It's a salon service. Not something you purchase in a drug store.

I believe it's around 300 or so? I've never had it done though.

I would definately call the high end salons in your area to discuss this service and have a consultation.

I've had both the Keratin and the Japanese straightening done in the past. Japanese was very harsh on my hair, I had quite a bit of breakage. The Keratin wasn't as harsh, but it didn't seem to work as well. I paid $400 for Japanese and a little less for Keratin. I've actually started using the Wen shampoo and that takes care of my frizz. It's expensive but WAY less than the chemical treatments.

I had the Japanese straighening done years ago. For me it only lasted about 3 months or so. The results were great. My hair was so smooth but then I heard it actually dries your hair our pretty badly so I never got it done again.

It's this special shampoo that they sell on QVC. Some people don't like it, but I've had good luck with it. Totally takes the frizz out of my hair. If you get it, make sure you follow the instructions, it's not like normal shampoo.

you can do it yourself. you can buy kits on ebay. i think you need a super hot flat iron. try asking on the MUA hair board, there's several people who do it there.

If you plan on trying Wen, buy the fig one. It works wonders on dry hair! You also might want to try the fig re-moist hydrating mask.

OMG!! This is too funny! I saw the infomercial for WEN the other night - its that guy with the longish blonde hair right?? I really wanted to try it! Im glad you say its good stuff - I am excited to try it now!!

I had the BKT done once. I really liked it, it was just so expensive!! Mine was about $350. I think most salons did it now. I got it done June 2009. Heres how it worked:

First they wash your hair with sulfate free shampoo and do not condition. Then they blow dry your hair dry. Then they spray the Keratin solution in your hair, blow dry again and then small section by section flat iron your hair with a 400 degree iron. Then you cannot wash your hair for 2 days. And you are not supposed to put your hair up or behind your ears or really do anything with it until after you wash it 2 days later. If you do, you may get a kink in your hair that wont come out (thats what they told me).

So for the first 2 months maybe my hair was super straight!! I have curly hair that tends to frizz. After the treatment, I could let my hair air dry and it would be straight on its own, no frizz! I was amazed! Of course I would flat iron a few pieces bc I am a perfectionist.

Little by little, I felt it wearing off, but now its been 6 months and I still see the effects - my hair will curl now if I dont blow dry straight, but it doesnt have as much frizz. Also, when I blow dry (before I flat iron) my hair isnt crazy like it used to always be right after a blow dry before the BKT.

I actually liked it better as it wore off bc i could wear my hair curly (much less frizz) after it started to wash out. My only sad part was the first month or 2 I couldnt wear my hair curly if i wanted. No matter how much i scrunched and moussed and gelled, it stayed straight - but that was pretty cool in itself. My hair would never NOT curl on its own!!

I would def. do it again - thinking I might do it around June again. I think once a year its OK to spend that amoutn of $$ Also, I think its is ideal for the summer months when you want to get out of the pool or ocean and let your hair air dry and not look like a phsyco!!

I would not recommend doing it at home. You can probably mess is up easily, unless you have a very skilled person helping you.

Also - a big caution with this is a lot of formulas contain formaldahyde (spelling?) which is a carcenogen. You should be very careful to make sure you ask that it does not contain this harmful ingredient.

Also - one more thing - when you get it done you CANNOT use just any shampoo./conditioner. From then on, you have to use Sulfate free - meaning you always have to read the ingredients on the back and it cannot have "sodium chloride". It is actually good to use these sulfate free products anyways, supposedly the sodium chloride strips your hair.

I use SILKY SEXY HAIR by Sexy Hair for Course hair (the fine hair one has sodium chlordie for some reason)

Wow, that was long!!!!!!

LOL. I say try it!! It washes out gradually so you dont have a weird growing out phase that Ive heard happens with the Japenese treatment.

And NO damage at all!! Its actually good for your hair (or so they say!) cuz the Keratin conditions it. I can say I had No damage and the hair shaft feels very smooth and soft!

are you KIDDING me?! You want to get get this done with you already get relaxers?! This is a huuuuuuge no no; two chemicals. Expecially mixed with a relaxer. That's a one way ticket to having to hair left at all. With a relaxer, you shouldn't have that much frizz anyway ... that's the point of getting a relaxer ... no curl, less frizz.

wow thanks Trishy711 for that long explanation.....
I think I should go to the salon to get it done, but its just so costly$$$$$$.

I heard that this treatment was god for relaxed hair, because its like a conditioner....Im have very course, dry, brittle hair, i find my hair is frizzer than ever even with the relaxer treatments. The relaxer just straightins out my kink (at bit) thats about it...it doesnt make my hair straight or less frizzy.

On one of the videos online it shows a mixed(half black/white) girl with my kind of hair getting it done, and it said that it lasts longer on hair that has been relaxed, is that true?

A conditioner does not have the ability to make hair straight. Otherwise you hair would be magically straight every time you condition. Keratin is what your hair is made out of. It's a hard solid. It is only good to a point. Example, my hair is platinum blonde. When I use a keratin based conditioner for too long my hair is super super brittle because since keratin is hard and my hair is very very dry .. it won't make it soft ... it will make it brittle.

There are chemicals in a keratin "straightener". You can't make a change on the hair like this without a chemical. If you do it make sure you are SUPER SURE what chemicals are in your relaxer and what chemicals are in your keratin treatment. Mixing these two can be DEVASTATING if you're mixing two chemicals that do not get along with eachother.

I agree wth nakedmosher, it may be bad to mix a BKT and relaxer, however, I know this treatment is successfully done on a lot of black women's hair, so there must be a solution - def. consult with your hair professional.

Relaxer subject aside (you should def. check with your hairdresser on that), If you hair is dry and brittle I think you will love the BKT. Although there must be some sort of chemical (or several) to make it actually work, I can vouch that (at least in the one I got done), it did not damage my hair AT ALL. Not a bit. It smoothed the hair shaft and honestly makes your hair look longer (bc its stretched out so flat!!) and healthier. And thats coming from someone who has been getting blonde highlights every 3 months for the past 6 years. My hair is damaged to begin with, its not thick, but it does have texture since its naturally curly. I have a lot of damage since I like to blow dry straight almost everyday of the week. And I did not have any additional damage or breakage after the treatment. Like I said before, my hair felt healthier.

Im not sure what the keratin deal is....I have never used a keratin conditioner regularly, but the "keratin" in the BKT did not make my hair brittle at all. I still use deep conditioners weekly now that my BKT is almost out, but i honestly would did not need any deep conditioners the first few months of the treatment - it was that soft and smooth.

Wow, I sound like a spokeperson, I swear im not!! LOL. But I think its good to share this bc the only reason I got it doen in the first place was on a routine highlght appt. a woman was getting it done for the 3rd time and she was just raving about it....so I splurged and made an appt. for that saturday to get it done.

I do wish it was cheaper...but again, this is prob something I will do once a year, in the hot sumemr months when hair is frizziest!!

Great advise everyone...but Im so on the fence, i tried highlighting my hair once, and my hair BROKE!! I was so upset, it took forever to grow that out. since then I have never dyed my hair, I only use relaxer on roots for touch ups every 3 months. I guess this is a job for the professionals, because I wouldnt want to screw up my hair even MORE!!!!

NAKEDVOSHER--What would u suggest for my hair?being that ur hair is dry and brittle as well.

i'm sorry to be brutal but I'm in the exact situation ... dry and brittle (maybe I need to take my own advice lol) ... a haircut.

I would definately consult your stylist who does your relaxers on the best products to use for your hair type.
