Top layer of nails are peeling

Why are my nails doing this? The peel from the top near the top of the nail & become so thin & brittle. Any slight hit on my nails instantly breaks them. The used to be so healthy & strong.

I don't use acrylic nails. I rarely paint them. Maybe I'm lacking in a vitamin? Ugh!

Thanks!

Do you hit them against stuff at work or anything like that? That sounds odd that they are breaking and you don't normally use polish.

Are you a vegetarian or Vegan? Could be lack of protein or calcium.

Dryness in the air is said to cause this as well.

I do live in one of the driest climates in the world with the Great Salt Lake next door but I've never had this problem before.
They are peeling from the tip of the nail downward. They become so thin they break.
I eat meat so no worries there. I also had a physical not to long ago & my Dr. said that everything looked great.
I do work around strong solvents but I wear gloves so that wouldn't be it.

My nails used to grow long but now they are breaking everyday.

Erica...Im not sure why this is happening to you...maybe a change in hormones? My nails peel, also, and I found a product that really does help strengthen and lengthen nails. I got it on QVC a long time ago...and I just checked to see if they still sell it. They do! Its called T.I.P.S. Nail conditioning and strengthening. You might be able to find it elsewhere also. It really does work!

Erica my nails are much more breakable and bendable since I do wear rubber gloves almost all day and work with chemicals. I rinse with water then wear that gloves in a bottle stuff that helps make a protective barrier.

^Thanks Charla. I got a shellac manicure today & the little woman told me that I need to fix my nutrition when she saw my nails.

They have actually gotten better in a couple days with taking the hair, skin, & nails vitamins.

erica, i have this same problem lately. my eating is fine/healthy. i just had a physical with bloodwork and all was good with that, too. i have gotten a few shellac manicures which helped.. my nail lady said to try something called nail envy by opi. i havent tried it yet but she said it was great and swore by it for thin, "peely" nails like ours... also, i have heard that biotin would help this but i havent tried it myself so i cant attest to it!

did you put the nail envy over the shellac? did it ruin it? my lady said to do it when shellac was off but i havent tried it yet? so sorry! it sucks. i would say 7 out of 10 of my nails are peeled and weak. it totally stinks!

One great solution is gelatin. ;) They can harden your nails to prevent the top coat from ripping off.
