split ends. what is the culprit.

i cant figure out why i get split ends so quickly. i wash my hair at night and let it air dry. i sleep on a silk pillow. i wake up and its pin straight [yay for asian hair] and only have to brush it. so i rarely ever blow dry or straighten my hair. maybe once a month. so what's the culprit? maybe different shampoo/conditioner? i wash my hair every night cause if i dont my hair gets super oily the next day. i also need a thick conditioner cause my hair gets super tangly esp when i have alot of split ends. ive heard of the whole devacurl but i dont have curly hair. or do i need a different hair brush?

I have extremely hard water, which i think is definitely my culprit. Not much you can do about that except getting a water softener unit, which even that didn't seem to totally fix my water.

i live in an apt complex so im not sure if that's an option. i also recently got a humidifier. not difference off the bat but i may just need to wait a little on that. i got it more for static and my skin. but someone said it will help yr hair too. but i dunno.

i think if you brush it too much or something it can cause it too? cause you're causing stress to the hair ? LOL sorry i'm not sure if i was much help, i have lots of split ends too but i straighten my hair daily even though my hair is straight but i've heard that about combs, esp when your hair is tangled

ETA: i think it might've been cause if your hair is tangled and you try to work it out, sometimes you end up "breaking" the hair (when you thikn it's come untangled)

I totally second the hard water. My water sucks and I get split ends 3-4 weeks after a cut (I do heat-style, but only a quick blow-dry and straightening every other day with heat protectants).

Have you tried using a dry shampoo before? If you can get away with washing your hair every other day, you can use the dry shampoo to absorb oil in between washings. And what kind of brush are you using? Have you tried using one with wider-set bristles or even a wide-tooth comb instead?

Maybe start using a leave in conditioner on the ends.

How often do you get your hair cut or trimmed? A lot of my split ends come just from the hair aging and infrequent trims.

this is the kind of brush i use. i started using a leave in conditioner for static and that didnt really help. i usually get it my hair cut every 3 months.

how do you know if you have hard water?

^My water builds visible calcium deposits on my faucets, and it just feels drying to my skin. In contrast, if you have soft water, it might be more difficult to rinse off soap and other detergents, when you're washing your hands for example. That's the best way I can think to describe it.

if you don't mind my asking, what shampoo and conditioner do you use?

as far as leave-in conditioners, i usually go by what the directions on the bottle say.

I think it's simply just tools like straighteners, irons, & dryers.
