Grow hair... GROW!

Soooo has anyone had any amount of success doing anything to help your hair grow faster? I've heard the only way to achieve this is by stimulating the hair follicles... is this true?

I have been growing out my hair colour for like umm... 7 months (?) and it is driving me crazzzzy. It's only grown about 3-4 inches and looks redonkulous right now. My hair is dyed a lighter blonde colour but my real hair is like a dark blonde, so it's not like a crazy difference in shades but it's enough to make me almost want to just dye it again lol. But i mustn't! I am def not going to dye it all my natural colour to blend it in either. been there, done that, it never matches properly, plus the whole point of this is to be NATURAL.

So yeah, any magic potions or tips? or should i start finding hats that suit me?

if you find out, let me know! I know my friend took some kind of vitamins or something but I don't know if she saw results. My hair has been the same length it seems for the past year or so and I think it has just reached a stopping point or something.. so I'm just about to give in and get some clip in hair extensions to get the length I want!

How often do you trim it? I've noticed that really helps.

How about taking Biotin? It seemed to help when I was trying to grow out a BAD haircut (that put me in a bad mood for months )

I also hear Prenatal vitamins work, but I wouldnt suggest this.

get pregnant

i think no matter what you do, hair grows about 1/2" on average per month. 3-4" in 7 months is reasonable. processing will make the hair break off more easily and can give the illusion that it's not "growing" when in fact the breakage is the real issue.

Well, i trim the front the most to get my long side bangs out of my face and the proper length... probably every month or so, but the rest of it I only trimmed once in 7 months lol.

trimming does not make your hair grow faster, it just appears to because it evens out the hair length and looks thicker. think about it: how would trimming off the bottom of your hair make your hair grow faster, being the hair follicles are on your scalp?

massaging will certainly make your hair shinier and may may slow down hair loss in some cases

I would get more frequent trims. You're probably experiencing some split ends and breakage if you haven't gotten it trimmed in 7 months.

I was going to say this lol. My hair grows like a weed when I'm pregnant & then none when I'm not. It doesn't help me to trim every 6 weeks because she just trims off what grew. Very frustrating.

Betsy, why not prenatals? They are just vitamins right? No harm.

I am actually taking silica vitamins right now. I don't know yet if they are working but I'll let you know. They are very expensive too

Biotin is the B7 Vitamin. You'll find it in B Complex Vitamins, it will help to take it.

I took ShenMin once and my hair grew a fair bit, but I'm not sure if it's actually the pills or my hair was in it's regular stage of growth.

'They say' that trimming when it's a full moon makes it grow faster.

^ a full moon!! haha wtf...
i just did a short bit of research and what i found said that the less you do to your hair the better, and the growth mostly depends on how well you take care of it, and your body. so i guess the vitamin thing would work well
i'm gonna tone down the styling a bit and see what happens. i've just thrown it into a pony tail and it looks funny... the hair pulled back is all dark and the actual pony tail is light blonde haha.
i do remember now that when i was younger and growing my bangs out, i always had them pushed back in a barette and they grew so fast. Not sure why, but maybe keeping it up will help?

Yeah...they are just vitamins but in a higher dose to provide for mom and baby. I just dont think taking anything at higher doses than needed is a good idea. I know that people have taken them when they are not pregnant, but I would check with the M.D. first or at least a qualified individual at a nutrition store.

Biotin can be found at a nutrition store (and other stores) It is supposed to be good for skin, nails and hair.

I'm definitely curious. I want to grow my hair out, but (as we all know ) I have no patience, and it looks like crap for the first 2 years.

^ Be careful with keeping it up Dana, I had my hair clipped back or up in a ponytail when I was growing it last time, and it caused a LOT of breakage, giving me frizzy, awful hair. I *can't* keep it down b/c it's always in my way, so it's definitely stopping me from trying. I am going to "grow" it this winter, but it's just going to be a wider/longer mohawk.

Yeah, I take prenatals too. They are meant to be taken BEFORE you become pregnant. Thus the "pre". As far as whether my hair has grown because of them...I can't really tell.

someone needs to do an experiment with the prenatals and hair growth haha.
so, if they are made for before you get preggers, how soon before you get preggers are you supposed to start them? or it doesn't matter i guess...? can they mess with your body at all?

I'm not familiar with the primary research on them but as far as I know, they are merely vitamins and will not hurt you. I am only taking them on my stylists recommendation to grow my hair. I am not using them to prepare my body for pregnancy.

FYI..."prenatal" means "pre-birth"...the word natal refers to the baby during and after birth (ie during pregnancy itself). therefore, taking prenatals is most important to be taken DURING and throughout pregnancy, not "just" before (although before is a good idea too). baby benefits from the vitamins too. not sure if that's what you were saying, but i wanted to clarify.

I've had friends take prenatals to grow their hair and they've had no problems. I know one checked with her doctor and he said it wasn't a problem.

ETA, and don't women take them when they're trying to get pregnant? I know I've heard that on other sites.

I think research has shown that if you take them while you are trying, i.e. well before you are pregnant it further decreases the risks of certain birth defects due to the folic acid. I remember my sister telling me this when she worked for March of Dimes. She took them daily.

Folic acid

Dana!! lol, did you see my fb rant about this exact same issue!! idk what to do to mine either, but I'm pretty sure that my hair grows even LESS than 1/2" per month. I mean, the last time I dyed my hair blonde was... literally 2.5 years ago and my roots have only grown out about 5 inches. Fucking pisses me off. Plus the dyed parts are so awful with the breaking and split ends. I just can't bear to cut it all off though. I need my hair long.

So jealous! I have the same problem as Erica, every time I go to get a trim I have to say bye bye to any length I've gained. I've purchased those Hair, Skin & Nails vitamins in the past, but I never end up sticking with taking them so I have no idea if they work.
