recommendations on face primers please

I've never used any type of makeup primer before & I was wanting to try one out to see if it makes any difference. I think my makeup stays on well but when I had a conversation w/ my friend she was really shocked I didn't use anything but moisturizer on my face before I apply my foundation. I was thinking of getting this Mac Prep & Prime & wondered if anyone uses this or have any other suggestions on a good one.

Thanks!

I use this Bare Minerals one along with BM foundation. It works really well for me!
Bare Escentuals bareVitamins Prime Time

My mom uses this Smashbox one with her liquid foundation, and it works well for her. I have tried it before, and like it as well.
Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer

I don't really have any more knowledge to share about primers, but I did notice a HUGE difference in the way may makeup looks and feels since I started using one. I would recommend the BM one if you use mineral makeup.
I'm sure Carol will reply soon, and she is a makeup genius so I'd wait for her.

I used to use MAC Prep + Prime but switched to DHC Velvet Skin Coat and Bare Escentuals Prime Time (as linked above)

Velvet Skin Coat, Face Make Up | Makeup | DHC

Both of those feel quite similar to me. Kinda a silky feeling (maybe even silicone like). I like how it smooths fine lines & pores.

Ironically, I used Prep + Prime today and I like how it has a bit of glow but I still don't like it as much as the others.

I have a sample of Smashbox Photo Finish Primer which I'll try tomorrow and I'll update my thought on it then.

ETA: I am mistaken, it is Laura Mercier that I have, not Smashbox

a makeup genius! nah, I'm just someone who can't seem to stop spending money on makeup!

I agree with these lovely ladies suggestions. I've never used MAC's Prep + Prime, but my friend uses it and swears by it. I've heard good things about the BE ones as well. I personally use Smashbox. It does what it's supposed to do - help foundation go on smoother and last longer so I've never seen a reason to stray from something that works for me.

As for what your friend says. The necessity of a primer depends for each person. For some people it's a must. For me, it's an extra step in my makeup routine that I have no problem skipping. I think it is only really necessary for people who find that foundations seem to slip off their face by the end of the day or get eaten up by their skin.. which are situations that tend to happen to people with oily skin. I have dry skin and I have no problems with having foundation last all day on me so I only really use it for the purpose of helping my foundation go on smoother. I used to use it more when I used mineral powder foundation (since powder foundations have a tendency to look more cakey than other types), but I don't use mineral foundation anymore.. so the only time I reach for a primer is.. when I feel like using it.. ? I have dry skin with an even texture and hardly any fine lines/wrinkles and no visible pores.. so a primer really is not necessary at all. Usually the purposes of a primer are to provide a base that the foundation can adhere to (which helps make it last longer), help fill in fine lines and disguise pores, and keep oil under control.. So if you don't really have any of these issues.. you will probably notice very little difference on whether you have on primer or not.

I use the Bare Minerals one too. I used to use Alexis Vogel primer but the Bare Minerals one is 'smoother'. I also use Mineral foundation.

Hmm, my skin is pretty much like yours actually Carolicious. My skin is dry & not oily at all. Same on the pores- you can't see any on my face with or w/o makeup on. I don't ever touch up my makeup at the end of the night or anything so I think for the most part my makeup stays on well. I guess my friend has the opposite skin & that's why she uses it everyday. I'm still a lil curious though.... I think I may still buy each of the primers you ladies suggested & return them if I don't see any difference. Thanks for all the suggested primers ladies

What about eyeshadow primers? What do you think of those?

^ a must!! the last time I put on eyeshadow w/out a primer was when I didn't know any better back in my early high school years. A primer will help your eyeshadows last all day, look more vibrant, and help prevent creasing. It really makes a huge difference!
