What home hair color do you use??

I NEED to color my hair but really can't afford the salon right now. I have typical thick "asian" hair that's long and I need to cover gray (that's my main concern). I did have my hair colored in the salon 4 months ago. It's a dark brown/mahogany color, which is pretty close to my natural color. I really want to keep it similar to the color I have now. I'm not opposed if it's a little bit lighter but I definitely don't want to be darker (i.e. black).

So... what are brand recommendations ladies/gents?? Or ones to stay away from?

When I went dark brown I used garnier fructis in dark chocolate. It starts off pretty dark and then fades some. It was the highest reviewed on Make up alley. I can't speak on the gray question though.

Thanks Jasmin, I had heard/read good things about that brand as well. My main issue is that it doesn't color my hair funky weird color and that it actually covers the gray since that's my problem I've read about the colors (especially the darker colors) not turning out the right color, or orange-ish or super black! I'm so nervous, I've never dyed my hair myself!!

I buy Matrix SoColor online. It's a popular brand used in salons. My friend who owns a salon recommended it to me. I get mine on ebay. One 3 oz. tube is about $9. And I only use half of it each time I dye my hair (which is shoulder length). You just have to mix it with equal parts developer. I just get developer from Sally Beauty. Any brand of developer works. IMO, the results I get from Matrix SoColor are 10x better than drugstore brands and feels less damaging to me.
Here is the link of the site that shows the shades available in the SoColor line.

You can buy it on this site too if you don't find your shade on ebay. Ebay is just a little cheaper so I go there instead.

I use Garnier bc it covers up the gray. I used to really like Feria but it does not work on the grays very well. My hair also feels really soft and healthy afterwards. Also, I have never had a problem with the color turning out weird but the color I use is very close to my natural color.

Revlon color silk is really awesome for touch-ups, and it's only like $3. In an article I read it also consistently scored highest on areas like gray coverage and time before fading. I believe it's ammonia free as well.

Jess, I help my mom color her hair, and I use the Garnier Nutrisse as well. It covers her gray well. I use the Dark Brown color -- it's like the 05 I think. It's one shade lighter than their darkest black, and it looks really natural on my mom. If you look at my wedding pics on FB, I colored her hair a week prior. You can compare it to her pics from Bazel's 1-month party, and you can see how much gray she had!

I second this! I have to do my roots every few weeks to cover the grays and it works great! And super cheap.

This is the one I used pretty exclusively now. It covers the grays well and I don't have to do it as often. I use brown black and it's dark without being too harsh. I've tried the foams and some others and I swear the gray started showing through almost immediately.

Perfect 10, I love that it's done in 10 minutes and it takes care of the grays.
