Spiral Perm - perms in general

I'm an 80s kid so therefore, like a lot of women from my generation, I have a deep fear of perms these days. I have been straightening my hair for the last 10+ years. My hair have naturally big unequal waves (impossible to make it look decent natural).

So anyway, I did have a spiral perm many many years ago and it was a breeze to take care of but I wouldn't want a tight perm like that again but I do like spiral curls.

So how are perms these days? Can you get loose small waves or loose spirals without fearing looking like your neighbors poodle? Does anyone even get perms anymore? I'm just sick of spending three hours drying and straightening my hair every time I wash it.

Any opinions?

Also, is it possible to get a perm that looks like this? Or can that only be achieved with an iron/rollers?

I currently have a body wave. I have always had straight, fine hair that is always lacking in volume. Once it got below my shoulders, there was so much weight that it was always flat no matter what I would try. So I got a body wave a while back, and it has treated me pretty good so far. She used the biggest rods that the salon had, so it's more like little waves than curls. The body wave has allowed my hair to hold curl/body a LOT better. Normally I just dry my hair and put it up in hot rollers while I do my makeup and get ready. (I leave them in about 20 min) This gives me big spirals if I use the medium/small rollers or big loose curls if I use the large rollers... Other days I will just let it air dry or blow dry it straight.

I don't think it looks very good when I just let it air dry because the waves aren't defined enough for it to look good IMO. I would assume it would look better on you since your hair already has some natural body.

I'm not sure if that helped any since we have different hair types, but you can definitely get a perm without looking like a poodle

I had a body wave when I was about 15/16 that was 15 years ago. I have very thin, flat hair that doesn't hold a curl. I had it cut to just below my shoulders right before the body wave. I liked it while it lasted. It honestly didn't last long at all in my hair, probably not even a year. The waves were nice but as time went on [like Rachel said] they weren't define enough. They still looked good IMO but I liked it best the first three months. I wish I had pictures on my computer to post.

If I were you I'd talk to the people at the salon about it. They might have something specific they can do for you. Let us know what you decide to do.

I'm actually getting my color done tomorrow so I will definitely ask my stylist but wanted to know a bit more before I go in.

By the way, I have super thick hair but not coarse. I've had it bleached quite a bit for a couple years but haven't done so in almost a year (only had dark semi-permanent color in it since).

Back in the day, my hair would hold a perm until it actually grew out! I had a perm once and it was super tight and horrible and then I had it bleached (yeah, I know) but that loosened the perm to a perfect wave!

Unless your hair is short, that bleached hair is still there. It may be under another color, but the damage is there. Bleach 100000000000000% damages hair, no if and or BUTS about it. You can not perm over that. Rant over!

Agree. I never reccommend two chemical services on one head.. but especially not over bleach.

You guys are right. I guess I thought because I've been really good to my hair in the last year (no bleach, lots of trims, treatments, etc.) that it might be okay but you're right, the bleached hair is still there. So I guess it'll have to wait another couple years.

But I am still curious about the wave Misha Barton has in that picture. Can that actually be achieved with a perm? Since if I ever do get a perm one day, that's what I would want.

I know about your hair woes in the past and yes I think you should just give it a break for a while.

As for Misha's hair. That's definately NOT a perm, and I don't think that look is achievable with a perm. That's the biggest misconception about perms lately IMO is that people look at celebs and think they can get those looks like a perm and no styling. You'll definately need to style it that way, with or without a perm.

Yes, I know Misha's in not a perm and I actually know how to do it with my flat iron, it's just a pain in the butt, hence the thought of a perm.

But yes, giving my hair a break is the best idea for now. It is blue-black (demi-permanent) and finally nice and shiny, and I do love it so I should just stop messing with it!!

I just got back from vacation in Hong Kong. I tried the Japanese ceramic perm while I was there. My hair is more wavy than curly. My hair felt so soft after too. It took like 4 hours though.

I wouldn't do it... I think you have really nice hair the way it is now, and I would worry that it would look frizzy and too pouffy.
