Eyeliners!

Hey everyone! I was just wondering what kind of eyeliner is great for the waterline that won't smudge, glides on smoothly and has a pretty strong lasting power. THANKS

gel eyeliners for sure have the best lasting power on the waterline but they aren't approved for use on the waterline though so that's up to you to decide. I've worn it w/ no problem. Otherwise, Guerlain Loose Eye Kohl is my fav for the use on the waterline just b/c it's so fast and quick (if you apply it the "Eastern" method) and it's actually designed for use on the waterline. The lasting power is pretty good if you set below your lash line with some powder. However it's $35 or so. A cheaper alternative is the Loreal HIP loose khol powders. They're not as top notch as Guerlain and the applicator is different, but gets the job done. These loose kohl liners just give you a really smoldering sex appeal look , it looks different from if you used a gel liner or a pencil liner on your waterline. I can't quite explain it, but it really does look different in a good way! And once you get the "Eastern" method down of applying, it takes 2 sec (literally) to do both the top and lower waterlines!

Guerlain///////////////////////////////////////////////Loreal

I haven't found any pencil liners that last more than 2 hrs or so on my waterline and I've pretty much tried every pencil that was ever made but I think maybe I just have a more waterly waterline than some people b/c I know girls who can wear pencil on their waterline and have it last quite a while.
However, I prefer Kohl types for pencil liners on the waterline, I always reach for my MAC's Smolder. However for intensity and the smoothness of gliding on, nothing can top Stila Eye Kajal, it has really really intense color pay off and glides on like butter... but it's important not to apply it thickly or apply more than one layer b/c the creaminess of it will backfire on you. But one swipe is plenty plenty plenty.

ETA - oh and I forgot to add, for anything you use, always set the lower lash line w/ powder. I always prime and then powder that area if I'm doing something on my waterline. That is what will stop the smudging.

Thanks for such a detailed reply! but I've tried using my MAC fluidline to line my waterline but I kept on getting it into my eye which transferred onto my contacts...which wasn't that great. Will the powder from the loose kohl ones transfer into my eyes too and irritate them?

I use the Loreal liner that Carol mentioned and sometimes little specks of it get on my contacts, but its pretty minimal in my experience. I'm usually pretty careful and try not to put it on too thick or else it will transfer to your eye. I also line close to the lashes to avoid getting anything in my eye....like I don't line the whole waterline. I don't know if that made sense haha. Hopefully that was helpful!

BTW Carol, I love reading your replies in the makeup section! They are super informative!

The reason it's transferring it to your contacts is b/c you're applying too close to the eyeball edge of the waterline ( I don't know how else to describe it). You need to leave a tiny bit of space from that edge especially if you apply it while pulling your waterline down to apply the liner. Once you stop pulling on it, it'll roll back a little and thus cause the transfer. This is true for any type of eyeliner. You might get a few specks in your eye for the loose kohl liners but they're safe and approved for the use on the waterline/eye (unlike Fluidlines) so the they won't cause any irritation. However I did find that if I messed up and got kind of small chunk of powder in my eye, the Guerlain did not irritate me at all while the Loreal one made my eyes water just a bit. I think I read reviews where other people mentioned it as well, but it's not a big deal for me. HTH

Hm... I looked on the sephora website and right now they have the Geurlain Terracotta Khol Kajal Intense Indian Khol Liner (whew! what a long name!) for limited edition.

How does this compare to their loose kohl powder?

I love UD's 24/7 liners too but it lasts like 20 minutes on my waterline I do love it for regular lining though!

I was considering between that one and the loose kohl one too but the loose kohl gives more of a smoldering effect and this one is just a flat intense black. They say limited edition but it has been limited edition for a really long time now! I guess they still haven't sold out of the stock they got like a year ago I can't speak about the lasting power for this since I haven't actually tried it out. You can try makeupalley for reviews.

MUA seems to be raving the loose kohl a lot more, and I checked a couple drug stores and I don't think we have the L'oreal H.I.P. one here in Canada. !! Lame. What about the MUFE eyeliner? I read reviews that it lasts pretty long.

Carol,

What is the "Eastern" method of applying it?

Also, I have never lined the top waterline, is there a way to do it? Is it easy? I would love to try it because I am sure it really lines the eyes.

It's described in the Guerlain pamphlet thing included w/ the product. It's kind of scary looking but it doesn't hurt at all and it's really fast. It involves placing the applicator on your lower waterline and closing your eyes and pulling the applicator through. It's not something you can do with any other type of eyeliner/applicator though, only w/ the Guerlain or Loreal loose powder type of applicators and products.

To line the top waterline (this is called tight lining btw), just tilt your head back a bit, pull your eyelid up and just run whatever eyeliner you're using along the waterline, no different from lining your lower waterline and yes, it really does make a difference! When I'm doing that no make up look, I tight line rather than do the regular eyeliner and it enhances the eye naturally.

OMG! Thanks for all that info.

I just picked up some the Loreal kohl eyeliner (after reading this thread ) so I can give it a try. I would def spend the money on the Guerlain, but I will give this a try first and see what I think.

I will try both ways and see which one works for me!

no prob you can youtube videos on the guerlain or loreal loose kohls to see people applying it the "eastern" way. It's quite tricky at first but once you get it down it's a lifesaver in its ability to save time in lining both the top and lower waterline at once!

I have blue eyes and what works to make my eyes pop is brown or a copper color. I am not sure what most MUAs use, but I think that color combo looks really nice.

Oh and I tried the Loreal kohl liner today and ZOMG!!! It looked soooo good! The eastern way was pretty simple, but I may need some more practice before I get it 100%.

^ yay, glad to hear you liked it!!

and Betsy, you're lucky you have blue eyes! brown eyes are the hardest in making them pop Blue can pop with lots of different colors but like Sarah said, coppers/corals/peach work the best for making your eyes totally pop and this has everything to do w/ the color spectrum. If you look on the color wheel, blue's complementary (or contrasting) color is orange, so anything with an orange undertone will make your eyes pop the most.

If you look on the color wheel, find the shade of your eyes and look at the color directly opposite of it. That color is what compliments or contrasts against your eye the most and makes it stand out more than any other color. There are lots of other color wheel rules you can apply getting into color triads and all sorts of things. I don't know everything but I remember watching a video where the person was talking about the same concept I was talking about and he goes really into detail so if you want to learn more, you can try watching the video he has on color.. let me see if I can find it for you

okay found it

Wow! Thanku so much for all your helps! I watched the video...even the part 2 and it was very helpful, too. Im going to watch the video a few more times. I'll try some coppers, corals, peaches on my eyes and see if that helps. Cant wait! It was hard to find my color of blue on the colorwheel, b/c my eyes are almost a grayish blue. (not an intense bright blue or light blue) Im just stuck somewhere in between, lol. (Thats why I say they are boring) Thanku so much for taking the time to help me! Im off to watch some more videos!

I use Urban Decay's 24/7
it only fades away when I start rubbing my eyes.

So does this mean with brown eyes, I should try blue eyeliner?
I've tried it once or twice and it really made my eyes brighter
