Gel nails??

Hey ladies...I've been considering getting gel nails for quite a while but am scared because the last time I had fake nails, the technician used this horrible electric sander to make my natural nails rough and paper thin before applying the acrylic. He also tore up my cuticles and they got infected Obviously I need to find a better nail place, but do they have to file down your nails in order to apply the gel ones too, or is that just for acrylic?
I have a terrible habit of biting my nails down to practically nothing and I feel like getting fake nails is the only thing that will get me to stop

im no nail expert, but I think its best for it to be filed down so the acrylic or whatever they put on there sticks better. and a good manicure is a MUST if your getting your nails done.

I also have thin nails so i dont like them sanded down too much, im sensitive! maybe ur nail tech sucks at cutting cuticles. i suggest going to another place.

another suggestion, if you can, grow out our own natural nails. THEN, get an overlay (instead of a fake nail glued on top of ur own). That way, your nails wont break/feel as brittle. and IMO, i think its healthier for your nails.

well, nothing beats just a natural nail, but if your nails are thin, and u CAn grow them to a decent length, get an overlay!

HTH..sorta?

I get the gel and you do need to file down, however from my experience (and I have an excellent nail tech) you need to find someone who can go gel really good. I have gone to places where its thickish and terrible.
The gel has been much healthier for my nails too, I recently had the tip grow out and soaked off the gel my nails didnt break and were all even. I love gel I will always use that. Much prettier and more durable IMO also

Do you have to file down a lot? I'm so scared of that...And I have no clue how to find a good nail tech! At every nail salon around me, they just barely speak English

i've had LCN gel nails for a few years now and absolutely LOVE them. the 1st time i went in, she had to lightly buff my nails, but she did it with a regular buffer, not a power tool

i don't recommend getting gels done at one of those walk-in "nail salons". what you usually get at those places is most likely acrylic w/ a gel overlay - NOT real gels. i get mine done at a professional salon/spa and the tech i see gets training regularly & is up on new techinques. my nails' appearance have totally improved since i started going to her!

i bite my nails too getting fake nails is what i do when i want my nails to grow out!! once they grow out underneath i take the fake nails off and get manicures until i get stressed out and end up biting my nails again!! then i go through the whole process again!!

i have had gel nails and love them!! for me though, i get acrylic because i am so hard on my nails and gel nails seem to break easier and are not as strong as acrylics IMO!! i usually will end up still putting my nails in my mouth and the acrylics are harder to "bite" off

i agree that you need to find a better nail tech who knows what they are doing with gel or acrylic nails for sure!!!!

I have no idea how to go about finding a trustworthy salon. I feel like all the ones around me are sketchy. I need to figure this out though because I have some really important events coming up and I simply CANNOT have these nasty ragged little stubs

Your nails to not need to be 'filed down' for either gel nor acrylic. It should be buffed with fine grit file or buffer, so that there is no shine to the nail. Cuticles should be pushed back and not cut. I would stay away from those McNails chop shops at all cost.

I have been doing gel for years. When I first got them, the girl put a tip to make them longer. Gradually, because the gel nourishes the nail, the tip grew on its own.

If your nails are short, she will add tips. The first time is always the longest and most expensive.
So after she applies the tip, she'll buff it-painless. The cuticles are not pushed down the way they are during a manicure. They buff when she buffs the nail.

Several coats of gel are applied and you put your hand in a sort of incubater to set the gel.
She will file the tip down to your specified size.
Another coat of gel. Color and you are set.

They are awesome-but keep in mind, they need to be refilled every 3 weeks. Hope this helps.

I have an acrylic overlay and my tech didn't file my nails down at all. She just buffed the top to get the shine off (like Geebs said).

I hope everything works out well for you tomorrow! Can't wait to see your pretty nails.

Here they are! I got acrylic tips put on the very ends of my nails to give them a bit of length (my real nails are about half this size...) with gel overlay on top. I'm really happy with them!

Emily those are pretty I'm glad that worked out for you. I had a horrible habit of biting my nails too but I recently stopped because I started painting my nails and applying nail art. (But I bit my thumb nail due to finals stress >.<)

I wish there were before pics to compare

Thanks! You should get gels too, I have not been tempted to bite them at all since they aren't my real nails (not logical, I know). I would be too embarrassed to show my nails before Just picture VERY short and ratty

Those do look really nice Emily!

I too have gels, have had "nails" for nearly 20 years! Never in all those years have I had any problems, except for popping a nail off here and there!!

Glad you like them!

I have been threatening my 13 year old son with getting his done, he has like no nails as he eats them LOL

They look great!!

I used to bit my nails real bad and I found Gels really worked for me and I think they looked better than acrylic.
