Starting Retin A Micro..

Hello! I finally got retin a micro from my doctor. I am picking it up from wags tomorrow night. I got a new doctor who told me my insurance would probably cover it. (My old doctor said there was no way. ) Anyways I am a scared to use it because of all the peeling. What do I need to know? I've been using Avon magix primer which has spf 20 (active ingrediants are 7.5% octinoxate and 4% octisalate)Is that broad spectrum or do I need to use my dry touch? Also should I use my pc skin recovery moisturizer? BHA in morning still? I just want clear skin and the aging is my secondary concern.

I used Retin-A Micro for a year and my skin never stopped peeling the whole time I used it. Since you apply it at night, it shouldn't matter what type of sunscreen you wear in the daytime...I would just make sure it is non-comedogenic. Me personally, I use a dry touch 55spf on my face. As for moisturizer, my derm recommended one to me that wouldn't clog my pores...which was Complex 15.

I would try just using the Retin-A Micro by itself first and if it doesn't cause irritation and excessive dryness then you can incorporate the BHA in the AM. You don't want to over-exfoliate your skin or it will be raw, red and uncomfortable. Plus doing this will increase your oil production as your skin tries to compensate for all the excessive exfoliation, and then you get more clogged pores. Vicious cycle, I know.

I use the regular Retin-A now and my face doesn't peel anymore, I actually prefer it over the Micro.

I used Micro and never had any big peeling problems. Only when I was exposed to the sun one day. Try to work your way up to it by maybe putting it on and washing it off after 30mins or so. Keep increasing the time you keep it on until you wear it overnight. You can do this over a few weeks.

Like Char said though, I heard people tend to peel less on the regular Retin-A. As far as your insurance not covering I think it typically depends on what the doctor says it is treating. Insurance won't cover wrinkle cream, but will likely cover acne treatment.

I tried it and my derm put me on a little regimen to get adjusted to it initially. Went like this: Use (at night) Tues, Thurs for two weeks then Tues, Thurs, Sat for two weeks then every night thereafter. I still had the initial peeling, redness but that eventually went away and I have been using it ever since with no problem.

i've nothing to add except that you probably don't want to use this if you're trying to get pregnant.

I've used it since I was about 12 years old. I would definitely use the Dry Touch as that is a better sunscreen. To prevent peeling, I try to wait awhile after washing my face at night before putting the Retin-A on (to let some of your natural oils build back up on your skin,) or even put on a light coat of moisturizer in between the wash and the Retin-A. It does decrease the efficacy a bit to do this, but it's not a bad idea in the first few weeks to let your skin adapt to it. After 2-3 weeks, stop the moisturizer and see if your skin can handle it. Unless you have VERY sensitive skin, after a break-in period you should be fine.

But DEFINITELY use a good sunscreen. Otherwise you'll be irrirated a lot (not sunburnt, but your skin will just be unhappy. You'll notice.)

I forgot to ask about that! Thanks Cat!! I haven't even gotten it from the pharmacy yet. Now this is a totally pointless thread.
