Tattoo care advice?

I'm not sure if I'm posting this is the right place but its the best past I could think of

Anyways, I got my first tattoo yesterday
I have been wanting/thinking about it for years but never got too serious about it
Now that I have it I'm completely in LVE with it

Ok, sorry for babbling, on to the point...
My tattoo artist gave me instructions for after care but wasn't that detailed
Afterwards I started reading articles online and everyone seems to agree that you need to apply some sort of lotion or ointment to it to keep it moistrized and healing but there seems to be a lot of controversy over what type...
I'm thinking avoid petroleum jelly but what about antibiotic ointment? and diaper rash creams?

Hopefully somebody out there with tattoo experience can help me out, any advice is greatly appreciated TIA!

I'm a tattoo artist and I always recommend Aquaphor to my clients. It's REALLY good for keeping the colors vibrant, too. Thin layer 2-3 times a day for the first few days...maybe up to a week depending on how much you start scabbing, then switch to an unscented lotion.

Thank you both for taking the time to respond!
I actually carry around a little tube of Aquaphor in my purse so I'm excited to hear that'll work
I'll use Aveeno lotion as my unscented lotion
So I used both of your pieces of advice

Anyways, one more quick question...
How long should I avoid exercising?
I'm sort of an exercise nut so I'm starting to get antsy

My tattoo artist always recommending giving your own artist a call and asking them as everyone will tell you something different and they know what works best for their clients. I recall showering the next day, then not showering for 2 days, then applying vitamin e ointment on it after that 2 X a day for a month. I just got my first one last year and plan on getting another soon. so lovely to use your body as a canvas
