Growing Hair Long ~ Tips & Suggestions?

So, recently I decided to grow my hair out. I would like to get down to the middle of my back, I haven't been that long since like 8th grade...

Anyway, I know the basics like eating lots of fruits & veggies, milk, taking veeetamins, regular trims, etc...

But I am looking for some other stuff I may not know about. Hair treatments (like does Mane & Tail S&C really work???) I've heard that braiding hair helps it to grow long, and keeping it covered from the sun, blah....blah. I've also heard that scalp stimulation, ie. massages, brushing, etc will hekp hair to grow more quickly.

Also what about this stuff that hair has a natural threshold at which it slows down in growth? Is this true, and if so is there anything I can do to speed the growth back up?

Right now, my hair is a little above shoulder length. I'm wondering what to expect as a reasonable length of time before my hair is at my goal length.

I appreciate any insight and tips! And I am pretty much willing to try anything.

I would like to know more about this too. Mine grows super fast but it seems every time I try to grow my hair, it pretty much stops just past my bra strap in the back. Never had my hair down to my waist even though I tried...

As for the brushing, my understanding is that it promotes a healthy scalp and helps to spread your natural oils through the length of your hair, making it healthier/shinier. It does not make it grow faster but healthy hair has less breakage which basically halts growth. Just make sure that you use a very good quality brush or you may end up causing more damage.

Honestly I don't believe any of that crap about doing this or that to make your hair grow. Everybody's hair grows at its own rate. If your hair grows at an average rate it will probably take about a year to get down to the middle of your back from where it is now. Just do what you normally do to your hair and I would only trim it if the ends look really gross and just take the very ends off and no more. Trimming it regularly does not make it grow faster.

I don't think anything will make it grow faster but if you keep it healthy condition, you wo'nt need to trim as often, so it can get longer, faster. My friend highlights her hair a lot, blowdries it, flatirons it, so it starts breaking 2 months after a trim. As a result, it never grows. She has been "Growing out" her hair for 2 years, and it looks the same.

Like lmspag said, stop cutting your hair so much, and trim it when it looks gross at the ends.

Minnie, I have heard that some people's hair just doesn't grow as long as others'. Maybe some hairstylists can confirm if this is true.

As someone who just a few years ago had hair to her butt, I couldn't agree more. I did nothing special. I had it cut to right above boob length when I was 17 and just didn't cut it, not even for a trim.

Hair grows at the root so the only thing trimming does is helps it look healthier at the ends and makes it take a bit longer to get as long as you want since you're taking some of it off. As far as reaching it's growth point, that did happen to me, for years it was at the same length, just didn't get any longer. But that might have to do with breakage considering I didn't get any trims. If I grew my hair out like that again, I wouldn't do anything differently. If I got trims it would have stayed shorter then it did since I'd been cutting it every so often.

Just keep eating healthy for your over all heath and don't cut your hair. Lynne knows her stuff, mine took about a year to get to the length you want. So all you can do is give it time. Before you know it you'll be thinking of how fast it got so long, lol.

Wow, a year is not so bad at all. I was thinking it was going to take a hell of a lot longer than that. I'm pretty anal about haircuts though, I guess I will have to try and get passed that. The nice thing is that my curly hair tends to hide damage and about 2 months ago I died my hair close to my natural color with no highlights, so I won't be dying it again anytime soon.

I don't brush my hair, ever. I mean, ever so often I will brush it out. But that's something that happens maybe six times a year. Hopefully that helps.

I'm interested in hearing more from other people!!

i think my hair grew from chin length to far below the middle of my back in about two years. i got as less trims as possible (only like three ) and didn't do anything special...except for blow drying, straightening and brushing it daily. it's amazing it's this long and actually looking healthy, too, really.

I agree entirely. I just recently cut my hair that was to my lower back and did absolutely nothing to it. I rarely, if ever, cut it. Ate anything i wanted (the bod proves this one ) lol...and flat ironed/blow dried and dyed/highlighted it regularly. My hair is extremely strong and can withstand alot! Also it grows like weeds, so cutting 3.5 inches off this past month was nothing seeing it will be back to its previous length in about a couple months. Everyones hair is very different.

Mine was bra length too and I was hoping I could make it grow till my butt. What I usually do is good conditioner only and eating lots of fruits and vegetables to make it healthy as well.

I pulled a Britney Spears once and it took about 4 years for my hair to grown out to where it is now, from completely shaved. My hairs sits about 6 inches below the bottom of my bra now (almost to the small of my back). It hit it's limit though and won't grow any further. I trim it only about every 4-6 months, when it really needs it. It was past my butt in length when I shaved it off.

just don't do anything . I didn't know people put in so much thought to growing out hair I know my friend took supplements that supposedly helped but I don't know, I think it would have been the same if she didn't take it. I just don't do anything to mine, I haven't even gone in for a trim in like 6+ months and it's gotten really long. My goal is to grow it til a little past my boobs. It's almost there.

Not kidding. Because I was a rebellious teen. My parents told me one day to never do anything stupid like shave my head. So I did it the very next day. Then they sent me to a private christian school. My poor parents.

Now I won't cut my hair for anything. I love my long hair.

Amber I don't believe you. I need pics

This is so lame. My hair refuses to grow past the length it is now. It grows just enough for me to trim it off again.

My hair only grows when I am preggo.

That's so funny...the things we do to our parents during our rebellious adolescent years...

This is me, I committ to growing it out and at some point I get sick of it so I chop it all off. My hair was pretty damn close to where I wanted it a couple years ago until I hacked it off:

I still really regret it...I am HOPING I don't do the same thing again.

Please dig up those pics someday. I would love to see them!

I have been trying to grow out my hair for years now. I'm having a really hard time because my hair keeps breaking. I quit putting it in a ponytail over a year ago. I do blowdry and straighten it, but only a couple times a week. It's so frustrating because I used to have it really long.

That's awesome! It took me 2 1/2 years to get it from shaved when my oldest was born, to a couple inches below my shoulders after my youngest was born. (no idea if it grew faster when I was preggo or not). It has now been 6 months since I last cut mine, and its only like 2 1/2 inches long . Its taking FOREVER, so I think I'll be cutting it off again. Its just easier, and it looks like shit from about an inch longer than it is, to my shoulders, which at this rate is another 3 years away. I haven't the patience for that right now. I would love it to be down to the middle of my back though. le sigh.

Hair grows a 1/4 of an inch to 1/2 an inch a month.

Calculate how much length you want vs how many months and viola! There you are!

I would only get trims so your ends don't split and cause you to get more cut off later because it's split up your hairshaft.

Good luck!

You don't have to do anything special except trim away dead ends every couple of months.

I always had waist length hair, so when I graduated high school I chopped it all off to this:

16 months later it was this length:

And I was cutting regularly and transistioning to blonde(will never do that again ) - so it shouldn't take you too long to get it where you want it. It will seem like it isn't growing and then one day you will wake up and go "when did my hair get so long?!" My hair is down to the small of my back now and I will never cut it short again.

Jess, the short cut still really flattered your face shape. It looks like you have a round shape like me so when your hair gets about that shoulder length it starts to make your face look chubbier than it really is. Do you agree with that? I feel that way, and I think that's when I decide to chop again because I forget that giving it a little more time to get a little longer and it balances things out again. Does that make sense, at all??

Totally. While I was growing it out I made sure to keep lots of shorter layers in the front, because once those pieces hit the bottom of my chin they made my face look chubby. To finally grow those out I had to clip them back or wear a headband every day.
