A Thousand Splendid Suns

WOW! Who knew this author could write another riveting novel? I think this story is as powerful, if not more, than Kite Runner. If you have not read this book, you must; it is incredible.

The character build-up, the storyline, everything...it keeps you so involved. Khaled Hossaini rocks!

Mariam and Laila...

I bawled too; my hormones aren't helping much. Knowing how that culture is in some areas, I could actually understand the emotions they had.

This proves, once again, the strength of women.

I couldn't agree more. I loved the kite runner, but enjoyed a thousand splendid suns even more. I think it is because I could relate more to the female characters. Both amazing books though. I hope he will write a third...

I read when the youngest is sleeping; the two older ones are in school, and the two others are playing while I have some down-time. I insist on having one hour of uninterrupted time per day; they can play in their rooms, but they cannot come to me unless they absolutely need something. I also read when I have insomnia, which is quite often these days.

Joan, it would be so hard to give cliff notes for this book. Really, it's about the struggles of a young girl, rejected by her father, married at an obnoxiously young age to a much older man...gosh, if I tried to summarize it, I would do a great disservice.

Let's just say the strength of women will never be doubted after reading this book. It's a must-read.

Excellent read all-around. Riveting plot and writing style that flows. Complex characters, nothing flat.
Basically it's about two women coming from very different situations in Afghanistan, but their lives become intertwined when the beautiful younger one becomes the second wife of the same man in order to avoid the stigma of being an unwed mother. The older woman is abused and rejected by her husband, and treated as poorly as she was all of her life. It's about their struggles to rise above the obstacles both in their personal lives and in the political turmoil around them.
