| | | Anyone quit smoking and not gain weight? I quit for about 10 months and gained about 15 lbs. I have just finally lost that weight almost 1.5 yrs after starting smoking again. I would like to quit smoking again, but really don't want to put that weight back on (especially after just buying 3 pairs of jeans!) Everyone I know who has quit has gained weight. Is there any hope? |

| | | I didn't gain, the key is sugar free hard candy & gum. I personally like the sugar freee creme savers and the citrus trident. I was either chewing gum, sucking on those candies, or both while knitting if I wasn't doing other things to keep me from smoking. I always smoked outside, and that was my me time, 10 mins on the porch with my nicotine, I sttarted taking my knitting out there or a book or something else to do outside on the porch to get rid of that trigger.

| | Thanks, it feels good to know it can be done. I did the sugar free gum a lot last time. Creme savers sounds really good too. I didn't know they made those in sugar free. I'm planning to quit first of the year, so we'll see how it goes. It's not really a new year's resolution because I don't think anyone ever sticks with those. It's just that I know I'll be drinking New Year's Eve, and that always a big trigger with me |

| | I didn't gain weight after I quit. But like Jenn I didn't change my eating habits.
And quite frankly....even if you do put on weight, get it over and done with
and then lose the weight after you are completely smoke-free! I don't want
to sound preachy but you can definitively get your figure back whereas
your health is more difficult to regain. It's more important than 1000 jeans. |

| | i just saw an ad for nicorette that said many women don't like to quit for fear of gaining weight, but supposedly if you use it you won't gain weight (maybe the sugar free gum thing) i've seen sugar free creme savers btw. i agree, your health is more important even if you gain a few lbs |

| | | Yes, I totally agree that health is more important. I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed that I won't gain any. I plan to join a gym and continue to watch what I eat. I used to be one of those girls who could eat whatever I wanted and never gain a pound, and I was super thin. Until I had kids, which just changed everything for me. |

| | Don't feel bad if you gain weight. It's natural. I read that smoking increases your metabolism, so when you quit, your metabolism goes back to what it was before and that's why you gain weight. As someone said, your health is way more important. |

I'm doing about 50 minutes of cardio, including jogging 4km, 3 times a week. I started at the gym about 2 months before i quit to get ready. My weight has gone up about 5lbs already and i don't know what else i can try lol.
I don't want to start smoking again but if anyone has any ideas, please lmk, if this keeps up all my jeans will be for sale in the next two weeks.

| | I have now been smoke free for 12 days
I have not found that my appetite has changed at all, but I guess everyone is different. I have increased my fitness by going to the gym more & running & light weight training. This wasnt for weight reasons- more to do with the fact that the last thing I want to do when I come out of the gym is light up lol!
Keeping fit is a great distraction & the 'feel good' factor with the adrenaline etc means you just dont want to smoke for a few hours after.
Lou- I dont know why you are putting on weight when you are doing so much cardio, unless you are eating more cals? Do you find you are snacking at times where before you would have had a cig? Like having coffee & a biscuit instead of coffee & a cig? Be careful what you snack on- try those little 'fun sized' bags of fruit & nuts for when you are hungry. Also try drinking fruit teas as sometimes people feel hungry when they are actually dehydrated. I woulnt advise chewing gum much, as this can give you stomach cramps & also make you feel hungry. Keep up the good work at the gym & dont start smoking again! You have got over the worst- it would be a shame to give up now

| | No i'm not really eating anymore than normal. In fact i'm trying hard to make sure i don't snack and drinking more water than i normally manage. I just don't understand whyyyyyyyyyy
The only thing i can think of is that the pill is having some effect. I have just taken a months supply of the mini pill, to try and help with my monthly, which have been getting worse and worse since my 4 year old was born. It might be causing me to retain water, so i'm not going to take anymore and see if that helps.

| | | When you start to drink more water your body will retain it for a while...Maybe it's just water weight.

| | ^It must be something pill related then imo, because as you are doing so much cardio & watching your diet it is obviously not what you are eating that is causing the weight gain. It does take about 1-3months for the body to adjust to a new contraceptive pill, so you could either give it time & change your pill if you are still gaining weight in a few months, or just go to your GP now & get them to change your pill now. Depends how patient you are really

| | | I'm just gonna give up on the pill for now. I don't need it, it was just to try and regulate my periods until the doctor could sort out something else. I'm 36 with three kids so it time to look at my other options.
I was only back on it for 1 month and finished the packet last week, so hopefully it won't take long to get outta my system.
Anyhoo - Catwoman how are you getting on the the non-smoking? I've found it much easier for the last few days, i've stopped reaching out for them all the time lol.

| | I agree that it's probably just from the pill or water weight. It's been 6 weeks since I've quit, and I have not gained any weight so far.
Whatever you do, don't start smoking again just because you gained a few pounds. Are you also doing weight training with the cardio? If so, I highly recommend you take measurements (bust, waist, hips, thigh, arms, etc.) and keep track of that. That way you can see progress in a different form (example: maybe you gained a few pounds, but lost an inch or two somewhere.)
Good luck and stick with it. It will slowly start getting easier. |

| | No - i'm not going to start again. At the moment i'm feeling really positive about not smoking and not missing it as much as i thought i would. I have stopped in the past but only because i had to, when i was pregnant. This time i really wanted to stop and what they say about the wanting to is so true.
