should also consider Horsetail grass tea for the oesteoporsis. It contains silica, which enables the absorbtion of calcium into the body for use in building tissues. It's sweet and is one of the better tasting herb teas. Otherwise, the excess calcium will be stored in your joints and cause stiffness and maybe arthrituis later in life.
