Spray tan advice

Obviously I don't know much about tanning but I plan to allow my daughter to get a spray tan for prom this month. I do know that it is imperative that she use a scrub in the days before she gets sprayed. Also she needs to be careful about getting it on her hands. Other than that I am lost. What should we expect? How do we avoid orange skin? Are there things I need to buy in advance? Are there things I SHOULD NOT buy? (I know from a few episodes of Sunset Tan that they are to push products lol) I suspect a black person walking into a tanning salon has sucker written all over her face.

I've gotten a few spray tans in my day. But I'm not sure if your allowing your daughter to get an air brush tan (what I recommend) or if she going to a booth (bad bad bad bad bad)? Well either way like you said make sure she exfoliates her skin prior to the tan, make sure she doesn't shave the day of the tan, make sure she gets the tan at least 2 days in advance otherwise it is kinda pointless because it gets better as time goes on. Do not shower that day after the spray tan. No need for additional products. Basic lotion from a drugstore extends the life of the tan, which typically lasts 5-7 days. As for getting orange, depends on if she is going to a booth or an airbrush. A booth, there isn't really control. An airbrush...they usually pick which color is right for your skin to avoid the orange factor.

Oh yeah, and make sure she wears very loose clothing to the tanning place because when she gets dressed she doesn't want her tan to get on her clothes or rub off; it is very prone to coming off during the first 5 hrs of receiving it. ANNND, to avoid getting the tan on hands and feet, they give you this special lotion that makes it so the tan doesn't stay there (at least every tan I have received )

Thanks that is helpful. I didn't know about the varieties of spray tans but I suspected there were some. Is a mystic tan the booth kind? That's one that I remember. Is airbrush more expensive?

yes, mystic tan is the booth. when i did it, i felt very claustrophobic, and my tan came out unevenly. my face got really dark too.

i'm with skyy on this one, i prefer the airbrush. airbrush tan is literally, someone spraying the tan on you with an airbrush. you can wear an old bikini that you don't care about anymore, or you can wear nothing...whatever you're comfortable with. the place i went to had disposable underwear...i made the mistake of not rolling it down (i'm short and have a short torso so there was a "tan line" from the disposable underwear that came up above my bathing suit

airbrushing is more expensive than the mystic tan, but imo, it comes out soo much better. it comes out a lot more even because the person doing the airbrushing can make some areas lighter and some areas darker as needed.

oh god, this is a little off topic but i had a horrible mystic tan experience haha. first they made me watch a 10 min video about how to do it properly. Then i got to pick which "level" of tan-ness i wanted... 1, 2, or 3. I chose 2.

after that, i went into the room, did all the prep they taught me (lotion on the hands, etc.) and got in the booth. well they tell you that the spray stuff passes up and down your body 3 times on each side... so I was standing there facing it, held my breath, let it spray me, then got confused. i didn't feel it go up and down 3 times, so i stood there for a minute and waited. it sprayed me again, only that spray was supposed to go on my back! i hadn't turned around because the 3-times thing totally confused me! The booth sprayer stopped so i got out and was so mad. when the girl working there asked how it went, i told her my situation about how i didn't get my back. luckily, she let me go back in for free and double-spray my back. Now, since the highest level of darkness is a 3, i got double sprayed with a 2 on each side, so my level became a FOUR! I was SO DARK. I actually liked how it looked though ahha except when it started fading off. i looked diseased and all patchy.

Anyways that's my story... tell her to make sure she turns around hhaha. also, make sure she wipes herself all over after it's done (they give you a towel). I had some drip marks down one of my legs because i missed wiping the stuff off properly. it faded the darker i became, but still it didn't look good in the beginning.

Also though, i don't really recommend the mystic tan. at the time, i didn't know that it was bad for you. afterwards i found out how horrible it is and how many tanning places have banned them because they are really bad for your lungs. it is tough for people to hold their breath in there, and all of the chemicals do end up in your lungs.

Yes, OP. Mystic tans are BAD news! IMO of course. I would highly recommend getting an airbrush. My salon does them for 40 dollars, I live in Oregon though.

I just bought the luminess airbrush tanning system... haven't gotten it in the mail today. I guess I'll have to have someone spray my back but I'm super excited about it! I hope it works as well as the ones in the tanning places do!

Agree with everyone else... definitely airbrush instead of mystic. I, too, was freaked out and couldn't hold my breath the entire time and felt like those chemicals were getting in my lungs... it freaked me out. Airbrush ftw!

LOL Dana, there is totally a Friends episode where this happened to Ross. If you haven't seen it yet, it sounds like you should.

I had bad luck with mystic tanning also. But I have been using a California Tan autobronzer (which is similar to Mystic) for the past year and I have never had a problem with it. We don't have any airbrush tanning salons here so I haven't tried it.

You all have taught me a lot. Thank you so much! We will be going with the airbrush tan. As far as shaving, do you mean not shaving immediately before or after the airbrush day?

Try not to shave that day of (before the tan), but it is recommended to avoid taking a shower at least 6-12 hours after the tan. I personally don't shower until the next day

I definitely agree with you skyy, I remember the time when I go in tanning salon, and they will recommend that avoid taking to shower at the given time. If you want to become more effective follow their instruction, and you will see the perfect result.

She got the airbrush Thursday and it was a success. They were totally unhelpful on the phone. (At nearly every shop. It was like an industry of morons. Why do people answer the phone if they don't understand the services or dont know how to explain them?) She got the dark for $30. I just realized know we didnt tip. Was I supposed to? She was on to the next person so would have been a production. Oh and this is funny. She didnt shower Friday and when she was getting her pedi the colirbcame of in the tub and she was a little two-toned.

Prom is tonight. I hope we have everything.

Ugh, I wonder the same thing about tipping them! :/ I did once when I paid with a credit card and there was a space for a tip, but the last time I did it, I went to a new place and paid with a CC and there was no space for a tip, plus I didn't have cash.

I did Mystic once and NEVER again. I couldn't hold my breath through it either and ended up inhaling some of it in. That was some years back when it first came out. Till this day I swear my breathing hasn't been the same. The tan itself came out as a nice color but real streaky. I haven't tried airbrush but if I were to "fake bake" again, that's the way I'd go.

I love Loreal tan in a can, lol. I exfoliate at home in the shower, wrap my hair in a towel, don a pair of rubber gloves, and go to town. I use the same formula on my face and body, and I have never had an unnatural looking result. It's cheap, and I have total control of the outcome...and it looks a heck of a lot more natural than Mystic Tan.
