Bra size measuring-what is the right way?

I haven't bought a new bra for ages & just went to get measured. My sister said VS measures incorrect so I went to Dillards. I have worn a 34D forever & the new measurement was 32DDD. WTF?
I bought the bra with that measurement & it fits perfect but I know I'm not that big. Has bra sizing went vanity like jeans?

Yeah, bra sizing is all fucked up now. Except, I've noticed that some of the new As are the same cup size as my old Bs.

How did she measure you Erica? I've seen a couple methods and I'm not sure which one is the "correct" one.

Someone in a different thread (Anthro thread? idk) mentioned a website called linda's online that had a bra size calculator. It took the measurements of your bust at the largest point and the measurements of where the band is and calculated it based on that. I've been a 34C since my freshman year of HS and it calculated me to be a 30F/30FF.
So I have no idea what bra size I should be wearing either. All of my bras fit fine, but I'm curious to know if that ridiculous size would actually fit. My boobs are really NOT that big...

trying to remember my lingerie fitting experience...
ok.. while wearing an unpadded bra...

1. for band size, measure around your ribcage, under your boobs. add 4 to that number if its even. Add 5 if its odd.
2. the easiest way i find to measure your cup is to take your tape measure, and measure from underneath the bottom of your boob to the center of your nipple.
1"= A
2"= B
3"= C
4"= D, etc, etc.

OR you can measure this way for cup size instead... or do both so you can be certain..

Measure around the fullest part of your boobs. The difference between this measurement and your first measurement is your cup size... if the difference is :
0" - A
1" - B
2" - C
3" - D
4" - DD or E
5" - DDD
6" - F... and they get bigger from there lol

try it out!

OH also you can swap bra sizes by increasing the band size and lowering the cup size if you can't find your proper size in a bra you want... i.e.
a C 34 can also be a B 36
a C 36 can also be a B 38... etc.

She measured at the top of my boob all the way around. Also with my arms up, then down. She didn't measure the cup. She just guessed at first bringing 2 different cup sizes & just had me start trying on. She stayed in there with me & told me what was wrong or right with each bra. The ddd was the one that fit perfect. It took a long time but the bra is well made & will last so I'm happy but just shocked at the size.

^ erica the size might be shocking, but a 32DDD is also a 34DD... so you could probably fit that size too.

America, if only you were there! Dammit.
Dana, thank you. It is so confusing. Why would those be the same? That makes no sense.

because you're basically taking an inch from the cup size and adding it to the band size instead... or vice versa.
I am a 34C but can also sometimes do a 36B if there isn't my size in something ;) it's a cool little trick that works wonders sometimes.

here, i found this video explaining my method so you can see it properly in action:
YouTube - How To Measure Your Bra Size

i still prefer the first way of measuring i mentioned for the cup size (bottom of boob to nipple), but lots of people like this way better.

I measure out to be a 32b with almost every possible way there is to measure, and that's what fits me best...but if you saw me naked there's no way you'd think I was a b, lol. So I definitely think bras are a bit vanity sized now...but that being said you definitely look like at least a dd Erica

I haven't noticed vanity sizing at all. I have always bought the same size since I was probably 20.

Neither have I... That would kinda be dumb to vanity size bras since sizing is pretty universal! Are you sure you're not buying the wrong size instead? That would make more sense.

Also Erica the way she measured you with your arms up is wrong... You shouldn't ever take a measurement that way... Always with the person standing naturally with arms to their sides. And you haveee to measure for the cup. A lot of places measure wrong, we would hear stories all the time at my old workplace. Even top stores and media tell women to do it wrong... We were always sent memos after a show aired (I.e. Oprah did a show once on it and it was totally wrong) making sure not to follow their way.

I wish I could take all you bra challenged ladies shopping hahaha.. It's much easier to fit someone in person because not everyone has the same boobs and needs.

i believe you, erica.
in my experience, not all brands run the same. i'm guessing your new bra fits similar to your old ones since the cup size is actually very similar. as dana said smaller band sizes have smaller cups. the cup on a 30ddd isn't going to be the same as the the cups on a 32ddd or 34ddd. the new one probably fits even better than your old ones because the band is smaller and the cups are probably a bit closer together than the 34d that you were wearing. it's likely a better fit on your frame

I just checked out the linda's online calculator and for sure it is not right for me. I usually buy 34B but I think I am probably 32B or 32C. It said I'm 30DD/E! That would definitely not work!
