A question to TAZ users...

Need serious help guys....

I used Avene Diacneal for almost a year with no problems and then I started breaking out. I switched to TAZ from alldaychemists about 4 months ago and my skin just got worse.

My skin has never looked this bad and I am so frustrated. This whole thing started since I started working as an rn but I can't switch careers just to make it stop

It started with one pimple after the other, but now it's like 3 huge pimples after 3 huge ones. I am using DIM, too, just incase it's hormonal. Been using it for 5 months now.

I am so tempted to use BP products (proactive, obagi clenziderm MD). I have stopped using these products from the time I have read that they are pro-aging.

My current routine is:
PM:
Purpose facial wash
Clinique toner
Tazret (tazorac gel 0.05%)

AM:
purpose wash
skinceuticals AOX 20
shisheido sunblock spf 55

Now my questions is....could I use BP with tazorac? Or do I need to stop tazorac while I am using BP for the meantime. I really want to use BP just to clear my skin out. I get so stressed just looking at myself in the mirror now

I know that TAZORAC has the tendency to purge the skin so I don't know if I should just stick with it or not. But really, me no happy at all...

Any help? Thanks a lot!

Would you consider taking birth control or is that not an option for you? Also if you do starting taking bcp, I read you shouldn't take DIM at the same time (would do more research on this tho)

For me benzoyl peroxide caused what is happening to you now (when I was on the acne.org reg, I literally had a new huge pimple every couple of days & I'm still trying to get rid of all the scars it caused). Now I'm using Diacneal and I'm on Loestrin 24, which saved my skin; hopefeully that doesn't change. .. If bp works for you, I'd probably use it (I've also read time & time again that bp is pro-aging & I was just reading on MUA a woman saying that she's used bp for over 20 years & she hasn't noticed anything
Here's a link to ppl arguing the effects of bp: http://makeupalley.com/m_105735581

Concerning whether you can use bp & taz at the same time (most ppl suggest bp in morning & taz at night):
Here's some links with your same question:
http://makeupalley.com/m_106290415
http://makeupalley.com/m_102809910

Also, When you started breaking out, did you change anything in your routine (maybe the DIM?)

If the BP, doesn't work for you, I suggest adding a BHA (I use Paula Choice's 2% Liquid) before your serum in the morning

I tried using TAZ but it made my face really raw. I switched over to Retin-A Micro which I used for 6 months and now just using the regular Retin-A. When I first started Retin-A I purged for months I've been on it now 7 months and my skin is JUST now looking good. You really have to stick to these products and realize your skin is going to look worse before it looks better.

I hate to say it, because there's not much you can do, and nothing topical- but a few pimples more or less big and probably painful too sounds like hormone- and/or stress- related. If you started a new job I'd suspect stress.

Stick with the taz for now. Spot treat the pimples with it, for example in am too. It helps them heal.

Try spot treating with salicylic acid.

This worked for me, I don't know if you recall me saying my skin started to suck. I just use Cetaphil antibacterial bar "soap" it's for face too. I have no breakouts in 2 weeks after a month of using this product. I literally don't use anything else, no toners... I put on Origins a perfect world skin guardian at night when I remember.

My daughter uses this, almost stopped - it took her skin about 6 months to what I'd call "adjust" to Taz. She absolutely hated it. It was a deep hate.

When she eventually stopped breaking out, she started peeling big time...senior year, not good. The peeling with her was endless, maybe 5 months...she couldn't even apply makeup due to the flaking (regardless of moisturizer). Very hard time for her - she'll tell you now though it was worth it.

Are you seeing a Derm? Just curious, you're using a toner, with taz, you don't need that, I wouldn't use that product while using Taz. Jenn would know the answer to that but, my daughter's derm is actually very much against toners. (not sure why though) My daughter's doctor made it clear to her she was only to wash her face with a mild cleanser while using this product and a moisturizer/sunscreen. Thats it.

Maybe you're just adding too much to the mix.
Her skin looks fabulous now btw.

^yes, you dont want to keep adding things to the mix. and as someone else mentioned, for many products, you need to give your skin time to adjust. i also use tretinoin, which is similar, and my face took a few months to totally adjust, and even so, sometimes its too drying with the changing of the seasons and such. oral contraceptives are also very helpful, as someone else mentioned, if that is an option. we all know its frustrating and you want to do everything you can to stop breaking out if it just started all the sudden, it could also be a bacterial infection, in which case you'd want to see your derm. skin problems are so tricky b/c they're different for everyone. hope it gets better soon!

Oh wow, thanks for the advice you guys.

I am currently using birth control pills, so should I stop the DIM?

It's hard covering my zits with make-up... cakes cause of all the peeling and my face looks even nastier.

I will stick to TAZ, as everybody suggested. It will be hard, but I will ditch the toner, too.

Hopefully my skin recovers before summer. (oh please, please....)

From what I have read you should not take DIM with birth control, it may reduces it's effectiveness.

I just recently stopped peeling when using Retin-A and I started on it Aug 15, 2009. One thing that I was doing that contributed to the peeling was applying it immediately after washing my face. You should wait 20-30 minutes after washing your face to apply it. You can also try using a warm washcloth in the morning and lightly exfoliating the dry skin off. I also switched moisturizers, because the one the derm recommend was doing nothing for me. I now use a few drops of a rosehip seed oil/jojoba oil blend on my damp skin after washing my face. I haven't had a flake of dry skin since

for mine (tretinoin) i wash, wait 30 min, then put the cream on. i moisturize after where needed. i think the cream needs to go on clean, dry skin to work best.

No, don't moisturize before using TAZ. In the evening...wash face, wait 20-30 minutes, apply TAZ. I only apply moisturizer in the morning after washing my face.

That is so sad and so unnecessary. I still can't comprehend why most derms don't know how to ease into using retinoids. The peeling can really easily be avoided by going slow.

Easing in then would be using like a teeny tiny drop of taz and a big glop of Regenerist serum mixed together. Probably even then putting moisturizer on top after twenty minutes. Or SCT (short contact therapy): leaving the taz on for only ten seconds. You can really start in a way that does not make you peel, it is just a question of finding the lowest concentration. (And also adjusting the rest of the routine, like using the most gentle cleanser etc)
