How do you organize your books?

Not a review but please move it to general if you see fit.

How do you guys organize your books? My collection is growing bigger and bigger and I need advice on how to keep them. Do you use alphabetical order or by genre?

Totally not helpful but, i pass them all on to my mum for her to read, so that they are cluttering up her house and not mine!

mine is also not helpful...lol.

i just put my in clumps by author. not in alpha order. my bookshelf is full so some go on the floor and some go on top of the bookshelf....but they are messily organized by who wrote 'em

By author, and then if that author has a series (like the Alex Cross books) I keep each series together in order.

By genre. Plays with plays, poetry with poetry and novels well... all over the place.

All paperbacks together and organized by author. All comic books/graphic novels together and organized by series. Then hardcovers are organized somewhat haphazzardly by topic, then authors kinda clumped together. Jesse, I also have oodles of books, so I have piles of random books too. :-)

Me and the boyfriend are both big readers, and obsessive compulsive hoarders, so we have lots of books. When we moved into this house, we decided to put the 'library' and office in the loft that overlooks the living area. Not a very well thought out decision, but the one we made. Anyway, the first task was getting the book cases into the loft. Did I mention that the way to the loft is a small spiral staircase? So, we had to pass them up from outside and pull them onto the balcony. It was like monkeys f***ing a football. THEN we had to get all of our books up here. Did that about 15 at a time, with numerous trips up and down the stairs.

We're never moving. :-D

i'm sure that collection won't be getting any smaller. better just stay where you are...or hire some movers just for the loft!! i have very little time for reading...for all my tv watching, but i love books so i go to the library and get them on cd. i listen to them in my car on my way to and from work. then go out and buy the book to add to my collection i do read,....just takes me FOREVER to finish a book.

Books I've finished I organize by genre. However, I do have a favorite boo/author section. Books that don't go in this category I organize by genre, Unless I have more than 5 books by an author. If so, I organize by author. It seems unorganized, but it works for me.

This is most unhelpful, but...

I just have mine organized in fiction and non-fiction sections (at least for the ones that are on the bookcases). I also have random stacks of books all around my place. These are usually unorganized, but they do create fun obstacles in the middle of the night when I need to use the loo.

I have enough books to start my own library! I sorta group them by size...but they are sorta all over too! I am going to organize them all next week as I cannot stand for my books to be helter skelter.

this sounds like a cool idea. i would love to do this! although i would probably get too frustrated because all the authors would be out of place. or my OCD side will kick in and i'd try to find ways to organize subsections within the different colours .

this is my current arrangement as well. and james patterson occupies the most space on my shelves! alex cross is one of my favourite protagonists.

Organized by size. Short paperbacks on top shelf, taller paperbacks on middle, and hardback on bottom.
