Dyeing hair

I'm going to dye my hair back to dark brown next week. I'm still debating whether to go semi-permanent or permanent. Anyone else dye their hair to a darker color during winter months? My skin gets so pale by Dec. that blonde hair looks horrible on me.

I've never been blonde but I've had blondish highlights, and when I dyed it back, I used both permanent and semi-permanent dye on different occasions. I didn't really notice a huge difference in results to be honest. The first time I had a professional dye it back using permanent dye and the second, I just dyed it myself so I'm way too chicken to use semi-permanent on my own.

Make sure that you choose a shade that has a little red though. A lot of the time when people go from blonde to dark brown, their hair gets a green tint that looks really gross.

Ohh, no red, I have so much red in my hair, I'm hoping dyeing it will get rid of some of it. My hair isn't too blonde at all, just a ton of highlights.

I'd use a semi-perm first, and if you dont like th results go perm after 2 weeks, that way you have a choice.

I thought you were doing it at home! haha, try the semi perm at home, go to sallys, and they'll help you get all the right stuff, and it's semi perm, so if you botch it, a few good washings will fix you up. Put vaseline around your hairline, and twist your hair up and secure it with a couple pins while it develops, and you'll be set. all the supplies, (bottles, gloves, dye, etc. ) should run you about $20

My mother would kill me if I dyed my hair at home. I'm not exactly graceful, most likely I would get it everywhere I also have two tons of hair...I might be able to get it for less than $50 actually.

If you're doing it at a salon and know and like the stylist, use permanent dye if you're going back to your natural. Just easier that way.

Ehh, not sure what my natural color is, hasn't been that for 10 years . I'll probably go with the permanent. Semi-perm has a tendency to wash out in a week in my hair. This is how it's always been, any stylists, any dye. I think some dye might actually calm my frizzies down. I'll just have to deep condition afterwards bc it's a little dry right now is why I was even concerned. Thanks girls

get it done professionaly ONLY, and even then you have to find someone that knows exactly what they are doing! my best advice is if you see someone with a haircolor you like, ask them where they go/who they see.
it can take some time to find a good colorist. anyway, with darker hair, i don't really know how far you can lift color out to avoid the brassiness. i have ashy brown/dark blonde hair and even i had a hard time until i found the right girl!

oh, andi forgot to comment on the whole going dark in the winter thing... i did it for years and was actually JUST having this convo about 10 minutes ago. i can't decide whether i want to do it this winter or not. i just feel so washed out sometimes with blonde in the winter. ugh!! i don't know!!

I couldn't avoid it bc I had too much red hair dye in my hair from previous dye jobs, he toned my hair several times but the red came back anyways, he said he would have to bleach out my whole head and put color back in...I think I'm just going to have to grow it out

And it is extremely difficult to find a good colorist for hair that you can't just bleach or dye with perfect results. My hair is a pain to work with and I have yet to find a colorists who actually knows what they are doing around here

this is what i had happen, too. a few winters ago i had this AWESOME color, it was called chocolate cherry. it was dark mahogany (almost purple!) and i freakin loved it! BUT, that damn red stayed in my hair so long that trying to get it back to my cool blonde was near impossible. i ended up cutting 15" (and donating it to locks of love) and finally all the red is gone. and here i am wondering if i should go brown again! (but DEF not red, lol!)

Pretty much exactly what happened to me! I went crazy with the red browns last winter and the red shows up where I got highlights. I could cut my hair and get rid of half of strawberry left but I've been told not to by the men I know. No red brown ever again for me!

Marina you should try Reveal Salon! A few years ago I dyed my hair a super dark reddish, purpley brown color (it's hard to describe lol). After about a year, I decided I wanted to go back to blonde. It wasn't easy, but my stylist there did a great job and she always has the best ideas for new cuts for me to try.

I heard Reveal is the best place for blonde-ing. I should have gone there but I was scared it was going to be super expensive and then I ended up spending a ton anyways I'm just going back to brown...i'm too pale for the blonde anyways
