The girl with the dragon tattoo

I got all three books in this set for Xmas:

The girl with the dragon tattoo
The girl who played with fire
The girl who kicked the hornets nest

Just wondering if anyone here has read them? I'm looking forward to starting as my sister gave them good reviews. I literally have a stack of about 19 books waiting for me to sink my teeth into.. my whole world stopped for a while when I read the Twilight series haha. Anyhoo.. opinions welcome!

I received the first one from my SO's parents. They both said they could not put it down, so I'm waiting for a time when I will be able to finish it once I start it!

Updating: I just read it over the past week. It took me a long time to get into it because the writing seemed odd since it's translated from Swedish. I ended up really liking it, and recommend it. Just be aware it involves some very graphic violent descriptions.

They are thrillers. I've only read the first, but basically it is about a disgraced journalist who is hired to solve the disappearance of a girl 40 years ago.

Here is the amazon link, with a brief summary.

I manage a book store and I get about 5 customers a day asking when the 3rd book is out, and trying to sell me the first because it's so good. I might have to break down and take their advice soon.

The movie intrigues me too though, anyone seen it? I used to watch a lot of Swedish movies a few years back when I decided to learn the language. Some great cinema from there!

I'm probably the only person in Sweden who hasn't read the books or seen the movies. I'll probably break down soon enough but when movies and books get super hyped (like these are, at least here in Sweden) I get turned off for some inexplicable reason.

Hur går det med svenskan då Ryan? Du får säga till om du vill öva.

Haha, det går inte så bra. Jag har inte talad svenska sedan 2007

I can still read the language reasonably well in most cases - I can browse aftonbladet and get the gist of most articles for example. That being said, I would be completely unable to hold a conversation. Pity, since I was up to about a 1500 word vocabulary at one point, which with practice is enough to be able to be quite functional. But well... no Swedes where I live, barring the occasional exchange student or tourist, so I gave up.

I had no idea they made movies of them. Just two days ago, I told my boyfriend that I bet they would make movies of them. I'll have to get my hands on a copy (with subtitles, of course!).

Män som hatar kvinnor (2009)
This is the link to the movie on IMDB. The first movie is supposedly terrific, but the other two were made for television rather than the silver screen with smaller budgets and all that.

Ryan> Vad synd!

I've read the first two books and have just ordered the third from the UK. Can't wait to read it. The second is better than the first. Well worth reading.

I heard a rumor (not sure of the validity) that "they" already commissioned an American remake of the Swedish films. Even without having seen the Swedish version, I'm concerned. They'll most likely cast Angelina Jolie in her millionth role as the "ass kicking female" even though based on the description of Lisbeth Salander in the novels, they couldn't look less alike.

Regarding the books themselves, I really enjoyed them. Graphic, as others have said, but gripping reads. Did you know that the original Swedish title roughly translates to "Men Who Hate Women" in English? Makes you wonder why the title was completely changed for American release...

Bought it today, time to get started. They really made the text large and spaced the lines out a lot to make it fill 800 pages, haha. Should be a quick read. Will post what I thought in a couple of days.

Kirie: Svenska är aldrig tortera! Det är just en lite svårt för mig att tala nu. Jag såg "Låt den rätte komma in" förra året, det var mycket bra! Jag gillade romanen också

It was difficult to get the pronunciation correct, but vocabulary and grammar were something I could practice on my own, and with online friends. I used to play an online game about 5 years back (Utopia), and knew quite a few Swedes through it, so they were very helpful. When I went to Sweden in 2005, I got a lot of practice in also, but most Swedish people I met wanted to practice speaking English with me when they noticed I was a foreigner :P

I just read the second book, The girl who played with fire, over the past few days. It is excellent - just as good as the first. I found it easier to read because I finally got used to the Swedish names!

I cannot wait for the 3rd one!

I watched the movie the other day (Highly recommend). Should I read the book first and then read the 2nd and 3rd books? Or should I just start reading the 2nd book?

Ok, after reading all of these posts, I'm going to pick the first book up again. I started it last fall and just couldn't get into it. I was too busy at that time and I, too, thought the first few chapters were boring. I just started Odd Hours by Dean Koontz, so as soon as I finish it, I will give The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo another try!

I found the first 150 pages or so difficult to get into, because of the action taking place in the past, as well as trying to keep track of so many Swedish names. It gets better!

I have finally gotten my husband reading the first book. I want him to get through it so we can watch the 2nd and 3rd movie when we go to Europe next week!

okay I finished it. I didn't find it to be a "wildly suspenseful... utterly engrossing thriller" like Washington Post found it to be like it says on the cover of it I agree with the "an intelligent, ingeniously plotted" part, but it never really had me on the edge of my seat at anytime of the book. Perhaps if I was more into the financial and business aspects of the book then maybe I would have been captivated, but I could care less about that area so I think I'm going to pass on the next two books.

I finally finished it. I reallly liked it once I got past the complicated financial connections and names in the first 150 pages. I liked the twists and turns and surprises near the end.
