| | | clear/grey hair? I was mortified to find a transparent/grey hair the other day. It kind of varies between clear and gray, all the way down. It's weird. DH has had a few, but I've never noticed one before.
That being said, it's in my long bangs, so if it had been there for a long time, I would have noticed it. Do strands hair just randomly lose color? Would it be an age/genes thing? Or a stress/nutrition type of deal?
I know my mom had a lot of greys in her early 30s, and I'm hoping that's not the case with me. I like to dye my hair for fun, not out of necessity.

| | | I noticed my first gray when I was about 14 or 15. Now I'm 18 and can find plenty of them if I look for them. It's probably in your genes, my mom started getting gray hairs around the same time I did.

| | | I'm not sure how old you are, but you're probably just taking after your mom. You may not have noticed it, The whole strand wouldn't have suddenly turned white. My mom started losing her color early, and I'm same as ^, I remember having 1 or 2 since I was in my early teens and I've got a lot now.
But if your mom ages well otherwise, I think that's one of the best of the worst to have passed on. I say I'll take that any day over horrible cellulite, weight gain and wrinkles. Costs to maintain, but it's an easy thing to fix! |

| | | I only have a handful at 33 but my sister 12 months older than me is all gray on top.
Mine are cool though. I'm excited when I'm old & my hair is all white/silver. |

| | Dang!
My dad has aged really well, and looks 10-15 years younger than he is, I'm *really* hoping I take after him in that aspect, as my mom looks at least her age/older. She has stayed pretty small though, for not being active. That's one advantage I'll have I suppose, I've always been more active than her, and plan to continue.
I wish I knew which traits I'd get from both parents I have my dad's hair color/texture, and look more like him too, so he didn't get any greys until his mid 40s, and that was only in his beard.
When I'm older, I'd love having silver/white hair, but... I don't want to start now!!
Thanks Brigid, Cher (? ), and Erica

| | Staycii, it might not be anything. I found a couple of hairs that were clear/whitish when I was a teenager, but I still have not a single gray/white hair otherwise (I'm 27). I don't think that finding un-pigmented hairs is that uncommon.

I had hairs that grew in flamingo pink for about 5 months so I suppose anything is possible!

| | | I believe genetics plays the biggest role in how/when you get gray/white hair. I started getting white/or unpigmented looking hairs when I was 18 and I have been getting more every year. (I am now 34) Interestingly for me though they are currently growing in one area, a large streak towards the front of my hair on one side. My mother started going gray very early as well (so I completely expected this) but hers grew in all over and not in one area. I personally like the way it looks and I don't have to go to the trouble yet of coloring. I do get random comments and questions from strangers occasionally since it is fairly prominent now. If you pluck the white hair that does not mean it will grow in coarse that is due to the nature of white/gray hair.It has a thinner cuticle than pigmented hair, which means its outer layer is easily damaged and dehydrated, making the hair coarse and kinky. Many of mine are both coarse and kinky looking, but nothing you can do about that.

| | | ^ I always wondered why some of my gray ones are kinky whereas the rest of my hair is very smooth and straight. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
