looking 4 otc face cream for acne/acne scarring/improvement in tone & texture?

i thought i'd start a new thread for recommendations. i have read the anti-aging and acne threads on here but i didn't find any specific otc/drugstore recommendations? i was considering Roc(retinol) or Olay Regenerist(peptides) products. i have read some reviews but was wondering if anyone on here had any experience with these personally or knew someone who had or knew of a better otc product i could use. all the problems i mentioned in the title are very minor for me and i am looking for general improvement over time, nothing miraculous.

I have the olay regenerist microsculpting stuff. It is highly scented so I don't use it.

You probably want to look for the word "whitening". Whitening is supposed to help lighten up hyperpigmentation caused by acne scarring or dark spots. I don't know how much you want to spend though. I used to have good results with Olay Regenerist Microsculpting Cream a long time ago.. in improvement of my overall skin texture, but either they changed the formulation or my skin has changed b/c I tried using it again and it irritates my face so much and I get red rashes Same with the Roc.. I thought I was having okay results at first but then it just started irritating me. I'm using the Bio Performance Super Advanced Revitalizer with Whitening from Shiseido right now as my night cream and I'm seeing great results but it does retail for around $100 Their "White Lucent" line is more affordable and worked pretty well for me when I used it in the past.

Thanks for the post and great advice, Carol!

I wonder if you can still use the whitening stuff while using Proactiv? Whoever thought it was fair that a 34 year old gets zits like she's in high school was NOT NICE. Oh well...but yes, now I have acne scars, pregnancy mask...probably sun damage too as well as wrinkles. Sheesh!

no prob! I was a little sleepy when I was typing out my response yesterday so I woke up this morning and couldn't even remember what I wrote!

I forgot to mention "whitening" not only helps to fade hyperpigmentation but also help improve overall skin clarity/brightness as well. Of course it does differ for everybody about how much result they achieve using a certain product. I'm not sure how your skin would react to different products though since treatments aimed at these kinds of solutions (antiaging/skin brightening) are designed to be more on the moisturizing side which might get you too oily.. or it might not. My brother is on Proactive too, but we find his skin looks better if he uses a more moisturizing moisturizer (but still should be oil free!) lightly than the Proactive one, since Proactive tends to start drying his skin out with long term use and his skin decides to start producing more oil to compensate for the dryness causing more breakouts. You could try just sticking w/ the normal Proactive cleanser/toner and apply spot acne treatments on the areas you have breakouts, then dab on another moisturizer lightly instead of using the Proactive one?

Or maybe you could try a serum like Boscia's Antioxidant Recovery Treatment which is supposed to "fights blemishes and helps prevent and repair the appearance of aging skin. An infusion of anit-irritant willowherb soothes skin as peony root and licorice hydrate and revive sun-damaged skin, and fight free radicals. The result is a clearer, brighter, younger-looking complexion." You could use the Proactive line but add in a serum like this before the moisturizer. I've used it and seen improvement with it as well.

Oh, how could I forget! These Philosophy Microdelivery pads work wonders too for skin tone & texure too. I read reviews that people who suffer from breakouts have used them successfully as well.

anne, I used to use proactiv but then I read that it caused aging.. Carol do you know anything about this? I miss having the clear skin I used to have when I used proactiv.

^It may...it makes sense...it's drying out your skin. But honestly, I've had acne all of my life...and my quality of life goes up 100% when my face is "clear" and even with Proactiv, I still have breakouts. SUCKS. So, until there is a miracle cure without taking accutane or antibiotics, it's what I'll do. It's like this sinister catch22.

I will eventually look into microdermabrasion I think. I'll need to do research.

I have no idea but I agree with what Anne said. I think using any acne medicated stuff for a long period will cause premature aging since it is designed to dry out your skin.. and dry skin forms wrinkles more easily. I've only used Proactiv for like a month or so in middle school so I can't speak from experience.. but my brother has been using it for the past few years and all I know is his skin looks so dehydrated and older than before. It does keep his face clearer from breakouts than other systems he has used in the past, but it has worsened his skin tone and texture.

thanks for the advice carol. the $100 is well outside of my price range and whitening usually implies hydroquinone in my price range, and i know that i react very poorly to that, and i don't even have very sensitive skin. i think i am going to give olay a try and pray i don't have a bad reaction. it's bogo at cvs this week so will not have to fork out as much. if that fails me after a month or so i'll try the philosophy.

