The God Delusion

Dawkins pulls a lot of it together in this book. I really enjoyed it. Has anyone else read it?

I've been wanting to read it but I'm afraid I might already be bitter enough when it comes to religion. Can you give a more detailed review? Have you read any of his other books?

I have read "The Blind Watchmaker."

This will increase your bitterness, I'd guess...

Are you an atheist, I'm assuming?

I was thoroughly impressed with this one... he goes through a lot of the "proofs" of God's existence from the One Prime Mover to the ontological arguments to quite a few others....he addresses how false it is that religious people don't want scientific proof of religion....it's one of the better books I've read in a long time.

It's been on my night table since last year, but I haven't had the urge to pick it up.

Have you read The Selfish Gene?

Ummmm. Never mind!
I mixed it up with something I read on eugenics, which is way controversial. The Selfish Gene, not so much.

I haven't read the book, but I've seen Dawkin's documentary 'Root of All Evil.' One of the most interesting points he brought up was how we do not refer to children in terms of their parent's political party, but use labels such as "Catholic child" before they have the chance to form their own beliefs.

That is extensively covered in TGD and it is a VERY valid point - I despise that labeling and it is a form of brainwashing and an intellectual fallacy to boot.

Have you seen (not by Dawkins) the documentary The God Who Wasn't There? It's pretty sophomoric, but it does cover the basics of an intellectual assalt on Christianity - how it came about, who Jesus was (if he existed... which I think they spend too much time on, given that it is now fairly historically accepted that a man named Jesus did exist), the myth of Christmas, the Gospels, etc.

I think Dawkins does a better job in TGD with most of these points - especially the historicity of the Gospels, as most historians agree that they are generally outright fabrications other than the fact Jesus lived and was crucified by the Romans.

I highly recommend this book for any atheist or more importantly, any freethinking religious person who has doubts.

avatar, the more i learn about you, the more i believe you may be my soul mate!

i actually read this book as well, not because i am an athiest, but because i am an open minded free thinker.
sure i have my own beliefs, but that doesn't mean i must force those beliefs on others or refuse to accept (and explore) the alternative ideas.
i was raised catholic, and while i haven't completely abandoned the idea of faith, i have lost said faith in the church itself (as in The God Hypothesis). however, that is a different story....

the point here is that the book is interesting, if not compelling. i definately recommend it, even to religious zealots... it's at least worth your time to familiarize yourself with what you are arguing against.

you all should watch zeitgeist. I also wrote quite an expansive paper on the Jesus Story and its parallels throughout ancient history.
