Curling Rods

I really, really want to try one.

Does anyone own one? Are they worth it or should I just invest in a new flat iron and use that to curl?

I found this one and it looks really nice, but not sure I want to spend that much

Amazon.com: HAI Elite Digital Ceramic Ionic Tourmaline Rod, 1-1/2"…

If you own one, let me know what you think of yours.

I have no idea about the HAI one but clipless curling rods are awesome. They give you this curl that you just can't get from a regular curling iron.. although you could just take a regular curling iron and not use the clip and wrap your hair around it like you would w/ curling rods. Enzo Milano is the most famous clipless curling rod and Beauty Choice has deals for them quite often making them quite affordable (around $60).

I use a regular curling iron and wrap my hair around it instead of clipping it. Works the same way as the rods

I have tried this a few times but can't seem to get the ends close enough without burning my fingers. Is this because I use a large curling iron (1 1/4") or because I am just not skilled enough yet?

Probably a combination of both. If I remember correctly your hair is not much longer than shoulder length. That iron is too large to get much result with hair that short. I find a 3/4" iron gives me the best results and my hair is to the small of my back. When I first started doing this I used a heat glove. You can use a regular glove as well. It took 3 or 4 times for me to get the hang of it and lose the glove.