Thanks again, Carol.

no prob at all yeah the $100 cream is quite pricey but I'm sharing with my mom.. otherwise I wouldn't have bought it on my own! It defiinitely has faster and better results than I've gotten with any other product though! Hopefully the Olay stuff works for you. My skin used to not be sensitive at all but I guess it's much more sensitive now b/c things I used before successfully are now irritating my skin

Hay....not sure if this will help you, but I used to use Proactive for a long time, but decided it was probably too harsh for my aging skin, so I switched to Dr. Perricone Nutritive Cleanser, and rarely get a breakout. I love it!

i've had good results with alpha hydrox aha souffle. it's 12% glycolic acid, so it exfoliates to help improve skin texture and fade hyperpigmentation. you have to use a good sunscreen with it, which you should already be using anyway.

you can find it at ulta for around $16.

Thanks Cat! That's basically what the Philosophy Microdelivery pads that I use is since it also contains AHA.. so when I run out of those, I'll have to give the AHA Souffle a try since it is like less than 1/3 the price of the Philosophy ones I buy

Its the benzoyl peroxide that is the active in pro active that is pro-aging. I know it will clear your face up for a while but in the long run its terrible. Its much better to use a product with salicylic acid or glycolic that helps with cell turnover. These are also good for acne and breakouts. Anything with AHA or BHA is good like what Cat suggested.

Benzoyl peroxide creates free radicals and is known to cause premature skin aging, just like repeated sun exposure or persistent acne. Damage is determined by the concentration of benzoyl peroxide and the frequency and duration of use. While moderate to severe acne will cause the skin to age quickly, the use of benzoyl peroxide will significantly increase this speed.

I used to break out all the time and went in for a facial where the esthetician offered me a salicylic peel. I started using a salicylic wash back then (about 6 months ago) and rarely break out anymore.

I use this one by Peter Thomas Roth:
Sephora: Peter Thomas Roth Beta Hydroxy Acid 2%

just to add to this, i got a sample of ole henriksen's "sheer transformation" a while back and was instantly hooked. i have super sensitive skin (prone all sorts of weird allergic reactions!) and some light acne scars. it makes my skin feel soooo moisturized as a little goes a long way AND it definitely has brightened up my skin. i've been using it for a few months now and the texture difference is huge.

Ditto, that or the 10% Enhanced Cream (it has less cloggers from what I've read on Makeupalley & it hasn't broke out my acne-prone skin since I started using it, which was a couple weeks ago).

Also, in the May issue of Instyle (I think with Kate Hudson on the cover) there are $5 off $10 coupons for Ulta

ok. this suggestion made my day. thanks so much. so since i really wanted to stick to my budget, i decided to go with the alpha hydrox lotion, not the souffle(it's too humid where i live for anything too thick and the aha percentage is lower) and i got a suncreen/moisturizer from the olay pro-x line on sale. i'm going to stick to my current nothing special face wash for now.

on a kind of unrelated note, i was so excited when i went to the website for alpha hydrox to see body products with exfoliators in them at such a reasonable price. if my face reacts well to their products, i am definitely going to invest in their body care. thanks again Cat.

And thanks everyone for your advice. i just want to say how helpful it is to be able ask people with actual experience with stuff and not random reviewers or a company's own hype. i haven't been on here in a bit but when i needed input i came straight here, and you guys gave excellent advice.

I feel your pain Anne. I'm just clearing up from a breakout on my face and shoulders earlier in the week. WTH . Your skin looked amazing when you were up here though!

Cat, thanks for the tips!

Charla, that makes me want to cry about the benzoyl peroxide. I used to use that stuff so much! Oy!
