opinions on deodorant

a few years ago my body started responding weird to my deodorant. i didn't sweat much at all through high school and college. i think that my medications have changed my Ph balance or whatever it's called. so it's embarassing to say, but when i sweat now, i stain my shirts.

i have tried everything i can possibly think of and nothing seems to work well. i've been using secret for years; i've tried plain deodorant without anti-perspirant, etc. i tried "natural" ones like the kind they sell at Whole Foods. i feel like i need to only buy shirts from old navy so that i don't ruin my BCBG or anthropologie shirts. my dermatologist recommended some stuff you apply at night; it's a prescription. is that my best/only option?

help.

a lot of times it's actually the ingredients in the deodorant that stains your shirts! or have you used different detergent over the past few years? it's more likely the chemicals staining than you.
there is a prescription deodorant that is only applied at night, or every other night or something like that. i knew someone once who had it, but i can't remember how often it was supposed to be used. maybe shower at night and apply it after the shower? you could probably google it.

yeah, I had a friend who had this problem...I don't think it was the deodorant, just her body changing itself up. Anyway, she went to the doc. and got some scrip DO, works great, no more stains and sweat!

definately do not use the natural deodarants if you have a problem with sweating! i tried a couple brands - even the "sport" kind, but they all made me stink bad. Mitchum works the best on me, though it made my underarms itch so i stopped using it. Right now i usually use Dove, but i am now trying adidis, which i think works well. If none of the store deodarants work, i would go to a doctor though.

Natural deodorants won't do anything for sweating. They are literally de-odorants. They remove odours. That's it.

You need an antiperspirant to block sweat. Go back to drugstore stuff before using prescription stuff (it can be really irritating). I use Lady Speed Stick 24/7 and it's my current favourite, and I sweat like mad.

If that does not work, go ahead and try Certain Dri or Dri-sol. Certain Dri made a big difference for me. (I was on meds for a while plus I am basically the sweatiest girl on the planet.)

i know you said you used secret-- have you tried the platinum? that worked great for me. now i have started using dove, too, and at my BF's house i have adidas. i think my body gets kind of immune to things after a while, so i keep a rotation!! but yes, anything without anti-perspirant in it won't help sweating.
but do some research on the ingredients in anti-perspirants, namely aluminum, it has been thought to aid in the development of alzheimers:

but at the same time, others say there is nothing that has been proven:

thanks for the tips. i'm going to try the lady's speed stick. i may have gotten this wrong, but i think it is the aluminum which also really contributes to the yellow stains on clothing. a nurse advised me to try deodorants without anti-perspirant to help prevent staining. BAD advice. hello stinkville.

That alzheimers crap is BS, IMO. You'd have to shoot deodorant into your blood for it to be able to do anything to remotely help along alzheimers, it being on your skin isn't going to hurt you, it can't penetrate through your skin. And if you sweet a lot, just using deodorant won't work. All deodorant does is mask the smell, unlike anti-perspirant which actually prevents you from sweating in the first place! Hope you find something that works for you!

There has been some questions as to the aluminum in deoderant and it's effects. It can soak into your skin, it does stop sweat right? Especially since there are glands under your arms. I wish I didn't have to use it because I firmly believe it's probably not the best thing for you. Anyways I use Lady Speed Stick 24/7 gel. It got recommended to me on HF.

I can't use deodorants with aluminum at all. I get huge painful cysts- so big that it hurts to move my arm.
Absolutely horrible. It's because it tightens the pores- for me that means cysts.
What's in the Lady Speed Stick?

I've been using Dove and that's the only one that doesn't irritate my skin.

Aluminum, a ton of it I'm sure and I wish I didn't have to use it but ever since I changed birth controls I've gotten kinda sweaty under my arms. That's awful about your cysts. I've read so many stories about aluminum causing cancer and it's effects on the brain. Just because it sits on your skin doesn't mean it doesn't soak in. Your skin is an organ that absorbs stuff just like the rest of your organs. I wish manufacturers could come up with something safer.

It may soak into your skin, but I don't see how it could get from your armpits to your brain without going through your blood system. And deodorant does NOT get into your blood, that would be a sight.

what a coincidence....I decide to switch up my deodorant yesterday, and bought some Jason pure, natural, organic apricot deodorant. It uses apricot oil, vitamin E, shea butter, and organic corn startch to "deliver soothing freshness". I personally don't think anti-perspirants work at all, at least for me. When I'm hot...I sweat...its only natural.

On a side note...I'm kinda on the fence with the scent...it was either apricot or green tea scent. What do you think of a guy who, when he sweats...smells like apricots?

In deodorant, aluminum comes in the form of aluminum chlorhydrate. Heavy metals can be absorbed through the skin. Think about how this works - right where you apply an aluminum-based deodorant are TWO MAJOR LYMPH GLANDS about an inch away under the skin. Some doctors ask pregnant or lactating women to stop using deoderant with aluminum and to not color their hair. Why would they do this if there was no chance of it being absorbed into the bloodstream???

aluminum chloride, which is the unhydrated form of the compound used in anti-perspirants is not very fat soluble, which means that it won't absorb through the skin very well. i think the danger would come from having tiny open sores on the skin, through which the compound could then gain entrance. the underarms seem like a likely place for many women to have small abrasions because of regular shaving.

nonetheless, nothing has yet been proven as far as alzheimer's or cancer goes.

thank you, that's all I'm trying to get at. Our world is so paranoid of everything. Cavemen survived just fine and all they had was leather, fire (eventually), tools they made with their own hands, and raw meat. We could all just be completely natural..no makeup, no showers (except for when it rained!), and no deodorant, but then we'd all be smelly and ugly. But that would eliminate problems. We couldn't blame cancer on deodorant or our cell phones anymore.

I think it's a good idea to question everything. And I'm certainly NOT blaming cancer on deoderant or cell phones. I'm pointing out that antiperspirant deoderant use is something that be considered unhealthy. And I'm sure I would still find someone attractive if they decided to use deoderant without antiperspirant. That's just me though...

Well, hon, I hate to break it to you- but cavemen didn't survive just fine, on the contrary, they died young and lost all their teeth.

true, but they weren't paranoid about everything! They survived a whole lot better than any of us stuck out there on our own with prehistoric tools would do!

Everybody sweats...it's our bodies natural method of cooling the body. Sweat containes pheremones which is humans natural attraction scent. Plus getting a good sweat going is good for your system, cause it removes toxins from the body.

But I know what you mean...outside of the gym, sports, athletics, and sex, I hate to be sweating.
