Wicked by Gregory Maguire

I searched around the forum for this and didn't see a thread, but I liked this book, crazy details but I also love the musical! I didn't quite know where to put this! The music is great, I love Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth are great as Elphaba and Galinda. Anyone else read the book or seen the musical? It is a clever story of the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz.

I read the book, but it didn't really hold my attention. I did like the characterization of Elphaba though...

Have you read any of the other books he's written?

no, i haven't had a chance yet! have you? i was kinda leaning towards the Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, bc i also had trouble staying focused with Wicked, just too much going on imo. i don't think i'd enjoy Son of a Witch. lol i also heard they are making a Wicked the movie in 2010. i don't know how that will turn out...

Maybe I should try Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, too. I'm currently making a costume for one of Cinderella's wicked stepsisters, so maybe the book will inspire me to finish it more quickly. :-D

i read Wicked last year; it was a little long-winded but i enjoyed it. i didn't get a chance to see the musical unfortunately, i wonder how it translated? i almost always prefer the book.

Wicked is really tough to get through. There are a lot of details that are different between the book and the play. The book goes off on all kinds of highly detailed tangents that can be really distracting and difficult to follow. I wasn't able to finish it, and I rarely put books down.

I haven't read the books, but I saw the musical and loved it! It's amazing on stage, everyone should see it! I listen to the soundtrack all the time. I've always wanted to read the books, but after seeing what you guys have to say, maybe I'll just enjoy the musical and leave the books alone.

I have to agree with others who said the book is a bit confusing. I did like the book but it was slow going at times, and I usually read books quickly. I'm glad to hear that the play is good! I just hope I can get somewhere to see it this summer!!! The book is way too complicated for it to cover everything so I'm not surprised that there are a lot of differences.

I started to read this book because I heard a few recommendations. I couldn't really get into it though. I got about 3/4 of the way through the book and it still hadn't really even touched base about Dorothy. I put the book back and never picked it back up

^^ I thought the same. I still haven't finished it. But the play was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

I did not so much care for the book.

The book and the musical are VASTLY different.

LOVED the musical. Was husband's xmas gift to me - go to the show new years eve with black tie event immediately following at the place the show was (Kennedy Center). He did VERY good that year.
